Dark energy as an elastic strain fluid

    Get PDF
The origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe is still unclear and new physics is needed on cosmological scales. We propose and test a novel interpretation of dark energy as originated by an elastic strain due to a cosmic defect in an otherwise Euclidean space-time. The strain modifies the expansion history of the universe. This new effective contribution tracks radiation at early times and mimics a cosmological constant at late times. The theory is tested against observations, from nucleosynthesis to the cosmic microwave background and formation and evolution of large scale structure to supernovae. Data are very well reproduced with Lamé parameters of the order of 10^(−52) m^(−2

Wattle and daub experimental workshop: durability testing after 14 years of uninterrupted use

An important factor to analyze when studying the useful lifetime of earth constructions is the detection of any constructive pathologies that may occur; an important consideration when building a house; yet in Argentina information on building with wattle and daub is scarce. This paper describes a durability test conducted on an experimental workshop built with wattle and daub technology in 2004, in the city of Mendoza, Argentina. The building has a floor area of 33.63 m2 (5.70 m x 5.90 m), and houses an experimental workshop for thermal energy research and the construction of solar equipment. During the 14 years that the workshop has been in use, the wattle and daub walls have been exposed to various environmental forces, such as rain, wind, and earthquakes. However, its thermal behavior has remained constant over time, maintaining a difference in temperature of 5.8ºC between the inside and outside without auxiliary heating. In general, the construction has been well-preserved and serves the purpose for which it was built, thus proving that wattle and daub constructions will remain in optimum condition for at least 14 years with minimal maintenance required to prevent surface materials from deteriorating.Fil: Cuitiño Rosales, Maria Guadalupe. A Fully Coupled Formulation For Incompressible Fluid-Elastic Structure-Interactions

    Get PDF
We present a general formulation for analysis of fluid flows with structural interactions using the particle finite element method (PFEM). The fluids are fully coupled to the structures that can undergo highly non-linear response due to large deformations. The key feature of the PFEM is the use of an updated Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes(particles) in both the fluid and the structure domains. A mesh connects the nodes defining the discretized domains where the governing equations, expressed in an integral form are solved as in the standard FEM. A fractional step scheme for the transient coupled fluid-structure solution is described. Examples of application of the PFEM method to solve a number of fluidstructure interaction problems including free-fluid-surfaces, breaking waves and fluid particle separation may be easily solved with this formulation are presented.Fil: Marti, Julio Marcelo. Abstract. The subject of this paper is to investigate the contribution of GPS coordinate time series to the development of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). The analysis of the GPS data sets should not only detect possible trends but should also discover offsets or discontinuities caused by natural processes like sudden crustal movements and earthquakes, as well as those caused by artificial events and man-made activities. This kind of analysis is important because it contributes to the understanding of Reference Frame stability and enables deeper insight into local, regional, and global geodynamical processes. The paper describes the strategy and some results obtained by the analysis of data from Reference GNSS stations located in the Republic of Serbia
