Being one of the major players in economic growth, the number of women-owned SMEs in Malaysia is increasing and researches are directed on their business performance. Notwithstanding the vital importance of this area, very few studies have been done to look at the relationships between entrepreneurial management, entrepreneurial orientation and ethics, and the performance of women-owned businesses particularly in Malaysia. Therefore, this study focused primarily on testing the possibility of ethics as the mediating variable in the relationships between entrepreneurial management and entrepreneurial orientation, and women-owned SMEs business performance. Based on the literature, six dimensions of entrepreneurial management: entrepreneurial culture, growth orientation, management structure, resource orientation, reward philosophy, and strategic orientation; and three dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation: innovativeness, pro- activeness and risk taking, were selected, and 18 direct and indirect hypotheses were developed. Measurement tools were based on scales previously established in the literature for measuring entrepreneurial management, entrepreneurial orientation, ethics, and also business performance. A total of 207 usable data were gathered through a mail questionnaire survey, and multiple regressions analysis was employed to analyse the data. The empirical findings revealed significant relationships between women-owned SMEs business performance and resource orientation, reward philosophy, strategic orientation, innovativeness, pro-activeness as well as risk taking. Ethics was found to mediate the relationships between reward philosophy, strategic orientation, pro-activeness, risk taking and women-owned SMEs business performance. The research framework of this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge of women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship literature. The theoretical contributions and practical implications are also significant findings for women owners-managers of SMEs and women entrepreneurial development in the country. Finally, some limitations are also acknowledged that indicate future research directions

The Greeks argued that philosophy was the most important science even though it was a science that studied no things. Their science, philosophy, focused on the meaning of life and death, life after death, existence, knowledge, knowing the good and bad, as well as the application of right and wrong. We argue that what is right and what is wrong should underlie the development of the current book Sports and Exercise Science. The stated purposes of the book, “to present the up to date knowledge about etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, management and prevention of chronic injuries or sports related long term changes in locomotor system. Moreover, topics about influence of sports activities on growth and development in pediatric population and presentation of acute injuries that often develop to chronic…as well,” are topics that should be addressed through science in sports and exercise science—philosophy and ethics. Ethics should govern all science, including the growth and development of sports and exercise science. Injury often occurs because of poor coaching, poor training, or overtraining. The problem exists because of unethical practice of either coaches, parents, leaders, trainers, or a combination of all of them. This chapter focuses on ethical education for professionals, educators, practitioners, and coaches

Scholars reached a conclusion in which fraud and fraudulent activities are found to have inflicted severe financial difficulties on Banks and their customers. However, findings indicate that the national value system greatly moderates the extent to which ethics, illustrating from the accountants perspective minimises fraud. Consequently, a fraud control model was developed highlighting the national value system factor in fraud management. The purpose of this research was to examine the role of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) in mediating the relationship between knowledge-ethics and the sustainability of social enterprises in Thailand. Structural Equation Modeling was employed to analyze the proposed relationships between knowledge and ethics in organizational management and the operational and impact viability of social enterprises, and to investigate the mediating effect of SEP’s pillars of moderation, reasonableness, and self-immunity. The data for the study was collected via a survey of 291 CEOs of social enterprises in Thailand. The model demonstrated acceptable fit indices (Chi-square=1694.932, df =1007, CMIN/DF = 1.683, CFI =0.906, SRMR = 0.079, RMSEA = 0.049, and PClose = 0.723), indicating empirical support for the proposed conceptual model. The results revealed that the three pillars of SEP significantly mediate the relationship between ethics and the sustainability of social enterprises for both operational viability and impact viability. Compared to reasonableness and self-immunity, moderation had the highest indirect effect on both operational and impact viability, suggesting that a moderated approach to social enterprise can enhance sustainable performance. Finally, only reasonableness and self-immunity, significantly mediated the relationship between knowledge and the operational viability of social enterprises

FURTHERING KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH THROUGH ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: A RESEARCH AGENDA

    Get PDF
Noting the general paucity of ethical considerations in Knowledge Management (KM) research, this research commentary articulates the relevance of ethics to KM. Drawing from the classical ethical theories in philosophy, it revisits certain research focuses raised in Alavi and Leidner’s (2001) well-known paper on KM and generates corresponding ethically-informed research questions. The main aim of this paper is to further KM research through such ethically-informed research questions that can be investigated by future studies. Other contributions and implications are also discussed

‘Good to know’: An Exploration of the role and Influence of Professional Ethics in ICT Bodies of Knowledge (BoKs)

As our dependency on ever-more complex, opaque, and ubiquitous information and communication technologies (ICTs) increases, ethical concerns about the development of those technologies are also rising. One approach to mitigate these concerns is to improve the maturity of the ICT profession through codification of its knowledge base and professional ethics. In this paper, some key theoretical approaches to ethics with a long-established tradition within Philosophy are explored and how these approaches may manifest in the codification of knowledge within ICT Bodies of Knowledge (BoKs) is discussed. BoKs provide a common vocabulary and knowledge inventory to aid communication and encourage shared values and practices, particularly in emerging professional areas such as the ICT profession. Thus, identifying and understanding how ethics are codified in ICT BoKs is important for maturing ICT professional practice in general, and more specifically, for the resolution of ethical concerns. This paper 1) explores considerations and approaches to how ethics are incorporated within ICT BoKs, and 2) conducts content analysis on how ethics are codified within the content structure of ICT Boks. It is found that theoretical ethical approaches are rarely explicated cited in BoKS though, in the more mature BoKs, the discussion of ethics does include consideration of most of the major philosophical approaches. The implications of how knowledge about ethics is described and integrated into the wider knowledge infrastructure of the ICT profession including curriculum guidelines and accreditation processes is discussed. In a wider contribution to the Knowledge Management discipline, potential lessons to increase maturity for other emerging professions through the development of BoKs are also outlined
