    An innovative approach for health care delivery to obese patients: from health needs identification to service integration

    In Europe, more than half of the population is overweight or obese, and effort to design, validate, and implement innovative approaches is required to address social and health unmet needs of obese patients in terms of health promotion, disease prevention, and integration of services. The challenge is improving the collaboration between the different health and care stakeholders involved in the lives of obese patients, changing the socio-cultural attitude towards food intake and other behaviours leading to a negative impact on their health-related quality of life. The digital transformation of health and care can support changes in healthcare systems, healthy policy, and approaches to patient care and better implementation of the different health promotion and disease prevention strategies between all the stakeholders and support obese patients. Based on the previously experience adopted by Blueprint Partners with the Blueprint persona and user scenario in the context of models of care and prevention, health policies and analysis of risk factors affecting health and quality of life of obese subjects, the study aimed to simulate an integrated care pathway, through a multidisciplinary approach, developing and applying solutions and good clinical practices addressing the social and health unmet needs of obese patients. A pilot study assessed the quality of life (QoL), adherence to the Mediterranean diet, efficacy and interoperability of a digital health platform, Paginemediche. it. A qualitative approach has been adopted to identify and specify key digital solutions and high-impact user scenarios in Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA). To achieve a successful result, an iterative and collaborative approach has been followed to develop a user-centred perspective to the identification of solutions addressing health needs with different complexity along the entire life-course. Four initial key topic areas were chosen and used to identify different digital solutions that may meet the needs of the population segments defined by both age and the complexity of their health status. All data, derived from the industry representatives in the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA), were collected via a survey to how digital solutions best met the needs of the various population segments represented by personas. Subsequently, innovative solutions were designed based on how a user from a target group interacts with technologies, developing "personas" belonging to specific "population segments" with different conditions and needs. Then, a high-impact user scenario, based on the correlation of personas' needs, good clinical practices and digital solutions available targeting needs which playing a role in the health and care delivery for the persona, has been developed. In the end, to evaluate how digital solutions and technologies can support obese patients during their weight loss or management of their related comorbidities in current service provision, ten obese patients were enrolled to evaluate a Digital Health platform, pagininemediche.it, developed. Matilde, the Blueprint persona developed, highlighted some of the main needs (social support, development of a health-friendly environment and educational program on healthy nutrition and physical activity) that may be addressed by integrating innovative solutions in the care of obese patients. Based on her profile, a high-impact user scenario diagram correlates health and social needs with digital solutions and can help key actors in the creation of a well-integrated care approach. Moreover, the evaluation of the digital platform, paginemediche.it, demonstrated how digital solutions can motivate and support obese patients in changing habits towards a healthy lifestyle, although no further statistical significance has been identified in the quality of life assessment because of the limited number of the patients, and short period of observation. Overweight or obese patients tend to be marginalized and the subject of a real social stigma. Digital solutions may be useful to overcome psychological factors that prevent obese patients from starting their journey for a lifestyle change. The suggested approach, which considers health needs, IT skills, socioeconomic context, interoperability, and integration gaps that may influence the adoption of innovative solutions tailored to improve health outcomes is person-centred, and identify what is important for obese patients. The implementation of a persona and user scenario approach may also be useful for the early involvement of end-users in solutions' design and adaptation, increasing adherence, and the effectiveness of digital solutions. Persona profiles, the user scenario, and the related digital solution also consider the potential benefits that can derive for both patients and health system in term of reduced emergency room admissions, waiting lists, and health related expenditures

    Valuing service design: Lessons from SROI

    This paper describes lessons learned through the use of a Social Return On Investment (SROI) approach to evaluate a completed Service Design project with a large vocational training company. It is written by the Service Design team that led the original project and who subsequently used SROI to evaluate its impact. Experiencing the SROI evaluation process first-hand, in a live setting, is the approach by which the authors develop a discussion about its potential fit with Service Design processes. The SROI method enabled both the design team and the case-study organisation to acknowledge and measure additional social/stakeholder benefits created through the design work. These elements would not have been visible in a traditional ROI evaluation. There is the promise of a useful fit between SROI and Service Design in larger projects. The approach could be used as a framework for forecasting and evolving indicators for likely social impacts (and their financial proxies) throughout a Service Design project, to guide decisions at each stage. Its usefulness depends, however, on there being a will at Design Management level to rehearse the approach and develop tailored approaches towards it. In the current study, the method was found to be time-intensive for the Service Design team as lay-users and also for some key project stakeholders, but that could be better managed with experience. SROI will not suit every project, however may fit very well with those projects that already count a full business plan amongst their deliverables. One of the main limitations encountered in using the SROI process was difficulty identifying appropriate proxies for the calculations. It is proposed that social benefit might be expressed to multidisciplinary co-design teams through visual and emotive means rather than in quantitative, financial terms. Such ‘visual proxies’ would better fit with the semantic mode of design

    ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks.     Governance of Digital Health Data on Cooperatively Organized Platforms – a Design Thinking Approach

    More and more stakeholders are collecting data for improving their services: from scientific research over public administration to commercial enterprises. Existing data management services offer few rights of co-determination for their users. Data cooperatives aim to provide a democratic alternative to this. Through such a platform cooperative members are supposed to be enabled to share their data in a self-determined way. In this paper, we present a design thinking-based user research with stakeholders of data cooperatives in a health-data context. We provide an overview of motivations, expectations, and interfaces between a cooperative and individuals as cooperative members, organizations, representatives from research, and policy makers. In an iterative process, 34 interviews were conducted with different stakeholder groups, from which 7 personas were subsequently derived. For these, 4 prototypes were developed and tested with potential users. Our results show that all interviewed groups were very interested in the concept of data cooperatives. At the same time, it proves challenging to reconcile the conflicting internal and external requirements and to implement attractive value propositions for all stakeholders

    Contributos para o desenvolvimento de aplicações para crianças com problemas de comunicação e integração

    Communication, to express our needs and ideas, is a fundamental piece of our daily lives, enabling our interaction with others and contributing to establish social bonds. When this ability is affected, whether by contextual issues (e.g., noisy environment) or intrinsic conditions (e.g., speech articulation difficulties) it creates a challenging scenario for both the individuals and those surrounding them. Children diagnosed with Austism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a notable example of an audience facing these challenges given their frequent difficulties to communicate and socially interact with others. In this context, their challenges not only affect their ability to integrate with family and friends, but can also influence how they perform at school, an important environment for their development. In recent years, efforts have been made to propose technological solutions that contribute to support these children in their communication, but most of the work in the literature mainly focuses on the child entailing a support that does not truly addresses integration. Considering this context, we argue that these challenges need to be addressed considering the needs and motivations of children with ASD, but also keeping in mind the motivations of those around them, helping parents, teachers and friends to take part in the integration. Profiting from previous work on the characterization of the needs and motivations of children with ASD, their families, and teachers, the work carried out explores different communication-related scenarios, at school and at home, and proposes a set of requirements that should be considered to serve them. Considering these requirements, and adopting an iterative user-centered design approach, a first proof-of-concept application is proposed. AMICA, Adaptive Multimodal Integrated Communication for All, is a multi-platform, multiuser and multimodal application that aims to illustrate how some issues that affect children with ASD and those surrounding them can be addressed in order to their lives easier. At its current stage, AMICA already encompasses support for several communication features adapted to serve the child, family, friends, and teachers providing them a space for interaction. The modular multi-platform nature of the work carried out enables AMICA as a testbed for further research on different multimodal ways of communication for children with ASD (e.g., gaze or pictograms), but, also, by allowing the participation of different users, it fosters first studies on the dynamic nature of such communication.A comunicação, para expressar as nossas necessidades e ideias, é uma peça fundamental do nosso dia a dia, permitindo a nossa interação com os outros e contribuindo para estabelecer laços sociais. Quando essa capacidade é afetada, seja por questões contextuais (por exemplo, ambiente ruidoso) ou condições intrínsecas (por exemplo, dificuldades de articulação de fala), ela cria um cenário desafiante tanto para os indivíduos como para os que os rodeiam. As crianças diagnosticadas com Perturbação do Espetro do Autismo (PEA) são um exemplo notável de uma audiência que enfrenta esses desafios, devido às suas frequentes dificuldades para comunicar e interagir socialmente com os outros. Neste contexto, os seus desafios não afetam apenas a sua capacidade de integração com a família e os amigos, podendo, também, influenciar o seu desempenho na escola, um ambiente importante para o seu desenvolvimento. Nos últimos anos, têm sido feitos esforços para propor soluções tecnológicas que contribuam para apoiar essas crianças na sua comunicação, mas a maior parte do trabalho na literatura concentra-se principalmente no uso, pela criança, de apoios que não abordam verdadeiramente a integração. Considerando esse contexto, argumentamos que esses desafios precisam de ser abordados considerando as necessidades e motivações das crianças com PEA, mas também tendo em mente as motivações das pessoas ao seu redor, ajudando pais, professores e amigos a participarem na integração. Aproveitando os trabalhos anteriores sobre a caracterização das necessidades e motivações das crianças com PEA, as suas famílias e professores, o trabalho realizado explora diferentes cenários relacionados à comunicação, na escola e em casa, e propõe um conjunto de requisitos que devem ser considerados para os servir. Considerando esses requisitos e adotando uma abordagem de projeto iterativa, centrada no utilizador, uma primeira aplicação de prova de conceito é proposta. AMICA, Adaptive Multimodal Integrated Communication for All, é uma aplicação multi-plataforma, multi-utilizador e multimodal que visa ilustrar como algumas questões que afetam as crianças com PEA e aqueles que as rodeiam podem ser abordadas para tentar facilitar as suas vidas. No estado atual, a AMICA já engloba o suporte a vários recursos de comunicação adaptados para atender a criança, a família, os amigos e os professores, proporcionando-lhes um espaço de interação. A natureza modular multi-plataforma do trabalho realizado permite que AMICA seja uma base para mais pesquisas sobre diferentes formas multimodais de comunicação para crianças com PEA (por exemplo, olhar ou pictogramas), mas, também, permitindo a participação de diferentes utilizadores, promove primeiros estudos sobre a natureza dinâmica de tal comunicação.Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e Telemátic

    An intelligent multi-agent memory assistant

    World population is ageing and increasingly scarce resources are required to cover the needs of everyone adequately. Medical conditions, especially memory problems, restrict the daily life of a broad slice of the elderly population, affect their independence. To prevent this, providing the right care and assistance while having in mind the costs implicated is essential. One possible path is to work with resources that we already have today and create innovative solutions to achieve the required level of support. There are not many solution either technological or not to prevent memory loss. In this work we present a possible solution aimed at restoring or maintaining the independence of elderly people, through the use of so-called Memory Assistants. We thus present an Intelligent Multi-Agent Memory Assistant designed to help people with memory problems remember their events and activities. The implementation of an event manager, free time manger, medication remainder and a sensory system, to manage and monitor the user, we aim to improve their quality of life and increase their independence
