    Permanence and almost periodic solution of a multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system with time varying delays on time scales

    In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of a multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system with time varying delays on time scales. By establishing some dynamic inequalities on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, by means of the almost periodic functional hull theory on time scales and Lyapunov functional, some criteria are obtained for the existence, uniqueness and global attractivity of almost periodic solutions of the model. Our results complement and extend some scientific work in recent years. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the main results.Comment: 31page

    Asymptotic behavior of age-structured and delayed Lotka-Volterra models

    In this work we investigate some asymptotic properties of an age-structured Lotka-Volterra model, where a specific choice of the functional parameters allows us to formulate it as a delayed problem, for which we prove the existence of a unique coexistence equilibrium and characterize the existence of a periodic solution. We also exhibit a Lyapunov functional that enables us to reduce the attractive set to either the nontrivial equilibrium or to a periodic solution. We then prove the asymptotic stability of the nontrivial equilibrium where, depending on the existence of the periodic trajectory, we make explicit the basin of attraction of the equilibrium. Finally, we prove that these results can be extended to the initial PDE problem.Comment: 29 page

    Dynamic behaviors of a delay differential equation model of plankton allelopathy

    AbstractIn this paper, we consider a modified delay differential equation model of the growth of n-species of plankton having competitive and allelopathic effects on each other. We first obtain the sufficient conditions which guarantee the permanence of the system. As a corollary, for periodic case, we obtain a set of delay-dependent condition which ensures the existence of at least one positive periodic solution of the system. After that, by means of a suitable Lyapunov functional, sufficient conditions are derived for the global attractivity of the system. For the two-dimensional case, under some suitable assumptions, we prove that one of the components will be driven to extinction while the other will stabilize at a certain solution of a logistic equation. Examples show the feasibility of the main results

    Work by Cushing et al. \cite{Cushing} and Kot et al. \cite{Kot} demonstrate that chaotic behavior does occur in biological systems. We demonstrate that chaotic behavior can enable the survival/thriving of the species involved in a system. We adopt the concepts of persistence/permanence as measures of survival/thriving of the species \cite{EVG}. We utilize present chaotic behavior and a control algorithm based on \cite{Vincent97,Vincent2001} to push a non-permanent system into permanence. The algorithm uses the chaotic orbits present in the system to obtain the desired state. We apply the algorithm to a Lotka-Volterra type two-prey, one-predator model from \cite{Harvesting}, a ratio-dependent one-prey, two-predator model from \cite{EVG} and a simple prey-specialist predator-generalist predator (for ex: plant-insect pest-spider) interaction model \cite{Upad} and demonstrate its effectiveness in taking advantage of chaotic behavior to achieve a desirable state for all species involved
