    Self-adaptation via concurrent multi-action evaluation for unknown context

    Context-aware computing has been attracting growing attention in recent years. Generally, there are several ways for a context-aware system to select a course of action for a particular change of context. One way is for the system developers to encompass all possible context changes in the domain knowledge. Other methods include system inferences and adaptive learning whereby the system executes one action and evaluates the outcome and self-adapts/self-learns based on that. However, in situations where a system encounters unknown contexts, the iterative approach would become unfeasible when the size of the action space increases. Providing efficient solutions to this problem has been the main goal of this research project. Based on the developed abstract model, the designed methodology replaces the single action implementation and evaluation by multiple actions implemented and evaluated concurrently. This parallel evaluation of actions speeds up significantly the evolution time taken to select the best action suited to unknown context compared to the iterative approach. The designed and implemented framework efficiently carries out concurrent multi-action evaluation when an unknown context is encountered and finds the best course of action. Two concrete implementations of the framework were carried out demonstrating the usability and adaptability of the framework across multiple domains. The first implementation was in the domain of database performance tuning. The concrete implementation of the framework demonstrated the ability of concurrent multi-action evaluation technique to performance tune a database when performance is regressed for an unknown reason. The second implementation demonstrated the ability of the framework to correctly determine the threshold price to be used in a name-your-own-price channel when an unknown context is encountered. In conclusion the research introduced a new paradigm of a self-adaptation technique for context-aware application. Among the existing body of work, the concurrent multi-action evaluation is classified under the abstract concept of experiment-based self-adaptation techniques

    A Unified Recommendation Framework for Data-driven, People-centric Smart Home Applications

    With the rapid growth in the number of things that can be connected to the internet, Recommendation Systems for the IoT (RSIoT) have become more significant in helping a variety of applications to meet user preferences, and such applications can be smart home, smart tourism, smart parking, m-health and so on. In this thesis, we propose a unified recommendation framework for data-driven, people-centric smart home applications. The framework involves three main stages: complex activity detection, constructing recommendations in timely manner, and insuring the data integrity. First, we review the latest state-of-the-art recommendations methods and development of applications for recommender system in the IoT so, as to form an overview of the current research progress. Challenges of using IoT for recommendation systems are introduced and explained. A reference framework to compare the existing studies and guide future research and practices is provided. In order to meet the requirements of complex activity detection that helps our system to understand what activity or activities our user is undertaking in relatively high level. We provide adequate resources to be fit for the recommender system. Furthermore, we consider two inherent challenges of RSIoT, that is, capturing dynamicity patterns of human activities and system update without a focus on user feedback. Based on these, we design a Reminder Care System (RCS) which harnesses the advantages of deep reinforcement learning (DQN) to further address these challenges. Then we utilize a contextual bandit approach for improving the quality of recommendations by considering the context as an input. We aim to address not only the two previous challenges of RSIoT but also to learn the best action in different scenarios and treat each state independently. Last but not least, we utilize a blockchain technology to ensure the safety of data storage in addition to decentralized feature. In the last part, we discuss a few open issues and provide some insights for future directions

    Sistema inteligente web de recomendación de actividades turísticas para una provincia del Perú

    Hoy en día un tour turístico es un proceso complejo que consume tiempo al turista, porque no sólo busca información si no tiene que tomar en cuenta o considerar algunas restricciones como su presupuesto, fecha de viaje y al hacer todo esto, él debe poder planificarlo mayormente con la información que encuentra en la web y estos son numerosas páginas webs informando de distintas posibilidades de visitas. En esta tesis se propone un sistema web de recomendación de lugares turísticos en Lima denominado SIRETUR que considera los días de visita, el presupuesto asignado y el perfil del turista; cuya meta es ayudar a resolver la sobrecarga de información que hay en la web sobre actividades en Lima, facilitar la búsqueda y decisión a sus usuarios y que se encuentren satisfechos con la recomendación. Se combinó las técnicas “Basado en Contenido” y “Filtrado Colaborativo” para generar un sistema híbrido que aproveche las ventajas de cada uno y mejore la precisión de la recomendación. Adicionalmente, para facilitar el acceso se muestra los lugares turísticos recomendados en la interfaz de Google Maps. El sistema ha sido validado teniendo como usuarios finales a un grupo de turistas, en donde se tomó encuestas de satisfacción con el fin de medir su grado de conformidad respecto a la recomendación proporcionada. En los resultados, el 96% de los encuestados afirmó que la recomendación fue precisa y el 98% que fue fácil de usar

    Aquesta tesi gira entorn de la hipòtesi de la metodologia i mecanismes de composició de serveis i com es poden aplicar a diferents camps d'aplicació per a orquestrar de manera eficient comunicacions i processos flexibles i sensibles al context. Més concretament, se centra en dos camps d'aplicació: la distribució eficient i sensible al context de contingut multimèdia i els serveis d'una xarxa elèctrica intel·ligent. En aquest últim camp es centra en la gestió de la infraestructura, cap a la definició d'una Software Defined Utility (SDU), que proposa una nova manera de gestionar la Smart Grid amb un enfocament basat en programari, que permeti un funcionament molt més flexible de la infraestructura de xarxa elèctrica. Per tant, revisa el context, els requisits i els reptes, així com els enfocaments de la composició de serveis per a aquests camps. Fa especial èmfasi en la combinació de la composició de serveis amb arquitectures Future Network (FN), presentant una proposta de FN orientada a serveis per crear comunicacions adaptades i sota demanda. També es presenten metodologies i mecanismes de composició de serveis per operar sobre aquesta arquitectura, i posteriorment, es proposa el seu ús (en conjunció o no amb l'arquitectura FN) en els dos camps d'estudi. Finalment, es presenta la investigació i desenvolupament realitzat en l'àmbit de les xarxes intel·ligents, proposant diverses parts de la infraestructura SDU amb exemples d'aplicació de composició de serveis per dissenyar seguretat dinàmica i flexible o l'orquestració i gestió de serveis i recursos dins la infraestructura de l'empresa elèctrica.Esta tesis gira en torno a la hipótesis de la metodología y mecanismos de composición de servicios y cómo se pueden aplicar a diferentes campos de aplicación para orquestar de manera eficiente comunicaciones y procesos flexibles y sensibles al contexto. Por último, se presenta la investigación y desarrollo realizado en el ámbito de las redes inteligentes, proponiendo varias partes de la infraestructura SDU con ejemplos de aplicación de composición de servicios para diseñar seguridad dinámica y flexible o la orquestación y gestión de servicios y recursos dentro de la infraestructura de la empresa eléctrica.This thesis revolves around the hypothesis the service composition methodology and mechanisms and how they can be applied to different fields of application in order to efficiently orchestrate flexible and context-aware communications and processes. More concretely, it focuses on two fields of application that are the context-aware media distribution and smart grid services and infrastructure management, towards a definition of a Software-Defined Utility (SDU), which proposes a new way of managing the Smart Grid following a software-based approach that enable a much more flexible operation of the power infrastructure. Hence, it reviews the context, requirements and challenges of these fields, as well as the service composition approaches. It makes special emphasis on the combination of service composition with Future Network (FN) architectures, presenting a service-oriented FN proposal for creating context-aware on-demand communication services. Service composition methodology and mechanisms are also presented in order to operate over this architecture, and afterwards, proposed for their usage (in conjunction or not with the FN architecture) in the deployment of context-aware media distribution and Smart Grids. Finally, the research and development done in the field of Smart Grids is depicted, proposing several parts of the SDU infrastructure, with examples of service composition application for designing dynamic and flexible security for smart metering or the orchestration and management of services and data resources within the utility infrastructure

    Grid-based semantic integration of heterogeneous data resources : implementation on a HealthGrid

    The semantic integration of geographically distributed and heterogeneous data resources still remains a key challenge in Grid infrastructures. Today's mainstream Grid technologies hold the promise to meet this challenge in a systematic manner, making data applications more scalable and manageable. The thesis conducts a thorough investigation of the problem, the state of the art, and the related technologies, and proposes an Architecture for Semantic Integration of Data Sources (ASIDS) addressing the semantic heterogeneity issue. It defines a simple mechanism for the interoperability of heterogeneous data sources in order to extract or discover information regardless of their different semantics. The constituent technologies of this architecture include Globus Toolkit (GT4) and OGSA-DAI (Open Grid Service Architecture Data Integration and Access) alongside other web services technologies such as XML (Extensive Markup Language). To show this, the ASIDS architecture was implemented and tested in a realistic setting by building an exemplar application prototype on a HealthGrid (pilot implementation). The study followed an empirical research methodology and was informed by extensive literature surveys and a critical analysis of the relevant technologies and their synergies. The two literature reviews, together with the analysis of the technology background, have provided a good overview of the current Grid and HealthGrid landscape, produced some valuable taxonomies, explored new paths by integrating technologies, and more importantly illuminated the problem and guided the research process towards a promising solution. Yet the primary contribution of this research is an approach that uses contemporary Grid technologies for integrating heterogeneous data resources that have semantically different. data fields (attributes).
