A Novel Beamformed Control Channel Design for LTE with Full Dimension-MIMO
The Full Dimension-MIMO (FD-MIMO) technology is capable of achieving huge
improvements in network throughput with simultaneous connectivity of a large
number of mobile wireless devices, unmanned aerial vehicles, and the Internet
of Things (IoT). In FD-MIMO, with a large number of antennae at the base
station and the ability to perform beamforming, the capacity of the physical
downlink shared channel (PDSCH) has increased a lot. However, the current
specifications of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) does not allow
the base station to perform beamforming techniques for the physical downlink
control channel (PDCCH), and hence, PDCCH has neither the capacity nor the
coverage of PDSCH. Therefore, PDCCH capacity will still limit the performance
of a network as it dictates the number of users that can be scheduled at a
given time instant. In Release 11, 3GPP introduced enhanced PDCCH (EPDCCH) to
increase the PDCCH capacity at the cost of sacrificing the PDSCH resources. The
problem of enhancing the PDCCH capacity within the available control channel
resources has not been addressed yet in the literature. Hence, in this paper,
we propose a novel beamformed PDCCH (BF-PDCCH) design which is aligned to the
3GPP specifications and requires simple software changes at the base station.
We rely on the sounding reference signals transmitted in the uplink to decide
the best beam for a user and ingeniously schedule the users in PDCCH. We
perform system level simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed
design and show that the proposed BF-PDCCH achieves larger network throughput
when compared with the current state of art algorithms, PDCCH and EPDCCH
schemes

Enabling Technologies for Internet of Things: Licensed and Unlicensed Techniques
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm which is shaping the evolution of the future Internet. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current
Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. Such a vision is also becoming known under the name of Machine-to-Machine (M2M), where the absence of human interaction in the system dynamics is further emphasized.
A massive number of wireless devices will have the ability to connect to the Internat through the IoT framework. With the accelerating pace of marketing such framework, the new wireless communications standards are studying/proposing solutions to incorporate the services needed for the IoT. However, with an estimate of 30 billion connected devices, a lot of challenges are facing the current wireless technology.
In our research, we address a variety of technology candidates for enabling such a massive framework. Mainly, we focus on the nderlay cognitive radio networks as the unlicensed candidate for IoT. On the other hand, we look into the current efforts done by the standardization bodies to accommodate the requirements of the IoT into the current cellular networks.
Specifically, we survey the new features and the new user equipment
categories added to the physical layer of the LTE-A.
In particular, we study the performance of a dual-hop cognitive radio network sharing the spectrum of a primary network in an underlay fashion. In particular, the cognitive network consists of a source, a destination, and multiple nodes employed as amplify-and-forward
relays. To improve the spectral efficiency, all relays are allowed to instantaneously transmit to the destination over the same frequency band. We present the optimal power allocation that maximizes the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination while satisfying the interference constrains of the primary network. The optimal power allocation is obtained through an eigen-solution of a channel-dependent matrix, and is shown to transform the transmission over the non-orthogonal relays into parallel channels. Furthermore, while the secondary destination is equipped with multiple antennas, we propose an antenna selection scheme to select the antenna with the highest SNR. To this end, we propose a clustering scheme to subgroup the available relays and use antenna selection at the receiver to extract the same diversity order. We show that random clustering causes the system to lose some of the available degrees of freedom. We provide analytical expression of the outage probability of the system for the random clustering and the proposed maximum-SNR clustering scheme with antenna selection. In addition, we adapt our design to increase the energy-efficiency of the overall network without significant loss in the data rate.
In the second part of this thesis, we will look into the current efforts done by the standardization bodies to accommodate the equirements of the IoT into the current cellular networks. Specifically, we present the new features and the new user equipment categories added to the physical layer of the LTE-A. We study some of the challenges facing the LTE-A when dealing with Machine Type communications (MTC). Specifically, the MTC Physical Downlink control channel (MPDCCH) is among the newly introduced features in the LTE-A that carries the downlink control information (DCI) for MTC devices. Correctly decoding the PDCCH, mainly depends on the channel estimation used to compensate for the channel errors during transmission, and the choice of such technique will affect both the complexity and the performance of the user equipment. We propose and assess the performance of a simple channel estimation technique depends in essence on the Least Squares (LS) estimates of the pilots signal and linear interpolations for low-Doppler channels associated with the
MTC application
Design of static intercell interference coordination schemes for realistic lte-based cellular networks
Today, 3.5 and 4G systems including Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced
(LTE-A) support packet-based services and provide mobile broadband access for
bandwidth-hungry applications. In this context of fast evolution, new and challenging
technical issues must be e ectively addressed. The nal target is to achieve a
signi cant step forward toward the improvement of the Quality of Experience (QoE).
To that end, interference management has been recognized by the industry as a key
enabler for cellular technologies based on OFDMA. Indeed, with a low frequency
reuse factor, intercell interference (ICI) becomes a major concern since the Quality of
Service (QoS) is not uniformly delivered across the network, it remarkably depends on
user position. Hence, cell edge performance is an important issue in LTE and LTE-A.
Intercell Interference Coordination (ICIC) encompasses strategies whose goal
is to keep ICI at cell edges as low as possible. This alleviates the aforementioned
situation. For this reason, the novelties presented in this Ph.D. thesis include not
only developments of static ICIC mechanisms for data and control channels, but
also e orts towards further improvements of the energy e ciency perspective.
Based on a comprehensive review of the state of the art, a set of research
opportunities were identi ed. To be precise, the need for
exible performance
evaluation methods and optimization frameworks for static ICIC strategies. These
mechanisms are grouped in two families: the schemes that de ne constraints on the
frequency domain and the ones that propose adjustments on the power levels. Thus,
Soft- and Fractional Frequency Reuse (SFR and FFR, respectively) are identi ed as
the base of the vast majority of static ICIC proposals.
Consequently, during the rst part of this Ph.D. thesis, interesting insights into
the operation of SFR and FFR were identi ed beyond well-known facts. These
studies allow for the development of a novel statistical framework to evaluate the
performance of these schemes in realistic deployments. As a result of the analysis, the
poor performance of classic con gurations of SFR and FFR in real-world contexts
is shown, and hence, the need for optimization is established. In addition, the
importance of the interworking between static ICIC schemes and other network
functionalities such as CSI feedback has also been identi ed. Therefore, novel CSI
feedback schemes, suitable to operate in conjunction with SFR and FFR, have been
developed. These mechanisms exploit the resource allocation pattern of these static
ICIC techniques in order to improve the accuracy of the CSI feedback process. The second part is focused on the optimization of SFR and FFR. The use of
multiobjective techniques is investigated as a tool to achieve e ective network-speci c
optimization. The approach o ers interesting advantages. On the one hand, it allows
for simultaneous optimization of several con
icting criteria. On the other hand, the
multiobjective nature results in outputs composed of several high quality (Pareto
e cient) network con gurations, all of them featuring a near-optimal tradeo
between the performance criteria. Multiobjective evolutionary algorithms allow
employing complex mathematical structures without the need for relaxation, thus
capturing accurately the system behavior in terms of ICI. The multiobjective
optimization formulation of the problem aims at achieving e ective adjustment of
the operational parameters of SFR and FFR both at cell level and network-wide.
Moreover, the research was successfully extended to the control channels, both the
PDCCH and ePDCCH.
Finally, in an e ort to further improve the network energy e ciency (an aspect
always considered throughout the thesis), the framework of Cell Switch O (CSO),
having close connections with ICIC, is also introduced. By means of the proposed
method, signi cant improvements with respect to traditional approaches, baseline
con gurations, and previous proposals can be achieved. The gains are obtained in

acceso de banda ancha m ovil para aplicaciones que requieren elevadas tasas de
transmisi on. En este contexto de r apida evoluci on, aparecen nuevos retos t ecnicos
que deben ser resueltos e cientemente. El objetivo ultimo es conseguir un salto
cualitativo importante en la experiencia de usuario (QoE). Con tal n, un factor
clave que ha sido reconocido en las redes celulares basadas en Orthogonal Frequency-
Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) es la gesti on de interferencias. De hecho, la
utilizaci on de un factor de reuso bajo permite una elevada e ciencia espectral pero
a costa de una distribuci on de la calidad de servicio (QoS) que no es uniforme en la
red, depende de la posici on del usuario. Por lo tanto, el rendimiento en los l mites
de la celda se ve muy penalizado y es un problema importante a resolver en LTE
y LTE-A.
La coordinaci on de interferencias entre celdas (ICIC, del ingl es Intercell Interfe-
rence Coordination) engloba las estrategias cuyo objetivo es mantener la interferencia
intercelular (ICI) lo m as baja posible en los bordes de celda. Esto permite aliviar
la situaci on antes mencionada. La contribuci on presentada en esta tesis doctoral
incluye el dise~no de nuevos mecanismos de ICIC est atica para los canales de datos y
control, as como tambi en mejoras desde el punto de vista de e ciencia energ etica.
A partir de una revisi on completa del estado del arte, se identi caron una serie
de retos abiertos que requer an esfuerzos de investigaci on. En concreto, la necesidad
de m etodos de evaluaci on
exibles y marcos de optimizaci on de las estrategias de
ICIC est aticas. Estos mecanismos se agrupan en dos familias: los esquemas que
de nen restricciones sobre el dominio de la frecuencia y los que proponen ajustes
en los niveles de potencia. Es decir, la base de la gran mayor a de propuestas ICIC
est aticas son la reutilizaci on de frecuencias de tipo soft y fraccional (SFR y FFR,
respectivamente).
De este modo, durante la primera parte de esta tesis doctoral, se han estudiado
los aspectos m as importantes del funcionamiento de SFR y FFR, haciendo especial
enfasis en las conclusiones que van m as all a de las bien conocidas. Ello ha permitido
introducir un nuevo marco estad stico para evaluar el funcionamiento de estos
sistemas en condiciones de despliegue reales. Como resultado de estos an alisis, se
muestra el pobre desempe~no de SFR y FFR en despliegues reales cuando funcionan con sus con guraciones cl asicas y se establece la necesidad de optimizaci on. Tambi en
se pone de mani esto la importancia del funcionamiento conjunto entre esquemas
ICIC est aticos y otras funcionalidades de la red radio, tales como la informaci on que
env an los usuarios sobre el estado de su canal downlink (feedback del CSI, del ingl es
Channel State Information). De este modo, se han propuesto diferentes esquemas de
feedback apropiados para trabajar conjuntamente con SFR y FFR. Estos mecanismos
explotan el patr on de asignaci on de recursos que se utiliza en ICIC est atico para
mejorar la precisi on del proceso.
La segunda parte se centra en la optimizaci on de SFR y FFR. Se ha investigado el
uso de t ecnicas multiobjetivo como herramienta para lograr una optimizaci on e caz,
que es espec ca para cada red. El enfoque ofrece ventajas interesantes, por un lado, se
permite la optimizaci on simult anea de varios criterios contradictorios. Por otro lado,
la naturaleza multiobjetivo implica obtener como resultado con guraciones de red
de elevada calidad (Pareto e cientes), todas ellas con un equilibrio casi- optimo entre
las diferentes m etricas de rendimiento. Los algoritmos evolucionarios multiobjetivo
permiten la utilizaci on de estructuras matem aticas complejas sin necesidad de relajar
el problema, de este modo capturan adecuadamente su comportamiento en t erminos
de ICI. La formulaci on multiobjetivo consigue un ajuste efectivo de los par ametros
operacionales de SFR y FFR, tanto a nivel de celda como a nivel de red. Adem as,
la investigaci on se extiende con resultados satisfactorios a los canales de control,
PDCCH y ePDCCH.
Finalmente, en un esfuerzo por mejorar la e ciencia energ etica de la red (un
aspecto siempre considerado a lo largo de la tesis), se introduce en el an alisis global
el apagado inteligente de celdas, estrategia con estrechos v nculos con ICIC. A trav es
del m etodo propuesto, se obtienen mejoras signi cativas con respecto a los enfoques
tradicionales y propuestas previas. Las ganancias se obtienen en t erminos de consumo
energ etico, capacidad de la red, y rendimiento en el l mite de las celdas.Actualment els sistemes 3.5 i 4G tals com Long Term Evolution (LTE) i LTE-

Towards Massive Machine Type Communications in Ultra-Dense Cellular IoT Networks: Current Issues and Machine Learning-Assisted Solutions
The ever-increasing number of resource-constrained Machine-Type Communication
(MTC) devices is leading to the critical challenge of fulfilling diverse
communication requirements in dynamic and ultra-dense wireless environments.
Among different application scenarios that the upcoming 5G and beyond cellular
networks are expected to support, such as eMBB, mMTC and URLLC, mMTC brings the
unique technical challenge of supporting a huge number of MTC devices, which is
the main focus of this paper. The related challenges include QoS provisioning,
handling highly dynamic and sporadic MTC traffic, huge signalling overhead and
Radio Access Network (RAN) congestion. In this regard, this paper aims to
identify and analyze the involved technical issues, to review recent advances,
to highlight potential solutions and to propose new research directions. First,
starting with an overview of mMTC features and QoS provisioning issues, we
present the key enablers for mMTC in cellular networks. Along with the
highlights on the inefficiency of the legacy Random Access (RA) procedure in
the mMTC scenario, we then present the key features and channel access
mechanisms in the emerging cellular IoT standards, namely, LTE-M and NB-IoT.
Subsequently, we present a framework for the performance analysis of
transmission scheduling with the QoS support along with the issues involved in
short data packet transmission. Next, we provide a detailed overview of the
existing and emerging solutions towards addressing RAN congestion problem, and
then identify potential advantages, challenges and use cases for the
applications of emerging Machine Learning (ML) techniques in ultra-dense
cellular networks. Out of several ML techniques, we focus on the application of
low-complexity Q-learning approach in the mMTC scenarios. Finally, we discuss

Evaluating the effectiveness of Cooperative/Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) LTE feature in uplink and downlink transmissions
Shannon demonstrated that the channel capacity depends of the ratio of the received signal power to interference plus noise power (SINR). Inter-cell interference caused by neighbouring base stations (BSs) has been identified as one of the most severe problem towards the deployment of LTE technology as it can significantly deteriorate the performance of cellside User Equipment (UE). However, because of regulatory and radiation restrictions as well as operational costs, signal power may only be increased only up to a certain limit to reduce the interference. The other common radio propagation impairment is multipath. Multipath refers to a scenario where multiple copies of a signal propagate to a receiver using different paths. The paths can be created due to signal reflection, scattering and diffraction. As will be discussed later the effects of multipath contribute little to intercell interference because multipath characteristics such as delay spread are compensated for using cyclic prefixes. In this work, we will limit our scope to interference as it has been identified as the main cause of performance degradation for cell edge users due to the full frequency reuse technique used in LTE. To mitigate interference 3GPP devised options of increasing the capacity in LTEAdvanced Release 12 which include the use of spectral aggregation, employing Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) Antenna techniques, deploying more base stations and micro and femto cells, increasing the degree of sectorisation and Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP). We are primarily interested in evaluating performance improvements introduced when uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) coordinated/cooperative multipoint (CoMP) is enabled in LTE Advanced Release 12 as a way of reducing interference among sites. The CoMP option of reducing interference does not require deployment of new equipment compared to the other options mentioned above hence network deployment costs are minimal. CoMP in theory is known to reduce interference especially for cell edge users and therefore improves network fairness. With CoMP, multiple points coordinate with each other such that transmission of signals to and from other points do not incur serious interference or the interference can even be exploited as a meaningful signal. In September 2011 work on specifications for CoMP support was started in 3GPP LTEAdvanced as one of the core features in LTE-Advanced Release 11 to improve cell edge user throughput as well as the average network throughput. We set to do field measurements in the evaluation of the effectiveness of CoMP in LTE. 3GPP LTE Release 12 was used and cell edge users' performance was the focus. The network operates in 2330 - 2350 MHz band (Channel 40). From the field measurements, it was demonstrated that the CoMP (Scenario 2) feature indeed effective in improving service quality/user experience/fairness for cell edge users. solutions towards addressing RAN congestion problem, and then
identify potential advantages, challenges and use cases for the
applications of emerging Machine Learning (ML) techniques in
ultra-dense cellular networks. Out of several ML techniques, we
focus on the application of low-complexity Q-learning approach
in the mMTC scenario along with the recent advances towards
enhancing its learning performance and convergence. Finally,
we discuss some open research challenges and promising future
research directions

Os sistemas de comunicaci贸n sen f铆os de cuarta e quinta xeraci贸n (4G e 5G) utilizan unha capa f铆sica
(PHY) baseada en modulaci贸ns multiportadora para a transmisi贸n de datos cun gran ancho de banda.
Este tipo de modulaci贸ns proporcionan unha alta eficiencia espectral 谩 vez que permiten corrixir de
forma sinxela os efectos da canle radio.
Estes sistemas utilizan OFDMA como mecanismo para a repartici贸n dos recursos radio dispo帽ibles
entre os diferentes usuarios. Este repartimento real铆zase asignando un subconxunto de subportadoras a
cada usuario nun instante de tempo determinado. Isto aporta unha gran flexibilidade 贸 sistema que lle
permite adaptarse tanto 贸s requisitos de calidade de servizo dos usuarios como 贸 estado da canle radio.
A capa de acceso 贸 medio (MAC) destes sistemas enc谩rgase de configurar os diversos par谩metros
proporcionados pola capa f铆sica OFDMA, ademais de xestionar os diversos fluxos de informaci贸n de
cada usuario, transformando os paquetes de capas superiores en paquetes da capa f铆sica.
Neste traballo est煤dase o dese帽o e implementaci贸n das capas MAC e PHY de sistemas de
comunicaci贸n 4G ademais da s煤a aplicabilidade en sistemas de transporte ferroviarios.
Por unha parte, ab贸rdase o dese帽o e implementaci贸n en tempo real do est谩ndar WiMAX. Est煤danse
os mecanismos necesarios para establecer comunicaci贸ns bidireccionais entre unha estaci贸n base e
m煤ltiples dispositivos m贸biles. Ademais, est煤dase como realizar esta implementaci贸n nunha arquitectura
hardware baseada en DSPs e FPGAs, na que se implementan as capas MAC e PHY. Dado que esta
arquitectura ten uns recursos computacionais limitados, tam茅n se estudan as necesidades de cada m贸dulo
do sistema para poder garantir o funcionamento en tempo real do sistema completo.
Por outra parte, tam茅n se estuda a aplicabilidade dos sistemas 4G a sistemas de transporte p煤blicos.
Os sistemas de comunicaci贸ns e sinalizaci贸n son unha parte vital para os sistemas de transporte
ferroviario e metro. As comunicaci贸ns sen f铆os utilizadas por estes sistemas deben ser robustas e
proporcionar unha alta fiabilidade para permitir a supervisi贸n, control e seguridade do tr谩fico ferroviario.
Para levar a cabo esta avaliaci贸n de viabilidade real铆zanse simulaci贸ns de redes de comunicaci贸ns
LTE en contornos de transporte ferroviarios, comprobando o cumprimento dos requisitos de fiabilidade
e seguridade. Real铆zanse diferentes simulaci贸ns do sistema de comunicaci贸ns para poder ser avaliadas e
seleccionar a configuraci贸n e arquitectura do sistema m谩is axeitada en funci贸n do escenario considerado.
Tam茅n se efect煤an simulaci贸ns de redes baseadas en Wi-Fi, dado que 茅 a soluci贸n m谩is utilizada nos
metros, para confrontar os resultados cos obtidos para LTE.
Para que os resultados das simulaci贸ns sexan realistas d茅bense empregar modelos de propagaci贸n
radio axeitados. Nas simulaci贸ns util铆zanse tanto modelos deterministas como modelos baseados nos
resultados de campa帽as de medida realizadas nestes escenarios.
Nas simulaci贸ns empr茅ganse os diferentes fluxos de informaci贸n destes escenarios para comprobar
que se cumpren os requisitos de calidade de servicio (QoS). Por exemplo, os fluxos cr铆ticos para o control
ferroviario, como European Train Control System (ETCS) ou Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), necesitan unha alta fiabilidade e un retardo m铆nimo nas comunicaci贸ns para garantir o correcto

Los sistemas de comunicaci贸n inal谩mbricos de cuarta y quinta generaci贸n (4G y 5G) utilizan una capa
f铆sica (PHY) basada en modulaciones multiportadora para la transmisi贸n de datos con un gran ancho
de banda. Este tipo de modulaciones han demostrado tener una alta eficiencia espectral a la vez que
permiten corregir de forma sencilla los efectos del canal radio.
Estos sistemas utilizan OFDMA como mecanismo para el reparto de los recursos radio disponibles
entre los diferentes usuarios. Este reparto se realiza asignando un subconjunto de subportadoras a cada
usuario en un instante de tiempo determinado. Esto aporta una gran flexibilidad al sistema que le permite
adaptarse tanto a los requisitos de calidad de servicio de los usuarios como al estado del canal radio.
La capa de acceso al medio (MAC) de estos sistemas se encarga de configurar los diversos par谩metros
proporcionados por la capa f铆sica OFDMA, adem谩s de gestionar los diversos flujos de informaci贸n de
cada usuario, transformando los paquetes de capas superiores en paquetes de la capa f铆sica.
En este trabajo se estudia el dise帽o e implementaci贸n de las capas MAC y PHY de sistemas de
comunicaci贸n 4G adem谩s de su aplicabilidad en sistemas de transporte ferroviarios.
Por una parte, se aborda el dise帽o e implementaci贸n en tiempo real del est谩ndar WiMAX. Se
estudian los mecanismos necesarios para establecer comunicaciones bidireccionales entre una estaci贸n
base y m煤ltiples dispositivos m贸viles. Adem谩s, se estudia c贸mo realizar esta implementaci贸n en una
arquitectura hardware basada en DSPs y FPGAs, en la que se implementan las capas MAC y PHY. Dado
que esta arquitectura tiene unos recursos computacionales limitados, tambi茅n se estudian las necesidades
de cada m贸dulo del sistema para poder garantizar el funcionamiento en tiempo real del sistema completo.
Por otra parte, tambi茅n se estudia la aplicabilidad de los sistemas 4G a sistemas de transporte
p煤blicos. Los sistemas de comunicaciones y se帽alizaci贸n son una parte vital para los sistemas de
transporte ferroviario y metro. Las comunicaciones inal谩mbricas utilizadas por estos sistemas deben ser
robustas y proporcionar una alta fiabilidad para permitir la supervisi贸n, control y seguridad del tr谩fico
ferroviario.
Para llevar a cabo esta evaluaci贸n de viabilidad se realizan simulaciones de redes de comunicaciones
LTE en entornos de transporte ferroviarios, comprobando si se cumplen los requisitos de fiabilidad y
seguridad. Se realizan diferentes simulaciones del sistema de comunicaciones para poder ser evaluados y
seleccionar la configuraci贸n y arquitectura del sistema m谩s adecuada en funci贸n del escenario planteado.
Tambi茅n se efect煤an simulaciones de redes basadas en Wi-Fi, dado que es la soluci贸n m谩s utilizada en
los metros, para comparar los resultados con los obtenidos para LTE.
Para que los resultados de las simulaciones sean realistas se deben utilizar modelos de propagaci贸n
radio apropiados. En las simulaciones se utilizan tanto modelos deterministas como modelos basados en
los resultados de campa帽as de medida realizadas en estos escenarios.
En las simulaciones se utilizan los diferentes flujos de informaci贸n de estos escenarios para
comprobar que se cumplen sus requisitos de calidad de servicio. Por ejemplo, los flujos cr铆ticos para el control ferroviario, como European Train Control System (ETCS) o Communication-Based Train
Control (CBTC), necesitan una alta fiabilidad y un retardo bajo en las comunicaciones para garantizar el

The fourth and fifth generation wireless communication systems (4G and 5G) use a physical layer (PHY)
based on multicarrier modulations for data transmission using high bandwidth. This type of modulations
has shown to provide high spectral efficiency while allowing low complexity radio channel equalization.
These systems use OFDMA as a mechanism for distributing the available radio resources among
different users. This allocation is done by assigning a subset of subcarriers to each user in a given instant
of time. This provides great flexibility to the system that allows it to adapt to both the quality of service
requirements of users and the radio channel state.
The media access layer (MAC) of these systems is in charge of configuring the multiple OFDMA
PHY layer parameters, in addition to managing the data flows of each user, transforming the higher layer
packets into PHY layer packets.
This work studies the design and implementation of MAC and PHY layers of 4G communication
systems as well as their applicability in rail transport systems.
On the one hand, the design and implementation in real time of the WiMAX standard is addressed.
The required mechanisms to establish bidirectional communications between a base station and several
mobile devices are also evaluated. Moreover, a MAC layer and PHY layer implementation is
presented, using a hardware architecture based in DSPs and FPGAs. Since this architecture has limited
computational resources, the requirements of each processing block of the system are also studied in
order to guarantee the real time operation of the complete system.
On the other hand, the applicability of 4G systems to public transportation systems is also studied.
Communications and signaling systems are a vital part of rail and metro transport systems. The
wireless communications used by these systems must be robust and provide high reliability to enable
the supervision, control and safety of rail traffic.
To carry out this feasibility assessment, LTE communications network simulations are performed in
rail transport environments to verify that reliability and safety requirements are met. Several simulations
are carried out in order to evaluate the system performance and select the most appropriate system
configuration in each case. Simulations of Wi-Fi based networks are also carried out, since it is the
most used solution in subways, to compare the results with those obtained for LTE.
To perform the simulations correctly, appropriate radio propagation models must be used. Both
deterministic models and models based on the results of measurement campaigns in these scenarios are
used in the simulations.
The simulations use the different information flows present in the railway transportation systems to
verify that its quality of service requirements are met. For example, critical flows for railway control,
such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) or Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC),
require high reliability and low delay communications to ensure the proper functioning of the system
