Short of Transformation: American ADN Students\u27 Thoughts, Feelings, and Experiences of Studying Abroad in a Low-Income Country
ADN students are a large yet distinct subgroup of nursing students who require research and understanding. The purpose of this study was to describe the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of American associate degree nursing (ADN) students who participated in a short study abroad course in a low-income country. A qualitative, narrative method was used. Three categories emerged from the analysis. Participants revealed thoughts of âconstant comparisonsâ, feelings of an âemotional journeyâ, and they experienced âlearningâ. Participants did not demonstrate perspective transformation as defined by Mezirow as participants signified no intent for social action. Several potential blocks to perspective transformation were identified: egocentrism/emotional disconnect, perceived powerlessness/being overwhelmed, and a vacation mindset. The findings provide insight into the student experience of studying abroad. Transformative learning is not a guaranteed result. Nurse educators must consider strategies to foster transformation including discussing global systemic oppressors, international relations, coping, connecting, and social action
The role of phase interface energy in martensitic transformations: a lattice Monte-Carlo simulation
To study martensitic phase transformation we use a micromechanical model
based on statistical mechanics. Employing lattice Monte-Carlo simulations and
realistic material properties for shape-memory alloys (SMA), we investigate the
combined influence of the external stress, temperature, and interface energy
between the austenitic and martensitic phase on the transformation kinetics and
the effective material compliance. The one-dimensional model predicts well many
features of the martensitic transformation that are observed experimentally.
Particularly, we study the influence of the interface energy on the
transformation width and the effective compliance. In perspective, the obtained
results might be helpful for the design of new SMAs for more sensitive smart
structures and more efficient damping systems.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 22 reference
The Role of Electronic Services in Transformational Government: A Unified Services Theory Perspective and Implications for Trust
A major difficulty in deriving practical managerial insights from the transformational government perspective is that in the existing literature âtransformationâ is usually expressed in terms of desirable qualities rather than concrete transformation of structures and processes. Although it is possible to address transformational government issues from diverse areas such as Customer Relationship Management, Business Process Management, Management of Information Systems, and so forth, the adoption of an integrative theoretical basis that could accommodate different perspectives around âserviceâ, the core subject of interest, would certainly facilitate generation of useful managerial insights and approaches in the area. The main purpose of this conceptual paper is to fill this gap by presenting a Unified Services Theory (UST) perspective of issues concerning the development of electronic services in the transformational government area. The paper will focus upon customer orientation and process standardisation issues
Goodness-of-Fit Test: Khmaladze Transformation vs Empirical Likelihood
This paper compares two asymptotic distribution free methods for
goodness-of-fit test of one sample of location-scale family: Khmaladze
transformation and empirical likelihood methods. The comparison is made from
the perspective of empirical level and power obtained from simulations. When
testing for normal and logistic null distributions, we try various alternative
distributions and find that Khmaladze transformation method has better power in
most cases. R-package which was used for the simulation is available online.

Liquid retail:cultural perspectives on marketplace transformation
Inspired by Baumanâs notion of âliquidityâ, we problematize the socio-cultural dynamics taking place in contemporary retail. The notion of liquid retail enables reserachers to untangle marketplace transformation and to highlight developments centred around markets and market actors that jointly transform each other. This introduction underlines, as a point of departure, recent developments in retailing that have been marked by the corrosion of fixity and boundaries. We provide a short synopsis of marketplace transformation and liquid retail, from a socio-cultural perspective, and summarize the papers included in this special issue
