    Impairments in ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radar

    Radars on multiple distributed airborne or ground based moving platforms are of increasing interest, since they can be deployed in close proximity to the event under investigation and thus offer remarkable sensing opportunities. Ground moving target indicator (GMTI) detects and localizes moving targets in the presence of ground clutter and other interference sources. Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) implemented with antenna arrays has been a classical approach to clutter cancellation in airborne radar. One of the challenges with STAP is that the minimum detectable velocity (MDV) of targets is a function of the baseline of the antenna array: the larger the baseline (i.e., the narrower the beam), the lower the MDV. Unfortunately, increasing the baseline of a uniform linear array (ULA) entails a commensurate increase in the number of elements. An alternative approach to increasing the resolution of a radar, is to use a large, but sparse, random array. The proliferation of relatively inexpensive autonomous sensing vehicles, such as unmanned airborne systems, raises the question whether is it possible to carry out GMTI by distributed airborne platforms. A major obstacle to implementing distributed GMTI is the synchronization of autonomous moving sensors. For range processing, GMTI processing relies on synchronized sampling of the signals received at the array, while STAP processing requires time, frequency and phase synchronization for beamforming and interference cancellation. Distributed sensors have independent oscillators, which are naturally not synchronized and are each subject to different stochastic phase drift. Each sensor has its own local oscillator, unlike a traditional array in which all sensors are connected to the same local oscillator. Even when tuned to the same frequency, phase errors between the sensors will develop over time, due to phase instabilities. These phase errors affect a distributed STAP system. In this dissertation, a distributed STAP application in which sensors are moving autonomously is envisioned. The problems of tracking, detection for our proposed architecture are of important. The first part focuses on developing a direct tracking approach to multiple targets by distributed radar sensors. A challenging scenario of a distributed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar system (as shown above), in which relatively simple moving sensors send observations to a fusion center where most of the baseband processing is performed, is presented. The sensors are assumed to maintain time synchronization, but are not phase synchronized. The conventional approach to localization by distributed sensors is to estimate intermediate parameters from the received signals, for example time delay or the angle of arrival. Subsequently, these parameters are used to deduce the location and velocity of the target(s). These classical localization techniques are referred to as indirect localization. Recently, new techniques have been developed capable of estimating target location directly from signal measurements, without an intermediate estimation step. The objective is to develop a direct tracking algorithm for multiple moving targets. It is aimed to develop a direct tracking algorithm of targets state parameters using widely distributed moving sensors for multiple moving targets. Potential candidate for the tracker include Extended Kalman Filter. In the second part of the dissertation,the effect of phase noise on space-time adaptive processing in general, and spatial processing in particular is studied. A power law model is assumed for the phase noise. It is shown that a composite model with several terms is required to properly model the phase noise. It is further shown that the phase noise has almost linear trajectories. The effect of phase noise on spatial processing is analyzed. Simulation results illustrate the effect of phase noise on degrading the performance in terms of beam pattern and receiver operating characteristics. A STAP application, in which spatial processing is performed (together with Doppler processing) over a coherent processing interval, is envisioned

    Knowledge-Aided STAP Using Low Rank and Geometry Properties

    This paper presents knowledge-aided space-time adaptive processing (KA-STAP) algorithms that exploit the low-rank dominant clutter and the array geometry properties (LRGP) for airborne radar applications. The core idea is to exploit the fact that the clutter subspace is only determined by the space-time steering vectors, {red}{where the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization approach is employed to compute the clutter subspace. Specifically, for a side-looking uniformly spaced linear array, the} algorithm firstly selects a group of linearly independent space-time steering vectors using LRGP that can represent the clutter subspace. By performing the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, the orthogonal bases of the clutter subspace are obtained, followed by two approaches to compute the STAP filter weights. To overcome the performance degradation caused by the non-ideal effects, a KA-STAP algorithm that combines the covariance matrix taper (CMT) is proposed. For practical applications, a reduced-dimension version of the proposed KA-STAP algorithm is also developed. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, and show that the proposed algorithms converge rapidly and provide a SINR improvement over existing methods when using a very small number of snapshots.Comment: 16 figures, 12 pages.     Adaptive Illumination Patterns for Radar Applications

    The fundamental goal of Fully Adaptive Radar (FAR) involves full exploitation of the joint, synergistic adaptivity of the radar\u27s transmitter and receiver. Little work has been done to exploit the joint space time Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF) available via an Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) during the radar\u27s transmit illumination cycle. This research introduces Adaptive Illumination Patterns (AIP) as a means for exploiting this previously untapped transmit DOF. This research investigates ways to mitigate clutter interference effects by adapting the illumination pattern on transmit. Two types of illumination pattern adaptivity were explored, termed Space Time Illumination Patterns (STIP) and Scene Adaptive Illumination Patterns (SAIP). Using clairvoyant knowledge, STIP demonstrates the ability to remove sidelobe clutter at user specified Doppler frequencies, resulting in optimum receiver performance using a non-adaptive receive processor. Using available database knowledge, SAIP demonstrated the ability to reduce training data heterogeneity in dense target environments, thereby greatly improving the minimum discernable velocity achieved through STAP processing

    A portable 3D Imaging FMCW MIMO Radar Demonstrator with a 24x24 Antenna Array for Medium Range Applications

In this paper, the design, implementation, and results of a complete 3-D imaging frequency-modulated continuous-wave MIMO radar demonstrator are presented. The radar sensor working frequency range spans between 16 and 17 GHz, and the proposed solution is based on a 24-transmitter and 24-receiver MIMO radar architecture, implemented by timedivision multiplexing of the transmit signals. A modular approach based on conventional low-cost printed circuit boards is used for the transmit and receive systems. Using digital beamforming algorithms and radar processing techniques on the received signals, a high-resolution 3-D sensing of the range, azimuth, and elevation can be calculated. With the current antenna configuration, an angular resolution of 2.9° can be reached. Furthermore, by taking advantage of the 1-GHz bandwidth of the system, a range resolution of 0.5 m is achieved. The radio-frequency front-end, digital system and radar signal processing units are here presented.     Advanced Signal Processing For Multi-Mission Airborne Radar

    With the technological advancement of the 21st century, functions of different radars are being merged. A multi-functional system brings the technology of remote sensing to a wide array of applications while at the same time reduces costs of implementation and operation. Ground-based multi-mission radars have been studied in the past. The airborne counterpart deserves a through study with additional and stringent requirements of cost, size, weight, and power.In this dissertation, multi-mission functions in an airborne radar is performed using modular, software-based architecture. The software-based solution is chosen instead of proposing new hardware, primarily because evaluation, validation, and certification of new hardware is onerous and time consuming. The system implementations are validated using simulations as well as field measurements. The simulations are carried out using Mathworks® Phased Array System Toolbox. The field measurements are performed using an enhanced commercial airborne radar system called Polarimetric Airborne Radar Operating at X-band Version 1 (PARADOX1), which is an X-band, vertically polarized, solid state, pulsed radar.The shortcomings of PARADOX1 originate from small aperture size and low power. Various signal processing algorithms are developed and applied to PARADOX1 data to enhance the data quality. Super-resolution algorithms in range, angle, and Doppler domains, for example, have proven to effectively enhance the spatial resolution. An end-to-end study of single-polarized weather measurements is performed using PARADOX1 measurements. The results are compared with well established ground-based radars. The similarities, differences as well as limitations (of such comparisons) are discussed. Sense and Avoid (SAA) tracking is considered as a core functionality and presented in the context of safe integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in national airspace. A "nearly" constant acceleration motion model is used in conjunction with Kalman Filter and Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) to perform tracking operations. The basic SAA tracking function is validated through simulations as well as field measurements.The field-validations show that a modular, software-based enhancement to an existing radar system is a viable solution in realizing multi-mission functionalities in an airborne radar. The SAA tracking is validated in ground-based tests using an x86 based PC with a generic Linux operating system. The weather measurements from PARADOX1 and the subsequent data quality enhancements show that PARADOX1 data products are comparable to those of existing ground based radars

    Architectures and Algorithms for the Signal Processing of Advanced MIMO Radar Systems

    This thesis focuses on the research, development and implementation of novel concepts, architectures, demonstrator systems and algorithms for the signal processing of advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radar systems. The key concept is to address compact system, which have high resolutions and are able to perform a fast radar signal processing, three-dimensional (3D), and four-dimensional (4D) beamforming for radar image generation and target estimation. The idea is to obtain a complete sensing of range, Azimuth and elevation (additionally Doppler as the fourth dimension) from the targets in the radar captures. The radar technology investigated, aims at addressing sev- eral civil and military applications, such as surveillance and detection of targets, both air and ground based, and situational awareness, both in cars and in flying platforms, from helicopters, to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and air-taxis. Several major topics have been targeted. The development of complete systems and innovative FPGA, ARM and software based digital architectures for 3D imaging MIMO radars, which operate in both Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Frequency Divi- sion Multiplexing (FDM) modes, with Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals, respectively. The de- velopment of real-time radar signal processing, beamforming and Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) algorithms for target detection, with particular focus on FFT based, hardware implementable techniques. The study and implementation of advanced system concepts, parametrisation and simulation of next generation real-time digital radars (e.g. OFDM based). The design and development of novel constant envelope orthogonal waveforms for real-time 3D OFDM MIMO radar systems. The MIMO architectures presented in this thesis are a collection of system concepts, de- sign and simulations, as well as complete radar demonstrators systems, with indoor and outdoor measurements. Several of the results shown, come in the form of radar images which have been captured in field-test, in different scenarios, which aid in showing the proper functionality of the systems. The research activities for this thesis, have been carried out on the premises of Air- bus, based in Munich (Germany), as part of a Ph.D. candidate joint program between Airbus and the Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture (Dipartimento Politecnico di Ingegneria e Architettura), of the University of Udine, based in Udine (Italy).Questa tesi si concentra sulla ricerca, lo sviluppo e l\u2019implementazione di nuovi concetti, architetture, sistemi dimostrativi e algoritmi per l\u2019elaborazione dei segnali in sistemi radar avanzati, basati su tecnologia Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO).     Development and performance evaluation of a multistatic radar system

    Multistatic radar systems are of emerging interest as they can exploit spatial diversity, enabling improved performance and new applications. Their development is being fuelled by advances in enabling technologies in such fields as communications and Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Such systems differ from typical modern active radar systems through consisting of multiple spatially diverse transmitter and receiver sites. Due to this spatial diversity, these systems present challenges in managing their operation as well as in usefully combining the multiple sources of information to give an output to the radar operator. In this work, a novel digital Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) based coherent multistatic radar system designed at University College London, named ‘NetRad’, has been developed to produce some of the first published experimental results, investigating the challenges of operating such a system, and determining what level of performance might be achievable. Full detail of the various stages involved in the combination of data from the component transmitter-receiver pairs within a multistatic system is investigated, and many of the practical issues inherent are discussed. Simulation and subsequent experimental verification of several centralised and decentralised detection algorithms in terms of localisation (resolution and parameter estimation) of targets was undertaken. The computational cost of the DSP involved in multistatic data fusion is also considered. This gave a clear demonstration of several of the benefits of multistatic radar. Resolution of multiple targets that would have been unresolvable in a conventional monostatic system was shown. Targets were also shown to be plotted as two-dimensional vector position and velocities from use of time delay and Doppler shift information only. A range of targets were used including some such as walking people which were particularly challenging due to the variability of Radar Cross Section (RCS). Performance improvements were found to be dependant on the type of multistatic radar, method of data fusion and target characteristics in question. It is likely that future work will look to further explore the optimisation of multistatic radar for the various measures of performance identified and discussed in this work

    The Bi-directional Spatial Spectrum for MIMO Radar and Its Applications

    <p>Radar systems have long applied electronically-steered phased arrays to discriminate returns in azimuth angle and elevation angle. On receiver arrays, beamforming is performed after reception of the data, allowing for many adaptive array processing algorithms to be employed. However, on transmitter arrays, up until recently pre-determined phase shifts had to applied to each transmitter element before transmission, precluding adaptive transmit array processing schemes. Recent advances in multiple-input multiple-output radar techniques have allowed for transmitter channels to separated after data reception, allowing for virtual non-causal "after-the-fact" transmit beamforming. The ability to discriminate in both direction-of-arrival and direction-of-departure allows for the novel ability to discriminate line-of-sight returns from multipath returns. This works extends the concept of virtual non-causal transmit beamforming to the broader concept of a bi-directional spatial spectrum, and describes application of such a spectrum to applications such as spread-Doppler multipath clutter mitigation in ground-vehicle radar, and calibration of a receiver array of a MIMO system with ground clutter only. Additionally, for this work, a low-power MIMO radar testbed was developed for lab testing of MIMO radar concepts.</p>Dissertatio

    FMCW Radar signal processing for Antarctic Ice Shelf profiling and imaging

    This thesis contains details of all the signal processing work being done on FMCW Radar (operating at VHF-UHF band) for the Antarctic Ice Shelf monitoring project that has been carried out at UCL. The system developed at UCL was based on a novel concept of phase-sensitive FMCW radar with low power consumption, thus allowing data collection for long period of time with millimetre range precision. Development of new signal processing method was required in order to process the large amount of data, along with the signal processing technique for obtaining the high precision range values. This was achieved during the first stage of the thesis, providing accurate ice shelf basal layer melt rate values. Properties of the FMCW radar system and experimental scenarios posed further signal processing challenges. Those challenges were met by developing number of novel algorithms. A novel shape matching algorithm was developed to detect internal layers underneath the ice shelf. Range migration correction method was developed to compensate for the defocusing of the image in large angles due to high fractional bandwidth of the radar system. Vertical error correction method was developed to compensate for any vertical displacement of the radar antenna during field experiment. Finally, a novel 3-D MIMO imaging algorithm for the Antarctic ice shelf base study was developed. This was done to process the 8x8 MIMO radar (developed at UCL) data. The radars have been deployed in the Antarctica during the Austral summer of each year from 2011-2014. The field experiments were done in the Ronne, Larsen-C, Larsen North, George VI and Ross ice shelves. The novel signal processing techniques have been successfully applied on the real data, allowing better understanding of the Antarctic ice shelf features
