Performance analysis of energy detector over generalised wireless channels in cognitive radio
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London. This thesis extensively analyses the performance of an energy detector which is
widely employed to perform spectrum sensing in cognitive radio over different generalised
channel models. In this analysis, both the average probability of detection and
the average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) are derived
using the probability density function of the received instantaneous signal to noise
ratio (SNR). The performance of energy detector over an ŋ --- µ fading, which is used
to model the Non-line-of-sight (NLoS) communication scenarios is provided. Then,
the behaviour of the energy detector over к --- µ shadowed fading channel, which is
a composite of generalized multipath/shadowing fading channel to model the lineof-
sight (LoS) communication medium is investigated. The analysis of the energy
detector over both ŋ --- µ and к --- µ shadowed fading channels are then extended to
include maximal ratio combining (MRC), square law combining (SLC) and square
law selection (SLS) with independent and non-identically (i:n:d) diversity branches.
To overcome the problem of mathematical intractability in analysing the energy
detector over i:n:d composite fading channels with MRC and selection combining
(SC), two different unified statistical properties models for the sum and the maximum
of mixture gamma (MG) variates are derived. The first model is limited by the value
of the shadowing severity index, which should be an integer number and has been
employed to study the performance of energy detector over composite α --- µ /gamma
fading channel. This channel is proposed to represent the non-linear prorogation
environment. On the other side, the second model is general and has been utilised to
analyse the behaviour of energy detector over composite ŋ --- µ /gamma fading channel.
Finally, a special filter-bank transform which is called slantlet packet transform
(SPT) is developed and used to estimate the uncertain noise power. Moreover, signal
denoising based on hybrid slantlet transform (HST) is employed to reduce the noise
impact on the performance of energy detector. The combined SPT-HST approach
improves the detection capability of energy detector with 97% and reduces the total
computational complexity by nearly 19% in comparison with previously implemented
work using filter-bank transforms. The aforementioned percentages are measured at
specific SNR, number of selected samples and levels of signal decompositionMartyrs Foundatio

Analysis of energy detection with diversity receivers over non-identically distributed κ − μ shadowed fading channels
The performance of energy detection (ED) over shadowed fading channel is analysed. The analysis is then extended to include the maximal ratio combining (MRC) and square law combining (SLC) schemes with non-identically distributed branches. Moreover, the analysis over extreme shadowed fading channel, that is utilised to model the wireless communications scenarios in enclosed areas, is also investigated. To this end, exact closed-form analytic expressions of the average area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) are derived
Solutions to Integrals Involving the Marcum Q-Function and Applications
Novel analytic solutions are derived for integrals that involve the
generalized Marcum Q-function, exponential functions and arbitrary powers.
Simple closed-form expressions are also derived for the specific cases of the
generic integrals. The offered expressions are both convenient and versatile,
which is particularly useful in applications relating to natural sciences and
engineering, including wireless cpmmunications and signal processing. To this
end, they are employed in the derivation of the channel capacity for fixed rate
and channel inversion in the case of correlated multipath fading and switched
diversity.Comment: 15 Pages, 2 Figure
GPU-SUPPORTED SIMULATION FOR ABEP AND QOS ANALYSIS OF A COMBINED MACRO DIVERSITY SYSTEM IN A GAMMA-SHADOWED K-µ FADING CHANNEL
In this paper we have analyzed macro-diversity (MD) system with one macro SC diversity (MD SC) receiver and two micro MRC (mD MRC) receivers over correlated Gamma-shadowed k-µ fading channel. The average bit error probability (ABEP) is calculated using the moment generating function (MGF) approach for BDPSK and BPSK modulations. Graphical representation of the results illustrates the effects of different parameters of the system on its performance as well as the improvements due to the benefits of a combined micro and macro diversity. The obtained analytical expressions are used for the GPU-enabled mobile network modeling, planning and simulation environment to determine the value of Quality of Service (QoS) parameter. Finally, linear optimization is proposed as an approach to improve the QoS parameter of the fading-affected system observed in this paper
Performance analysis of energy detection over hyper-Rayleigh fading channels
This study investigates the performance of energy detection (ED)-based spectrum sensing over two-wave with diffused power (TWDP) fading channels, which have been found to provide accurate characterisation for a variety of fading conditions. A closed-form expression for the average detection probability of ED-based spectrum sensing over TWDP fading channels is derived. This expression is then used to describe the behaviour of ED-based spectrum sensing for a variety of channels that include Rayleigh, Rician and hyper-Rayleigh fading models. Such fading scenarios present a reliable behavioural model of machine-to-machine wireless nodes operating in confined structures such as in-vehicular environments
Ergodic Capacity and Error Performance of Spatial Diversity UWOC Systems over Generalized Gamma Turbulence Channels
In this paper, we study the ergodic capacity (EC) and average bit error rate (BER) of spatial diversity underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC) over the generalized gamma (GG) fading channels using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) direct current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM). We derive closed-form expressions of the EC and BER for the spatial diversity UWOC with the equal gain combining (EGC) at receivers based on the approximation of the sum of independent identical distributed (i.i.d) GG random variables (RVs). Numerical results of EC and BER for QAM DCO-OFDM spatial diversity systems over GG fading channels are presented. The numerical results are shown to be closely matched by the Monte Carlo simulations, verifying the analysis. The study clearly shows the adverse effect of turbulence on the EC & BER and advantage of EGC to overcome the turbulence effect
