    Hyperswitch communication network

    The Hyperswitch Communication Network (HCN) is a large scale parallel computer prototype being developed at JPL. Commercial versions of the HCN computer are planned. The HCN computer being designed is a message passing multiple instruction multiple data (MIMD) computer, and offers many advantages in price-performance ratio, reliability and availability, and manufacturing over traditional uniprocessors and bus based multiprocessors. The design of the HCN operating system is a uniquely flexible environment that combines both parallel processing and distributed processing. This programming paradigm can achieve a balance among the following competing factors: performance in processing and communications, user friendliness, and fault tolerance. The prototype is being designed to accommodate a maximum of 64 state of the art microprocessors. The HCN is classified as a distributed supercomputer. The HCN system is described, and the performance/cost analysis and other competing factors within the system design are reviewed

    Off-line computing for experimental high-energy physics

    The needs of experimental high-energy physics for large-scale computing and data handling are explained in terms of the complexity of individual collisions and the need for high statistics to study quantum mechanical processes. The prevalence of university-dominated collaborations adds a requirement for high-performance wide-area networks. The data handling and computational needs of the different types of large experiment, now running or under construction, are evaluated. Software for experimental high-energy physics is reviewed briefly with particular attention to the success of packages written within the discipline. It is argued that workstations and graphics are important in ensuring that analysis codes are correct, and the worldwide networks which support the involvement of remote physicists are described. Computing and data handling are reviewed showing how workstations and RISC processors are rising in importance but have not supplanted traditional mainframe processing. Examples of computing systems constructed within high-energy physics are examined and evaluated

    Dynamic Quay Crane Allocation

    We introduce simple rules for quay cranes to handle containers along a berth where vessels arrive continuously in time. We first analyze a model where workload is continuous. Our analysis shows that if the system is configured properly, it will always converge to a state with the maximum possible throughput regardless of external disruptions or changes in workload. Numerical simulations based on a discrete workload model suggest that, by following the same rules, the system can still converge to state with throughput that is very close to its upper bound

    A review is given of the design and development of some US and USSR aircraft. The emphasis is on the historical development of large aircraft-civil and military transports and bombers. Design trends are somewhat similar for the two countries and indications are that some fundamental characteristics are dictated more by ideological differences rather than technological differences. A brief description is given in a more or less chronological order of the major bomber aircraft, major civil and military transport aircraft, and the development of the air transport systems

    Designing a fuzzy scheduler for hard real-time systems

    In hard real-time systems, tasks have to be performed not only correctly, but also in a timely fashion. If timing constraints are not met, there might be severe consequences. Task scheduling is the most important problem in designing a hard real-time system, because the scheduling algorithm ensures that tasks meet their deadlines. However, the inherent nature of uncertainty in dynamic hard real-time systems increases the problems inherent in scheduling. In an effort to alleviate these problems, we have developed a fuzzy scheduler to facilitate searching for a feasible schedule. A set of fuzzy rules are proposed to guide the search. The situation we are trying to address is the performance of the system when no feasible solution can be found, and therefore, certain tasks will not be executed. We wish to limit the number of important tasks that are not scheduled

    Since the inception of Euro in 1999, a single currency and the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) have past more than ten years. By and large, stepping into EMU represents one of the key aspects of EU’s successful integration. For most of its short life, the European Union has been driven mainly by the goal of economic integration. From a limited experiment in economic cooperation during the early 1950s, boarded in the 1960s to become a custom union, wrestled during the 1970s with attempts to build common economic policies and exchange rate stability, focused on completing the single market during the late 1980s, to the Economic and Monetary union and a single currency at the present1, the European Union has followed a tortuous path. The paper starts with the effectiveness of EU’s monetary policy after the birth of Euro to explore the complex relationship between monetary policy and economic operation within the European Union
