Το 1ο, ( A proposed Model ‘1’ of OFDM based In-Place Wavelet Transform), το 2ο, A proposed Model ‘2’ based In-Place Wavelet Transform Algorithm and Phase Matrix (P.M) και το 3ο, A proposed Model ‘3’ of MC-CDMA Based on Multiwavelet Transform. Οι αποδόσεις τους συγκρίθηκαν με τα παραδοσιακά μοντέλα μονού χρήστη κάτω από διαφορετικά κανάλια (Κανάλι AWGN, επίπεδη διάλειψη και επιλεκτική διάλειψη).The demand for high data rate wireless multi-media applications has increased significantly in the past few years. The wireless user’s pressure towards faster communications, no matter whether mobile, nomadic, or fixed positioned, without extra cost is nowadays a reality. To fulfill these demands, a new scheme which combines wireless digital modulation and multiple accesses was proposed in the recent years, namely, Multicarrier-Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA). The Fourier based OFDM uses the complex exponential bases functions and it is replaced by wavelets in order to reduce the level of interference. It is found that the Haar-based wavelets are capable of reducing the ISI and ICI, which are caused by the loss in orthogonality between the carriers. Further performance gains can be made by looking at alternative orthogonal basis functions and finding a better transform rather than Fourier and wavelet transform. In this thesis, there are three proposed models [Model ‘1’ (OFDM based on In-Place Wavelet Transform, Model ‘2’ (MC-CDMA based on IP-WT and Phase Matrix) and Model ‘3’ (MC-CDMA based on Multiwavelet Transform)] were created and then comparison their performances with the traditional models for single user system were compared under different channel characteristics (AWGN channel, flat fading and selective fading). The conclusion of my study as follows, the models (1) was achieved much lower bit error rates than traditional models based FFT. Therefore these models can be considered as an alternative to the conventional MC-CDMA based FFT. The main advantage of using In-Place wavelet transform in the proposed models that it does not require an additional array at each sweep such as in ordered Fast Haar wavelet transform, which makes it simpler for implementation than FFT. The model (2) gave a new algorithm based on In-Place wavelet transform with first level processing multiple by PM was proposed. The model (3) gave much lower bit error than other two models in additional to traditional models

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2004.Includes bibliographical references (p. 395-404).(cont.) counterpart. Among intra-cell orthogonal schemes, we show that the most efficient broadcast signal is a linear superposition of many binary orthogonal waveforms. The information set is also binary. Each orthogonal waveform is generated by modulating a periodic stream of finite-length chip pulses with a receiver-specific signature code that is derived from a special class of binary antipodal, superimposed recursive orthogonal code sequences. With the imposition of practical pulse shapes for carrier modulation, we show that multi-carrier format using cosine functions has higher bandwidth efficiency than the single-carrier format, even in an ideal Gaussian channel model. Each pulse is shaped via a prototype baseband filter such that when the demodulated signal is detected through a baseband matched filter, the resulting output samples satisfy the Generalized Nyquist criterion. Specifically, we propose finite-length, time overlapping orthogonal pulse shapes that are g-Nyquist. They are derived from extended and modulated lapped transforms by proving the equivalence between Perfect Reconstruction and Generalized Nyquist criteria. Using binary data modulation format, we measure and analyze the accuracy of various Gaussian approximation methods for spread-spectrum modulated (SSM) signalling ...We study forward link performance of a multi-user cellular wireless network. In our proposed cellular broadcast model, the receiver population is partitioned into smaller mutually exclusive subsets called cells. In each cell an autonomous transmitter with average transmit power constraint communicates to all receivers in its cell by broadcasting. The broadcast signal is a multiplex of independent information from many remotely located sources. Each receiver extracts its desired information from the composite signal, which consists of a distorted version of the desired signal, interference from neighboring cells and additive white Gaussian noise. Waveform distortion is caused by time and frequency selective linear time-variant channel that exists between every transmitter-receiver pair. Under such system and design constraints, and a fixed bandwidth for the entire network, we show that the most efficient resource allocation policy for each transmitter based on information theoretic measures such as channel capacity, simultaneously achievable rate regions and sum-rate is superposition coding with successive interference cancellation. The optimal policy dominates over its sub-optimal alternatives at the boundaries of the capacity region. By taking into account practical constraints such as finite constellation sets, frequency translation via carrier modulation, pulse shaping and real-time signal processing and decoding of finite-length waveforms and fairness in rate distribution, we argue that sub-optimal orthogonal policies are preferred. For intra-cell multiplexing, all orthogonal schemes based on frequency, time and code division are equivalent. For inter-cell multiplexing, non-orthogonal code-division has a larger capacity than its orthogonalby Ceilidh Hoffmann.Ph.D

As different positioning applications have started to be a common part of our lives, positioning methods have to cope with increasing demands. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) can offer accurate location estimate outdoors, but achieving seamless large-scale indoor localization remains still a challenging topic. The requirements for simple and cost-effective indoor positioning system have led to the utilization of wireless systems already available, such as cellular networks and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). One common approach with the advantage of a large-scale standard-independent implementation is based on the Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements. This thesis addresses both GNSS and non-GNSS positioning algorithms and aims to offer a compact overview of the wireless localization issues, concentrating on some of the major challenges and solutions in GNSS and RSS-based positioning. The GNSS-related challenges addressed here refer to the channel modelling part for indoor GNSS and to the acquisition part in High Sensitivity (HS)-GNSS. The RSSrelated challenges addressed here refer to the data collection and calibration, channel effects such as path loss and shadowing, and three-dimensional indoor positioning estimation. This thesis presents a measurement-based analysis of indoor channel models for GNSS signals and of path loss and shadowing models for WLAN and cellular signals. Novel low-complexity acquisition algorithms are developed for HS-GNSS. In addition, a solution to transmitter topology evaluation and database reduction solutions for large-scale mobile-centric RSS-based positioning are proposed. This thesis also studies the effect of RSS offsets in the calibration phase and various floor estimators, and offers an extensive comparison of different RSS-based positioning algorithms

Study of the cyclostationarity properties of various signals of opportunity

    Get PDF
Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) offer precise position estimation and navigation services outdoor but they are rarely accessible in strong multipath environments, such as indoor environments. Fortunately, several Signals of Opportunity (SoO), (such as RFID, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, digital TV signals, etc.) are readily available in these environments, creating an opportunity for seamless positioning. Performance evolution of positioning can be achieved through contextual exploitation of SoO. The detection and identification of available SoO signals or of the signals which are most relevant to localization and the signal selection in an optimum way, according to designer defined optimality criteria, are important stages to enter such contextual awareness domain. Man-made modulated signals have certain properties which vary periodically in time and this time-varying periodical characteristics trigger what is known as cyclostationarity. Cyclostationarity analysis can be used, among others, as a tool for signal detection. Detected signals through cyclostationary features can be exploited as SoO. The main purpose of this thesis is to study and analyze the cyclostationarity properties of various SoO. An additional goal is to investigate whether such cyclostationarity properties can be used to detect, identify and distinguish the signals which are present in a certain frequency band. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the literature review part, the physical layer study of several signals is given, by emphasizing the potential of SoO in positioning. In the implementation part, the possibility of signals detection through cyclostationary features is investigated through MATLAB simulations. Cyclostationary properties obtained through FFT accumulation Method (FAM) and statistical performance of detection are studied in the presence of stationary additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Besides that, the performance in signal detection using cyclostationary-based detector is also compared to the performance with the energy-based detectors, used as benchmarks. The simulated result suggest that cyclostationary features can certainly detect the presence of signals in noise, but simple cases, such as one type of signal only and AWGN noise, are better addressed via traditional energy-based detection. However, cyclostationary features can exhibit advantages in other types of noises and in the presence of signal mixtures which in fact may fulfil one of the preliminary requirements of cognitive positioning
