Sweet Streams are Made of This: The System Engineer's View on Energy Efficiency in Video Communications
In recent years, the global use of online video services has increased
rapidly. Today, a manifold of applications, such as video streaming, video
conferencing, live broadcasting, and social networks, make use of this
technology. A recent study found that the development and the success of these
services had as a consequence that, nowadays, more than 1% of the global
greenhouse-gas emissions are related to online video, with growth rates close
to 10% per year. This article reviews the latest findings concerning energy
consumption of online video from the system engineer's perspective, where the
system engineer is the designer and operator of a typical online video service.
We discuss all relevant energy sinks, highlight dependencies with
quality-of-service variables as well as video properties, review energy
consumption models for different devices from the literature, and aggregate
these existing models into a global model for the overall energy consumption of
a generic online video service. Analyzing this model and its implications, we
find that end-user devices and video encoding have the largest potential for
energy savings. Finally, we provide an overview of recent advances in energy
efficiency improvement for video streaming and propose future research
directions for energy-efficient video streaming services.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazin
Implementation and Evaluation of Mobile-Edge Computing Cooperative Caching
Recent expanding rise of mobile device users for cloud services leads to resource challenges in Mobile Network Operator's (MNO) network. This poses significant additional costs to MNOs and also results in poor user experience. Studies illustrate that large amount of traffic consumption in MNO's network is originated from the similar requests of users for the same popular contents over Internet. Therefore such networks suffer from delivering the same content multiple times through their connected gateways to the Internet backhaul. On the other hand, in content delivery networks (CDN), the delay caused by network latency is one of the biggest issues which impedes the efficient delivery and desirable user experience.
Cooperative caching is one of the ways to handle the extra posed traffic by requesting popular contents repeatedly in MNO's network. Furthermore Mobile-Edge Computing (MEC) offers a resource rich environment and data locality to cloud applications. This helps to reduce the network latency time in CDN services. Thus in this Thesis an aggregation between Cooperative Caching and MEC concept has been considered.
This Thesis demonstrates a design, implementation and evaluation for a Mobile-Edge computing Cooperative Caching system to deliver content to mobile users. A design is presented in a failure resilient and scalable practice using a light-weight synchronizing method. The system is implemented and deployed on Nokia Networks Radio Application Cloud Servers(Nokia Networks RACS) as intelligent MEC base-stations and finally the outcome of the system and the effect on bandwidth saving, CDN delay and user experience are evaluated
A Survey on Mobile Edge Computing for Video Streaming : Opportunities and Challenges
5G communication brings substantial improvements in the quality of service provided to various applications by achieving higher throughput and lower latency. However, interactive multimedia applications (e.g., ultra high definition video conferencing, 3D and multiview video streaming, crowd-sourced video streaming, cloud gaming, virtual and augmented reality) are becoming more ambitious with high volume and low latency video streams putting strict demands on the already congested networks. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is an emerging paradigm that extends cloud computing capabilities to the edge of the network i.e., at the base station level. To meet the latency requirements and avoid the end-to-end communication with remote cloud data centers, MEC allows to store and process video content (e.g., caching, transcoding, pre-processing) at the base stations. Both video on demand and live video streaming can utilize MEC to improve existing services and develop novel use cases, such as video analytics, and targeted advertisements. MEC is expected to reshape the future of video streaming by providing ultra-reliable and low latency streaming (e.g., in augmented reality, virtual reality, and autonomous vehicles), pervasive computing (e.g., in real-time video analytics), and blockchain-enabled architecture for secure live streaming. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of recent developments in MEC-enabled video streaming bringing unprecedented improvement to enable novel use cases. A detailed review of the state-of-the-art is presented covering novel caching schemes, optimal computation offloading, cooperative caching and offloading and the use of artificial intelligence (i.e., machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning) in MEC-assisted video streaming services.publishedVersionPeer reviewe
Improved planning and resource management in next generation green mobile communication networks
In upcoming years, mobile communication networks will experience a disruptive reinventing process through the deployment of post 5th Generation (5G) mobile networks. Profound impacts are expected on network planning processes, maintenance and operations, on mobile services, subscribers with major changes in their data consumption and generation behaviours, as well as on devices itself, with a myriad of different equipment communicating over such networks. Post 5G will be characterized by a profound transformation of several aspects: processes, technology, economic, social, but also environmental aspects, with energy efficiency and carbon neutrality playing an important role. It will represent a network of networks: where different types of access networks will coexist, an increasing diversity of devices of different nature, massive cloud computing utilization and subscribers with unprecedented data-consuming behaviours. All at greater throughput and quality of service, as unseen in previous generations.
The present research work uses 5G new radio (NR) latest release as baseline for developing the research activities, with future networks post 5G NR in focus. Two approaches were followed: i) method re-engineering, to propose new mechanisms and overcome existing or predictably existing limitations and ii) concept design and innovation, to propose and present innovative methods or mechanisms to enhance and improve the design, planning, operation, maintenance and optimization of 5G networks. Four main research areas were addressed, focusing on optimization and enhancement of 5G NR future networks, the usage of edge virtualized functions, subscriber’s behavior towards the generation of data and a carbon sequestering model aiming to achieve carbon neutrality. Several contributions have been made and demonstrated, either through models of methodologies that will, on each of the research areas, provide significant improvements and enhancements from the planning phase to the operational phase, always focusing on optimizing resource management. All the contributions are retro compatible with 5G NR and can also be applied to what starts being foreseen as future mobile networks. From the subscriber’s perspective and the ultimate goal of providing the best quality of experience possible, still considering the mobile network operator’s (MNO) perspective, the different proposed or developed approaches resulted in optimization methods for the numerous problems identified throughout the work. Overall, all of such contributed individually but aggregately as a whole to improve and enhance globally future mobile networks. Therefore, an answer to the main question was provided: how to further optimize a next-generation network - developed with optimization in mind - making it even more efficient while, simultaneously, becoming neutral concerning carbon emissions. The developed model for MNOs which aimed to achieve carbon neutrality through CO2 sequestration together with the subscriber’s behaviour model - topics still not deeply focused nowadays – are two of the main contributions of this thesis and of utmost importance for post-5G networks.
Video transport optimization techniques design and evaluation for next generation cellular networks
Video is foreseen to be the dominant type of data traffic in the Internet. This vision is supported by a number of studies which forecast that video traffic will drastically increase in the following years, surpassing Peer-to-Peer traffic in volume already in the current year.
Current infrastructures are not prepared to deal with this traffic increase. The current Internet, and in particular the mobile Internet, was not designed with video requirements in mind and, as a consequence, its architecture is very inefficient for handling this volume of video traffic. When a large part of traffic is associated to multimedia entertainment, most of the mobile infrastructure is used in a very inefficient way to provide such a simple service, thereby saturating the whole cellular network, and leading to perceived quality levels that are not adequate to support widespread end user acceptance.
The main goal of the research activity in this thesis is to evolve the mobile Internet architecture for efficient video traffic support. As video is expected to represent the majority of the traffic, the future architecture should efficiently support the requirements of this data type, and specific enhancements for video should be introduced at all layers of the protocol stack where needed. These enhancements need to cater for improved quality of experience, improved reliability in a mobile world (anywhere, anytime), lower exploitation cost, and increased flexibility.
In this thesis a set of video delivery mechanisms are designed to optimize the video transmission at different layers of the protocol stack and at different levels of the cellular network. Upon the architectural choices, resource allocation schemes are implemented to support a range of video applications, which cover video broadcast/multicast streaming, video on demand, real-time streaming, video progressive download and video upstreaming.
By means of simulation, the benefits of the designed mechanisms in terms of perceived video quality and network resource saving are shown and compared to existing solutions. Furthermore, selected modules are implemented in a real testbed and some experimental results are provided to support the development of such transport mechanisms in practice

Quality of experience and access network traffic management of HTTP adaptive video streaming
The thesis focuses on Quality of Experience (QoE) of HTTP adaptive video streaming (HAS) and traffic management in access networks to improve the QoE of HAS. First, the QoE impact of adaptation parameters and time on layer was investigated with subjective crowdsourcing studies. The results were used to compute a QoE-optimal adaptation strategy for given video and network conditions. This allows video service providers to develop and benchmark improved adaptation logics for HAS. Furthermore, the thesis investigated concepts to monitor video QoE on application and network layer, which can be used by network providers in the QoE-aware traffic management cycle. Moreover, an analytic and simulative performance evaluation of QoE-aware traffic management on a bottleneck link was conducted. Finally, the thesis investigated socially-aware traffic management for HAS via Wi-Fi offloading of mobile HAS flows. A model for the distribution of public Wi-Fi hotspots and a platform for socially-aware traffic management on private home routers was presented.
