    Service quality assurance for the IPTV networks

    The objective of the proposed research is to design and evaluate end-to-end solutions to support the Quality of Experience (QoE) for the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service. IPTV is a system that integrates voice, video, and data delivery into a single Internet Protocol (IP) framework to enable interactive broadcasting services at the subscribers. It promises significant advantages for both service providers and subscribers. For instance, unlike conventional broadcasting systems, IPTV broadcasts will not be restricted by the limited number of channels in the broadcast/radio spectrum. Furthermore, IPTV will provide its subscribers with the opportunity to access and interact with a wide variety of high-quality on-demand video content over the Internet. However, these advantages come at the expense of stricter quality of service (QoS) requirements than traditional Internet applications. Since IPTV is considered as a real-time broadcast service over the Internet, the success of the IPTV service depends on the QoE perceived by the end-users. The characteristics of the video traffic as well as the high-quality requirements of the IPTV broadcast impose strict requirements on transmission delay. IPTV framework has to provide mechanisms to satisfy the stringent delay, jitter, and packet loss requirements of the IPTV service over lossy transmission channels with varying characteristics. The proposed research focuses on error recovery and channel change latency problems in IPTV networks. Our specific aim is to develop a content delivery framework that integrates content features, IPTV application requirements, and network characteristics in such a way that the network resource utilization can be optimized for the given constraints on the user perceived service quality. To achieve the desired QoE levels, the proposed research focuses on the design of resource optimal server-based and peer-assisted delivery techniques. First, by analyzing the tradeoffs on the use of proactive and reactive repair techniques, a solution that optimizes the error recovery overhead is proposed. Further analysis on the proposed solution is performed by also focusing on the use of multicast error recovery techniques. By investigating the tradeoffs on the use of network-assisted and client-based channel change solutions, distributed content delivery frameworks are proposed to optimize the error recovery performance. Next, bandwidth and latency tradeoffs associated with the use of concurrent delivery streams to support the IPTV channel change are analyzed, and the results are used to develop a resource-optimal channel change framework that greatly improves the latency performance in the network. For both problems studied in this research, scalability concerns for the IPTV service are addressed by properly integrating peer-based delivery techniques into server-based solutions.Ph.D

    Service oriented networking for multimedia applications in broadband wireless networks

    Extensive efforts have been focused on deploying broadband wireless networks. Providing mobile users with high speed network connectivity will let them run various multimedia applications on their wireless devices. In order to successfully deploy and operate broadband wireless networks, it is crucial to design efficient methods for supporting various services and applications in broadband wireless networks. Moreover, the existing access-oriented networking solutions are not able to fully address all the issues of supporting various applications with different quality of service requirements. Thus, service-oriented networking has been recently proposed and has gained much attention. This dissertation discusses the challenges and possible solutions for supporting multimedia applications in broadband wireless networks. The service requirements of different multimedia applications such as video streaming and Voice over IP (VoIP) are studied and some novel service-oriented networking solutions for supporting these applications in broadband wireless networks are proposed. The performance of these solutions is examined in WiMAX networks which are the promising technology for broadband wireless access in the near future. WiMAX networks are based on the IEEE 802.16 standards which have defined different Quality of Service (QoS) classes to support a broad range of applications with varying service requirements to mobile and stationary users. The growth of multimedia traffic that requires special quality of service from the network will impose new constraints on network designers who should wisely allocate the limited resources to users based on their required quality of service. An efficient resource management and network design depends upon gaining accurate information about the traffic profile of user applications. In this dissertation, the access level traffic profile of VoIP applications are studied first, and then a realistic distribution model for VoIP traffic is proposed. Based on this model, an algorithm to allocate resources for VoIP applications in WiMAX networks is investigated. Later, the challenges and possible solutions for transmitting MPEG video streams in wireless networks are discussed. The MPEG traffic model adopted by the WiMAX Forum is introduced and different application-oriented solutions for enhancing the performance of wireless networks with respect to MPEG video streaming applications are explained. An analytical framework to verify the performance of the proposed solutions is discoursed, and it is shown that the proposed solutions will improve the efficiency of VoIP applications and the quality of streaming applications over wireless networks. Finally, conclusions are drawn and future works are discussed

    Optimum hybrid error correction scheme under strict delay constraints

    In packet-based wireless networks, media-based services often require a multicast-enabled transport that guarantees quasi error free transmission under strict delay constraints. Furthermore, both multicast and delay constraints deeply influence the architecture of erasure error recovery (EER). Therefore, we propose a general architecture of EER and study its optimization in this thesis. The architecture integrates overall existing important EER techniques: Automatic Repeat Request, Forward Error Correction and Hybrid ARQ techniques. Each of these EER techniques can be viewed as a special case of Hybrid Error Correction (HEC) schemes. Since the Gilbert-Elliott (GE) erasure error model has been proven to be valid for a wide range of packet based wireless networks, in this thesis, we present the general architecture and its optimization based on the GE channel model. The optimization target is to satisfy a certain target packet loss level under strict delay constraints efficiently. Through the optimization for a given real-time multicast scenario, the total needed redundancy information can be minimized by choosing the best HEC scheme automatically among the entire schemes included in the architecture. As a result, the performance of the optimum HEC scheme can approach the Shannon limit as closely as possible dynamically according to current channel state information.In Paket-basierten drahtlosen Netzwerken benötigen Medien-basierte Dienste oft Multicast-fähigen Transport, der quasi-fehlerfreie Übertragung unter strikten Zeitgrenzen garantiert. Außerdem beeinflussen sowohl Multicast als auch Zeitbegrenzungen stark die Architektur von Auslöschungs-Fehlerschutz (Erasure Error Recovery, EER). Daher stellen wir eine allgemeine Architektur der EER vor und untersuchen ihre Optimierung in dieser Arbeit. Die Architektur integriert alle wichtigen EER-Techniken: Automatic Repeat Request, Forward Error Correction und Hybrid ARQ. Jede dieser EER-Techniken kann als Spezialfall der Hybrid Error Correction (HEC) angesehen werden. Da das Gilbert-Elliot (GE) Auslöschungs-Fehler-Modell für einen weiten Bereich von Paket-basierten drahtlosen Netzwerken als gültig erwiesen wurde, präsentieren wir in dieser Arbeit die allgemeine Architektur und deren Optimierung basierend auf dem GE Kanalmodell. Zweck der Optimierung ist es, eine gewisse Ziel-Paketfehlerrate unter strikten Zeitgrenzen effizient zu erreichen. Durch die Optimierung für ein gegebenes Echtzeit-Mutlicast-Szenario kann die insgesamt benötigte Redundanz-Information minimiert werden. Dies erfolgt durch automatische Auswahl des optimalen HEC Schemas unter all den Schemata, die in die Architektur integriert sind. Das optimale HEC-Schema kann die Shannon Grenze so nahe wie möglich, dynamisch, entsprechend dem derzeitigen Kanalzustand, erreichen

    Today user experience is becoming a reliable indicator for service providers and telecommunication operators to convey overall end to end system functioning. Moreover, to compete for a prominent market share, different network operators and service providers should retain and increase the customers’ subscription. To fulfil these requirements they require an efficient Quality of Experience (QoE) monitoring and estimation. However, QoE is a subjective metric and its evaluation is expensive and time consuming since it requires human participation. Therefore, there is a need for an objective tool that can measure the QoE objectively with reasonable accuracy in real-Time. As a first contribution, we analyzed the impact of network conditions on Video on Demand (VoD) services. We also proposed an objective QoE estimation tool that uses fuzzy expert system to estimate QoE from network layer QoS parameters. As a second contribution, we analyzed the impact of MAC layer QoS parameters on VoD services over IEEE 802.11n wireless networks. We also proposed an objective QoE estimation tool that uses random neural network to estimate QoE from the MAC layer perspective. As our third contribution, we analyzed the effect of different adaption scenarios on QoE of adaptive bit rate streaming. We also developed a web based subjective test platform that can be easily integrated in a crowdsourcing platform for performing subjective tests. As our fourth contribution, we analyzed the impact of different web QoS parameters on web service QoE. We also proposed a novel machine learning algorithm i.e. fuzzy rough hybrid expert system for estimating web service QoE objectivelyDe nos jours, l’expérience de l'utilisateur appelé en anglais « User Experience » est devenue l’un des indicateurs les plus pertinents pour les fournisseurs de services ainsi que pour les opérateurs de télécommunication pour analyser le fonctionnement de bout en bout de leurs systèmes (du terminal client, en passant par le réseaux jusqu’à l’infrastructure des services etc.). De plus, afin d’entretenir leur part de marché et rester compétitif, les différents opérateurs de télécommunication et les fournisseurs de services doivent constamment conserver et accroître le nombre de souscription des clients. Pour répondre à ces exigences, ils doivent disposer de solutions efficaces de monitoring et d’estimation de la qualité d'expérience (QoE) afin d’évaluer la satisfaction de leur clients. Cependant, la QoE est une mesure qui reste subjective et son évaluation est coûteuse et fastidieuse car elle nécessite une forte participation humaine (appelé panel de d’évaluation). Par conséquent, la conception d’un outil qui peut mesurer objectivement cette qualité d'expérience avec une précision raisonnable et en temps réel est devenue un besoin primordial qui constitue un challenge intéressant à résoudre. Comme une première contribution, nous avons analysé l'impact du comportement d’un réseau sur la qualité des services de vidéo à la demande (VOD). Nous avons également proposé un outil d'estimation objective de la QoE qui utilise le système expert basé sur la logique floue pour évaluer la QoE à partir des paramètres de qualité de service de la couche réseau. Dans une deuxième contribution, nous avons analysé l'impact des paramètres QoS de couche MAC sur les services de VoD dans le cadre des réseaux sans fil IEEE 802.11n. Nous avons également proposé un outil d'estimation objective de la QoE qui utilise le réseau aléatoire de neurones pour estimer la QoE dans la perspective de la couche MAC. Pour notre troisième contribution, nous avons analysé l'effet de différents scénarios d'adaptation sur la QoE dans le cadre du streaming adaptatif au débit. Nous avons également développé une plate-Forme Web de test subjectif qui peut être facilement intégré dans une plate-Forme de crowd-Sourcing pour effectuer des tests subjectifs. Finalement, pour notre quatrième contribution, nous avons analysé l'impact des différents paramètres de qualité de service Web sur leur QoE.     Multicast MAC extensions for high rate real-time traffic in wireless LANs

    Nowadays we are rapidly moving from a mainly textual-based to a multimedia-based Internet, for which the widely deployed IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs can be one of the promising candidates to make them available to users anywhere, anytime, on any device. However, it is still a challenge to support group-oriented real-time multimedia services, such as video-on-demand, video conferencing, distance educations, mobile entertainment services, interactive games, etc., in wireless LANs, as the current protocols do not support multicast, in particular they just send multicast packets in open-loop as broadcast packets, i.e., without any possible acknowledgements or retransmissions. In this thesis, we focus on MAC layer reliable multicast approaches which outperform upper layer ones with both shorter delays and higher efficiencies. Different from polling based approaches, which suffer from long delays, low scalabilities and low efficiencies, we explore a feedback jamming mechanism where negative acknowledgement (NACK) frames are allowed from the non-leader receivers to destroy the acknowledgement (ACK) frame from the single leader receiver and prompts retransmissions from the sender. Based on the feedback jamming scheme, we propose two MAC layer multicast error correction protocols, SEQ driven Leader Based Protocol (SEQ-LBP) and Hybrid Leader Based Protocol (HLBP), the former is an Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) scheme while the later combines both ARQ and the packet level Forward Error Correction (FEC). We evaluate the feedback jamming probabilities and the performances of SEQ-LBP and HLBP based on theoretical analyses, NS-2 simulations and experiments on a real test-bed built with consumer wireless LAN cards. Test results confirm the feasibility of the feedback jamming scheme and the outstanding performances of the proposed protocols SEQ-LBP and HLBP, in particular SEQ-LBP is good for small multicast groups due to its short delay, effectiveness and simplicity while HLBP is better for large multicast groups because of its high efficiency and high scalability with respect to the number of receivers per group.Zurzeit vollzieht sich ein schneller Wechsel vom vorwiegend textbasierten zum multimediabasierten Internet. Die weitverbreiteten IEEE 802.11 Drahtlosnetzwerke sind vielversprechende Kandidaten, um das Internet für Nutzer überall, jederzeit und auf jedem Gerät verfügbar zu machen. Die Unterstützung gruppenorientierter Echtzeit-Dienste in drahtlosen lokalen Netzen ist jedoch immer noch eine Herausforderung. Das liegt daran, dass aktuelle Protokolle keinen Multicast unterstützen. Sie senden Multicast-Pakete vielmehr in einer "Open Loop"-Strategie als Broadcast-Pakete, d. h. ohne jegliche Rückmeldung (feedback) oder Paketwiederholungen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit, anders als in den auf Teilnehmereinzelabfragen (polling) basierenden Ansätzen, die unter langen Verzögerungen, geringer Skalierbarkeit und geringer Effizienz leiden, versuchen wir, Multicast-Feedback bestehend aus positiven (ACK) und negativen Bestätigungen (NACK) auf MAC-Layer im selben Zeitfenster zu bündeln. Die übrigen Empfänger können NACK-Frames senden, um das ACK des Leaders zu zerstören und Paketwiederholungen zu veranlassen. Basierend auf einem Feedback-Jamming Schema schlagen wir zwei MAC-Layer-Protokolle für den Fehlerschutz im Multicast vor: Das SEQ-getriebene Leader Based Protocol (SEQ-LBP) und das Hybrid Leader Based Protocol (HLBP). SEQ-LBP ist eines Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) Schema. HLBP kombiniert ARQ und paketbasierte Forward Error Correction (FEC). Wir evaluieren die Leistungsfähigkeit von ACK/NACK jamming, SEQ-LBP und HLBP durch Analysis, Simulationen in NS-2, sowie Experimenten in einer realen Testumgebung mit handelsüblichen WLAN-Karten. Die Testergebnisse bestätigen die Anwendbarkeit der Feedback-Jamming Schemata und die herausragende Leistungsfähigkeit der vorgestellten Protokolle SEQ-LBP und HLBP. SEQ-LBP ist durch seine kurze Verzögerung, seine Effektivität und seine Einfachheit für kleine Multicast-Gruppen nützlich, während HLBP auf Grund seiner hohen Effizienz und Skalierbarkeit im Bezug auf die Größe der Empfänger eher in großen Multicast-Gruppen anzuwenden ist

    Apport de la Qualité de l’Expérience dans l’optimisation de services multimédia : application à la diffusion de la vidéo et à la VoIP

    The emerging and fast growth of multimedia services have created new challenges for network service providers in order to guarantee the best user's Quality of Experience (QoE) in diverse networks with distinctive access technologies. Usually, various methods and techniques are used to predict the user satisfaction level by studying the combined impact of numerous factors. In this thesis, we consider two important multimedia services to evaluate the user perception, which are: video streaming service, and VoIP. This study investigates user's QoE that follows three directions: (1) methodologies for subjective QoE assessment of video services, (2) regulating user's QoE using video a rate adaptive algorithm, and (3) QoE-based power efficient resource allocation methods for Long Term Evaluation-Advanced (LTE-A) for VoIP. Initially, we describe two subjective methods to collect the dataset for assessing the user's QoE. The subjectively collected dataset is used to investigate the influence of different parameters (e.g. QoS, video types, user profile, etc.) on user satisfaction while using the video services. Later, we propose a client-based HTTP rate adaptive video streaming algorithm over TCP protocol to regulate the user's QoE. The proposed method considers three Quality of Service (QoS) parameters that govern the user perception, which are: Bandwidth, Buffer, and dropped Frame rate (BBF). The BBF method dynamically selects the suitable video quality according to network conditions and user's device properties. Lastly, we propose a QoE driven downlink scheduling method, i.e. QoE Power Escient Method (QEPEM) for LTE-A. It esciently allocates the radio resources, and optimizes the use of User Equipment (UE) power utilizing the Discontinuous Reception (DRX) method in LTE-AL'émergence et la croissance rapide des services multimédia dans les réseaux IP ont créé de nouveaux défis pour les fournisseurs de services réseau, qui, au-delà de la Qualité de Service (QoS) issue des paramètres techniques de leur réseau, doivent aussi garantir la meilleure qualité de perception utilisateur (Quality of Experience, QoE) dans des réseaux variés avec différentes technologies d'accès. Habituellement, différentes méthodes et techniques sont utilisées pour prédire le niveau de satisfaction de l'utilisateur, en analysant l'effet combiné de multiples facteurs. Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons à la commande du réseau en intégrant à la fois des aspects qualitatifs (perception du niveau de satisfaction de l'usager) et quantitatifs (mesure de paramètres réseau) dans l'objectif de développer des mécanismes capables, à la fois, de s'adapter à la variabilité des mesures collectées et d'améliorer la qualité de perception. Pour ce faire, nous avons étudié le cas de deux services multimédia populaires, qui sont : le streaming vidéo, et la voix sur IP (VoIP). Nous investiguons la QoE utilisateur de ces services selon trois aspects : (1) les méthodologies d'évaluation subjective de la QoE, dans le cadre d'un service vidéo, (2) les techniques d'adaptation de flux vidéo pour garantir un certain niveau de QoE, et (3) les méthodes d'allocation de ressource, tenant compte de la QoE tout en économisant l'énergie, dans le cadre d'un service de VoIP (LTE-A). Nous présentons d'abord deux méthodes pour récolter des jeux de données relatifs à la QoE. Nous utilisons ensuite ces jeux de données (issus des campagnes d'évaluation subjective que nous avons menées) pour comprendre l'influence de différents paramètres (réseau, terminal, profil utilisateur) sur la perception d'un utilisateur d'un service vidéo. Nous proposons ensuite un algorithme de streaming vidéo adaptatif, implémenté dans un client HTTP, et dont le but est d'assurer un certain niveau de QoE et le comparons à l'état de l'art. Notre algorithme tient compte de trois paramètres de QoS (bande passante, taille de mémoires tampons de réception et taux de pertes de paquets) et sélectionne dynamiquement la qualité vidéo appropriée en fonction des conditions du réseau et des propriétés du terminal de l'utilisateur. Enfin, nous proposons QEPEM (QoE Power Efficient Method), un algorithme d'ordonnancement basé sur la QoE, dans le cadre d'un réseau sans fil LTE, en nous intéressant à une allocation dynamique des ressources radio en tenant compte de la consommation énergétiqu
