Optimal Precoders for Tracking the AoD and AoA of a mm-Wave Path
In millimeter-wave channels, most of the received energy is carried by a few
paths. Traditional precoders sweep the angle-of-departure (AoD) and
angle-of-arrival (AoA) space with directional precoders to identify directions
with largest power. Such precoders are heuristic and lead to sub-optimal
AoD/AoA estimation. We derive optimal precoders, minimizing the Cram\'{e}r-Rao
bound (CRB) of the AoD/AoA, assuming a fully digital architecture at the
transmitter and spatial filtering of a single path. The precoders are found by
solving a suitable convex optimization problem. We demonstrate that the
accuracy can be improved by at least a factor of two over traditional
precoders, and show that there is an optimal number of distinct precoders
beyond which the CRB does not improve.Comment: Resubmission to IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing. 12 pages and 9

Performance Analysis of Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Systems in Centralized and Distributed Schemes
This paper considers downlink multi-user millimeter-wave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in both centralized and distributed configurations, referred to as C-MIMO and D-MIMO, respectively. Assuming the fading channel is composite and comprised of both large-scale fading and small-scale fading, a hybrid precoding algorithm leveraging antenna array response vectors is applied into both the C-MIMO system with fully connected structure and the D-MIMO system with partially connected structure. First, the asymptotic spectral efficiency (SE) of an arbitrary user and the asymptotic average SE of the cell for the C-MIMO system are analyzed. Then, two radio access unit (RAU) selection algorithms are proposed for the D-MIMO system, based on minimal distance (D-based) and maximal signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) (SINR-based), respectively. For the D-MIMO system with circular layout and D-based RAU selection algorithm, the upper bounds on the asymptotic SE of an arbitrary user and the asymptotic average SE of the cell are also investigated. Finally, numerical results are provided to assess the analytical results and evaluate the effects of the numbers of total transmit antennas and users on system performance. It is shown that, from the perspective of the cell, the D-MIMO system with D-based scheme outperforms the C-MIMO system and achieves almost alike performance compared with the SINR-based solution while requiring less complexity.Peer reviewe
Uplink Analysis of Large MU-MIMO Systems With Space-Constrained Arrays in Ricean Fading
Closed-form approximations to the expected per-terminal
signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and ergodic sum spectral
efficiency of a large multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system are
presented. Our analysis assumes correlated Ricean fading with maximum ratio
combining on the uplink, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a uniform
linear array (ULA) with physical size restrictions. Unlike previous studies,
our model caters for the presence of unequal correlation matrices and unequal
Rice factors for each terminal. As the number of BS antennas grows without
bound, with a finite number of terminals, we derive the limiting expected
per-terminal SINR and ergodic sum spectral efficiency of the system. Our
findings suggest that with restrictions on the size of the ULA, the expected
SINR saturates with increasing operating signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and BS
antennas. Whilst unequal correlation matrices result in higher performance, the
presence of strong line-of-sight (LoS) has an opposite effect. Our analysis
accommodates changes in system dimensions, SNR, LoS levels, spatial correlation
levels and variations in fixed physical spacings of the BS array.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the proceedings of

Magneto-Electric Dipole Antenna Arrays
A planar magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna array is proposed and
demonstrated by both full-wave analysis and experiments. The proposed structure
leverages the infinite wavelength propagation characteristic of composite
right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines to form high-gain magnetic
radiators combined with radial conventional electric radiators, where the
overall structure is excited by a single differential feed. The traveling-wave
type nature of the proposed ME-dipole antenna enables the formation of
directive arrays with high-gain characteristics and scanning capability. Peak
gains of 10.84 dB and 5.73 dB are demonstrated for the electric dipole and
magnetic-dipole radiation components, respectively.Comment: 9 pages, 17 figure
Orbital Angular Momentum Waves: Generation, Detection and Emerging Applications
Orbital angular momentum (OAM) has aroused a widespread interest in many
fields, especially in telecommunications due to its potential for unleashing
new capacity in the severely congested spectrum of commercial communication
systems. Beams carrying OAM have a helical phase front and a field strength
with a singularity along the axial center, which can be used for information
transmission, imaging and particle manipulation. The number of orthogonal OAM
modes in a single beam is theoretically infinite and each mode is an element of
a complete orthogonal basis that can be employed for multiplexing different
signals, thus greatly improving the spectrum efficiency. In this paper, we
comprehensively summarize and compare the methods for generation and detection
of optical OAM, radio OAM and acoustic OAM. Then, we represent the applications
and technical challenges of OAM in communications, including free-space optical
communications, optical fiber communications, radio communications and acoustic
communications. To complete our survey, we also discuss the state of art of
particle manipulation and target imaging with OAM beams
Performance Analysis of Dual-User Macrodiversity MIMO Systems with Linear Receivers in Flat Rayleigh Fading
The performance of linear receivers in the presence of co-channel
interference in Rayleigh channels is a fundamental problem in wireless
communications. Performance evaluation for these systems is well-known for
receive arrays where the antennas are close enough to experience equal average
SNRs from a source. In contrast, almost no analytical results are available for
macrodiversity systems where both the sources and receive antennas are widely
separated. Here, receive antennas experience unequal average SNRs from a source
and a single receive antenna receives a different average SNR from each source.
Although this is an extremely difficult problem, progress is possible for the
two-user scenario. In this paper, we derive closed form results for the
probability density function (pdf) and cumulative distribution function (cdf)
of the output signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and signal to
noise ratio (SNR) of minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and zero forcing (ZF)
receivers in independent Rayleigh channels with arbitrary numbers of receive
antennas. The results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations and high SNR
approximations are also derived. The results enable further system analysis
such as the evaluation of outage probability, bit error rate (BER) and
capacity.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures; IEEE Transaction of Wireless Communication 2012
