Blind Minimax Estimation
We consider the linear regression problem of estimating an unknown,
deterministic parameter vector based on measurements corrupted by colored
Gaussian noise. We present and analyze blind minimax estimators (BMEs), which
consist of a bounded parameter set minimax estimator, whose parameter set is
itself estimated from measurements. Thus, one does not require any prior
assumption or knowledge, and the proposed estimator can be applied to any
linear regression problem. We demonstrate analytically that the BMEs strictly
dominate the least-squares estimator, i.e., they achieve lower mean-squared
error for any value of the parameter vector. Both Stein's estimator and its
positive-part correction can be derived within the blind minimax framework.
Furthermore, our approach can be readily extended to a wider class of
estimation problems than Stein's estimator, which is defined only for white
noise and non-transformed measurements. We show through simulations that the
BMEs generally outperform previous extensions of Stein's technique.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
A Linear Multi-User Detector for STBC MC-CDMA Systems based on the Adaptive Implementation of the Minimum-Conditional Bit-Error-Rate Criterion and on Genetic Algorithm-assisted MMSE Channel Estimation
The implementation of efficient baseband receivers characterized by affordable computational load is a crucial point in the development of transmission systems exploiting diversity in different domains. In this paper, we are proposing a linear multi-user detector for MIMO MC-CDMA systems with Alamouti’s Space-Time Block Coding, inspired by the concept of Minimum Conditional Bit-Error-Rate (MCBER) and relying on Genetic-Algorithm (GA)-assisted MMSE channel estimation. The MCBER combiner has been implemented in adaptive way by using Least-Mean-Square (LMS) optimization. Firstly, we shall analyze the proposed adaptive MCBER MUD receiver with ideal knowledge of Channel Status Information (CSI). Afterwards, we shall consider the complete receiver structure, encompassing also the non-ideal GA-assisted channel estimation. Simulation results evidenced that the proposed MCBER receiver always outperforms state-of-the-art receiver schemes based on EGC and MMSE criterion exploiting the same degree of channel knowledge (i.e. ideal or estimated CSI)
Automatic speech recognition: from study to practice
Today, automatic speech recognition (ASR) is widely used for different purposes such as robotics, multimedia, medical and industrial application. Although many researches have been performed in this field in the past decades, there is still a lot of room to work. In order to start working in this area, complete knowledge of ASR systems as well as their weak points and problems is inevitable. Besides that, practical experience improves the theoretical knowledge understanding in a reliable way. Regarding to these facts, in this master thesis, we have first reviewed the principal structure of the standard HMM-based ASR systems from technical point of view. This includes, feature extraction, acoustic modeling, language modeling and decoding. Then, the most significant challenging points in ASR systems is discussed. These challenging points address different internal components characteristics or external agents which affect the ASR systems performance. Furthermore, we have implemented a Spanish language recognizer using HTK toolkit. Finally, two open research lines according to the studies of different sources in the field of ASR has been suggested for future work

Inconspicuousness and obfuscation: how large shareholders dynamically manipulate output and information for trading purposes
I model a large shareholder who can affect firm fundamentals. I demonstrate that the large shareholder amplifies the component of his private information that is unforecastable by uninformed traders and thus alters the fundamental value of the firm to facilitate his trading profits: he obfuscates. I then construct a continuous time dynamic version of the model using Fourier transform methods. In the dynamic model, the large shareholder does not just simply amplify the unforecastable part of the fundamental: he also alters its stochastic structure. The model thus marries market microstructure with real resource allocation. There are two consequences: (i) the large shareholder induces the fundamental value of the firm to more closely mimic the noise traders, and (ii) market liquidity is reduced
Adaptive space-time processing for wireless communications
Adaptive space-time processing techniques have been found to increase the capacity of two major, multiple-access wireless communication systems: Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).
In an IS-54 TDMA system, the frequency re-use factor has to be set to 7 so that cells with the same spectrum are separated far enough to meet a required carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR). Space processing uses multiple antennas which, in turn, provide alternative signal paths in order to cancel interferences and combat multipath fading. We have proposed the eigencanceler method and have reviewed the theoretical optimum combining and the feasible direct matrix inverse (DMI) technique. An analysis of the system performance reveals that when data sets are small, the eigencanceler is superior to DMI. Furthermore, we have proposed a. simple projection-based algorithm and have analyzed its performance.
The capacity of CDMA communication systems is restricted by multiple-access interferences (MAI). We have shown that spatial and temporal processing can be combined to increase the capacity of CDMA-based wireless communications systems. The degrees of freedom provided by space-time processing can be exploited to combat both fading and MAI. Specifically, we have discussed the following methods: (1) space-time diversity, (2) cascade optimum spatial-diversity temporal, (3) cascade optimum spatial-optimum temporal, and (4) joint-domain optimum processing. We have proved that, due to its interference cancellation capability, optimum combining provides significantly better performance than diversity techniques
Linear Estimation in Interconnected Sensor Systems with Information Constraints
A ubiquitous challenge in many technical applications is to estimate an unknown state by means of data that stems from several, often heterogeneous sensor sources. In this book, information is interpreted stochastically, and techniques for the distributed processing of data are derived that minimize the error of estimates about the unknown state. Methods for the reconstruction of dependencies are proposed and novel approaches for the distributed processing of noisy data are developed
