    Alʔilbīrī’s Book of the rational conclusions. Introduction, Critical Edition of the Arabic Text and Materials for the History of the Ḫawāṣṣic Genre in Early Andalus

    [eng] The Book of the rational conclusions, written perhaps somewhen in the 10th c. by a physician from Ilbīrah (Andalus), is a multi-section medical pandect. The author brings together, from a diversity of sources, materials dealing with matters related to drug-handling, natural philosophy, therapeutics, medical applications of the specific properties of things, a regimen, and a dispensatory. This dissertation includes three different parts. First the transmission of the text, its contents, and its possible context are discussed. Then a critical edition of the Arabic text is offered. Last, but certainly not least, the subject of the specific properties is approached from several points of view. The analysis of Section III of the original book leads to an exploration of the early Andalusī assimilation of this epistemic tradition and to the establishment of a well-defined textual family in which our text must be inscribed. On the other hand, the concept itself of ‘specific property’ is often misconstrued and it is usually made synonymous to magic and superstition. Upon closer inspection, however, the alleged irrationality of the knowledge of these properties appears to be largely the result of anachronistic interpretation. El llibre obre amb una secció sobre apoteconomia (una mena de manual d’apotecaris) però se centra després en les diferents branques de la medicina. A continuació d’uns prolegòmens filosòfics l’autor copia, amb mínima adaptació lingüística, un tractat sencer de terapèutica, després un altre sobre les aplicacions mèdiques de les propietats específiques de les coses, una sèrie de fragments relacionats amb la dietètica (un règim en termes tradicionals) i, finalment, una col·lecció de receptes mèdiques. Cadascuna d’aquestes seccions mostren evidents lligams d’intertextualitat que apunten cap a una intensa activitat sintetitzadora de diverses tradicions aliades a la medicina a l’Àndalus califal.     The Council of Europe’s Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture: Hope for democracy or an allusive Utopia?

    Democracies around the world are increasingly polarized along political and cultural lines. To address these challenges, in 2016, the Council of Europe (CoE) produced a model of twenty competences for democratic culture. In 2018, this same model became the basis of the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC). The RFCDC provides pedagogical instructions to help implement these competences. Together, I call this set of materials “the Framework”. This thesis begins with the premise that utopia has long played an important role in the way power is maintained or resisted in democratic education. It questions the assumption that democratic culture can be cultivated instrumentally through policy- based competences without imposing power on subjects and views this assumption to be utopian. It thus excavates the potential utopian ideals at play in the Framework using ‘hidden utopias’ as a conceptual lens and method, which draws inspiration from the theories of Michèl Foucault, Ernst Bloch and Ruth Levitas. It investigates how using ‘hidden utopias’ as a theoretical lens might facilitate a deeper understanding of the nature and purpose of the Framework, how implicit utopias might be at play, how this could be problematic and how these theories might shed light on the application of the Framework in pedagogical contexts. The contribution of this thesis is to make visible potential utopias at the heart of the Framework. It suggests that making implicit utopias visible in democratic education can help educators and learners engage with these discourses in critical and innovative ways and think beyond them

    A Critical Review Of Post-Secondary Education Writing During A 21st Century Education Revolution

    Educational materials are effective instruments which provide information and report new discoveries uncovered by researchers in specific areas of academia. Higher education, like other education institutions, rely on instructional materials to inform its practice of educating adult learners. In post-secondary education, developmental English programs are tasked with meeting the needs of dynamic populations, thus there is a continuous need for research in this area to support its changing landscape. However, the majority of scholarly thought in this area centers on K-12 reading and writing. This paucity presents a phenomenon to the post-secondary community. This research study uses a qualitative content analysis to examine peer-reviewed journals from 2003-2017, developmental online websites, and a government issued document directed toward reforming post-secondary developmental education programs. These highly relevant sources aid educators in discovering informational support to apply best practices for student success. Developmental education serves the purpose of addressing literacy gaps for students transitioning to college-level work. The findings here illuminate the dearth of material offered to developmental educators. This study suggests the field of literacy research is fragmented and highlights an apparent blind spot in scholarly literature with regard to English writing instruction. This poses a quandary for post-secondary literacy researchers in the 21st century and establishes the necessity for the literacy research community to commit future scholarship toward equipping college educators teaching writing instruction to underprepared adult learners

    This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identification of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classification. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015.     Epidemiological methods to evaluate the early impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic represented a major challenge for health systems and local Governments, with no drugs or vaccines available to provide a pharmaceutical response. In the absence of formal reporting, data gaps and repression by authorities, real-time open-source data can be mined for risk assessment and response early on. In this thesis, open-source and survey generated data was synthesized in novel ways to develop new epidemiological insights into the COVID-19 pandemic and advise public health policy. There were also controversies in areas where no data on risks associated with cruise ship travel, healthcare workers, aged-care, and mass gatherings was available. This thesis analyzed a range of these issues in the first year of the pandemic. In chapter 1, I summarized the literature on the COVID-19 pandemic and identified gaps in using open-source data for early responses to pandemics. In chapter 2, I assessed the impact of cruise ship travel on the transmission of COVID-19 both globally and in Australia. In chapter 3, in the absence of any reported data on healthcare workers, I estimated the burden of COVID-19 on Australian healthcare workers and the health system, by analyzing national healthcare worker infections and their occupational risk of COVID-19. Similarly, with no formal reporting on Australian COVID-19 aged-care infections and outbreaks, I estimated the burden of COVID-19 on Australian aged-care and aged-care workers in 2020, in chapter 4. With the controversy surrounding the May-June 2020, Black Lives Matter protests and COVID-19 associated risks, I estimated mask use and COVID-19 associated risks of these protests. In chapter 6, with the controversial mask mandates in Australia, I evaluated mask attitude and government and state sentiment during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sydney and Melbourne. This thesis highlights the value of open-source, and survey data, which provides good insights into population attitudes around public health issues and practice and can enhance routine surveillance, early warning, and response. With many countries now minimizing COVID-19, the use of this data is even more important as prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic requires both long-term public health and epidemiology measures

    Development of standardised sizing system and size charts for the production of ready-to-wear clothing for Ghanaian children aged 6-11

    Children experience rapid growth rate and often indulge in various physical and motion related activities in education and play spaces. Ill-fitting clothing such as very tight or unproportionally balanced clothes can cause movement restrictions, psychological challenges, and other undesirable health related issues. This makes appropriate clothing sizing crucial to address, as it gives children the right fit that allows room for movement and growth. Effectiveness of fit is based on a sizing system and size charts that have been developed using current and accurate body measurements of a specific population since differences exist among populations. Currently, established size charts and academic publications on sizing systems in Ghana have focused on women. No national database or anthropometric study has been developed exclusively for Ghanaian children. Practitioners either take measurements on ad-hoc basis for made-to-measure outfits; or use adapted versions of the British sizing system for manufacturing ready-to-wear garments such as uniforms. This research has therefore been undertaken to develop a standard clothing sizing system and size charts for Ghanaian children between the (school) ages of 6 and 11. This will sustain the general production of reliably sized garments for Ghanaian children whiles providing appropriate fit. It will further enhance mass production of ready-to-wear garments for the apparel market in Ghana. The study involved both secondary and primary data collection methods. An extensive review of literature was conducted focusing on relevant topics in anthropometry and anthropometric surveys for sizing creation, sizing systems, growth of children and garment fit. A comprehensive set of body measurements including height and weight of the sample population of school children were collected. A critical measurement procedural guide and two instructional videos in English and Twi (dominant Ghanaian language) were developed by the study taking into account efficacy, ethical and sustainable considerations for good practice. These were made available and guided parents/legal guardians and participants in the data collection process during fieldwork. The population consisted of primary school pupils in Ghana. A sample of 776 usable data was used for the analysis. With the IBM SPSS analytics software, appropriate statistical procedures such as means, t-test and analysis of variance tests (ANOVA) were conducted to ascertain the relationships among the variables and to obtain statistical data for the development of the sizing system. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis were also used to aid the development of the sizing system. Centred on the PCA technique, three key dimensions (height, chest, and waist girths) were selected based on the factor loading and practicality. The study found and established significant differences between the body measurements of Ghanaian children aged 6-11 along gender lines. Using the cluster analysis technique, the selected dimensions were used to categorize the study sample into homogenous subgroups according to upper and lower body separately for both males and females. Four or five sizes were created for each cluster group, and size charts were established based on percentile values. This study presents theoretical and empirical contributions to the body of knowledge in anthropometrics. It has modelled a guide that demonstrates the capability of remote and safe body measuring practices on children, which is particularly useful, economical, and reliable for clothing related practices that seek to employ consistent traditional manual measuring techniques. The study has created an original up-to-date anthropometric database for Ghanaian children between 6-11 years; and developed a comprehensive sizing system for wider clothing practices. In addition to providing a framework for procedures in creating children’s sizing system and size chart, it establishes new size charts for both males and females aged 6-11, based on the Ghanaian population. These developments stand to increase productivity, consistency, and economic efficiency for the Ghanaian apparel industry. The study makes recommendations for extending this work to other segments of the population

    The Public Performance Of Sanctions In Insolvency Cases: The Dark, Humiliating, And Ridiculous Side Of The Law Of Debt In The Italian Experience. A Historical Overview Of Shaming Practices

    This study provides a diachronic comparative overview of how the law of debt has been applied by certain institutions in Italy. Specifically, it offers historical and comparative insights into the public performance of sanctions for insolvency through shaming and customary practices in Roman Imperial Law, in the Middle Ages, and in later periods. The first part of the essay focuses on the Roman bonorum cessio culo nudo super lapidem and on the medieval customary institution called pietra della vergogna (stone of shame), which originates from the Roman model. The second part of the essay analyzes the social function of the zecca and the pittima Veneziana during the Republic of Venice, and of the practice of lu soldate a castighe (no translation is possible). The author uses a functionalist approach to apply some arguments and concepts from the current context to this historical analysis of ancient institutions that we would now consider ridiculous. The article shows that the customary norms that play a crucial regulatory role in online interactions today can also be applied to the public square in the past. One of these tools is shaming. As is the case in contemporary online settings, in the public square in historic periods, shaming practices were used to enforce the rules of civility in a given community. Such practices can be seen as virtuous when they are intended for use as a tool to pursue positive change in forces entrenched in the culture, and thus to address social wrongs considered outside the reach of the law, or to address human rights abuses
