How can early years services improve access and inclusion into early years settings and primary schools for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children?
This research project explored how interagency working could put such policy and guidance into
practice and considered what this work might look like at grassroots level. The research
coordinator used the research to pilot a strategy, which if successful, could be rolled out and shared with other services
We analyze some personal characteristics of the members of the audit committee of the
Spanish listed firms and the relation between these characteristics and earnings management.
We find a non-linear relation with tenure, so that long tenures can initially compromise the
directors’ independence but, after a given threshold, longer tenures improve the expertise of
the members. Serving in too many boards has a negative influence on the ability of directors to
detect earnings management, and higher academic background and more diverse professional
background improve the directors’ abilities.
Citing the Elite: The Burden of Authorial Anxiety
Academic legal writing is known for extensive citation. Generally, scholars who study citation practices are increasingly likely to link citation with authors\u27 attempts to manage their impression. This Note offers an explanation of why authors of law review articles use citation as a means of managing impression. It combines a historical analysis that shows why excessive citation became conventional with a literary analysis that shows why excessive citation was unique in its ability to aid academics in substantively contributing to the bench and bar. It further shows how, because of the historic and literary significance of citation, a norm compelling excessive citation pervades the legal community. Finally, this Note questions this norm\u27s continued value given that excessive citation exacts a collateral price on the legal community and that law review readers are increasingly diverse
Time to separate the men from the beasts: symbolic anticipation as the typically human subjective dimension
In this paper it is argued that the dividing line that runs between the human psyche as opposed to any other complex system is made up by symbolic anticipation. The functionality of the human mind as an anticipatory system is entirely caught up in the crucial role that finiteness, shortage or lack plays for human beings. Anticipation for us is the way by which this negative finiteness or lack is translated into a positive longing, want or desire. We take a look at the three dimensional view of Jacques Lacan regarding these matters in a sophistical example and we illustrate how anticipation as a Symbolic phenomenon is distinct from the Imaginary or the Real register. As Lacan points out anticipation creates a symbolic social link which binds two or more interacting humans together in an anticipatory relationship. Beliefs, expectations and convictions are the typically human social links which ground human interaction and set it apart from other forms of social interaction we can observe in other complex biological entities

What's in a name? the UK newspapers' fabrication and commodification of Foxy Knoxy
This chapter analyses how, immediately after the arrest of Amanda Knox, the UK’s national press played a pivotal role in transforming the American student into ‘Foxy Knoxy’, the duplicitous, psychologically disturbed femme fatale who orchestrated and participated in the sexually motivated murder of her flatmate, Meredith Kercher. This case exemplifies what happens when UK reporting restrictions do not apply, leaving journalists free to employ imaginative practices to create the infotainment spectacle that ‘Foxy Knoxy’ became and to ignore her legal right to a presumption of innocence. It is also the first example of journalists mining suspects’ social media sites and re-contextualising their text and images to provide ‘evidential’ sources of a guilty persona
Once a criminal always a criminal? A 15-year analysis of recidivism among female prisoners in Massachusetts
The study of prisoner recidivism has long captured the interest of criminal justice researchers. Recidivism studies attempt to answer a variety of questions ranging from what are the characteristics of those who reoffend, what factors predict offender recidivism, and how long does a recidivist remain in the community before finding themselves in conflict with the law again. Unlike many studies that examine recidivism over a relatively short term – three to five years, this study investigates recidivism over a 15-year period among a group of female offenders released from a Massachusetts prison in 1995. Findings point to three propositions moving forward. First, correctional programming geared specifically toward youthful offenders might be necessary to promote desistance over the life course. Second, offender monitoring and accountability up to 36 months after release from incarceration may reduce the risk of re-offending. Third, studies with a follow-up period of ten years would be a valuable addition to the recidivism literature to advance our understanding of chronic offending among women.
