Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
Quality of service optimization of multimedia traffic in mobile networks
Mobile communication systems have continued to evolve beyond the currently deployed Third
Generation (3G) systems with the main goal of providing higher capacity. Systems beyond 3G
are expected to cater for a wide variety of services such as speech, data, image transmission,
video, as well as multimedia services consisting of a combination of these. With the air interface
being the bottleneck in mobile networks, recent enhancing technologies such as the High Speed
Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), incorporate major changes to the radio access segment of
3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). HSDPA introduces new features
such as fast link adaptation mechanisms, fast packet scheduling, and physical layer retransmissions
in the base stations, necessitating buffering of data at the air interface which presents a
bottleneck to end-to-end communication. Hence, in order to provide end-to-end Quality of
Service (QoS) guarantees to multimedia services in wireless networks such as HSDPA, efficient
buffer management schemes are required at the air interface.
The main objective of this thesis is to propose and evaluate solutions that will address the
QoS optimization of multimedia traffic at the radio link interface of HSDPA systems. In the
thesis, a novel queuing system known as the Time-Space Priority (TSP) scheme is proposed for
multimedia traffic QoS control. TSP provides customized preferential treatment to the constituent
flows in the multimedia traffic to suit their diverse QoS requirements. With TSP queuing, the
real-time component of the multimedia traffic, being delay sensitive and loss tolerant, is given
transmission priority; while the non-real-time component, being loss sensitive and delay tolerant,
enjoys space priority. Hence, based on the TSP queuing paradigm, new buffer managementalgorithms are designed for joint QoS control of the diverse components in a multimedia session
of the same HSDPA user. In the thesis, a TSP based buffer management algorithm known as the
Enhanced Time Space Priority (E-TSP) is proposed for HSDPA. E-TSP incorporates flow
control mechanisms to mitigate congestion in the air interface buffer of a user with multimedia
session comprising real-time and non-real-time flows. Thus, E-TSP is designed to provide
efficient network and radio resource utilization to improve end-to-end multimedia traffic
performance. In order to allow real-time optimization of the QoS control between the real-time
and non-real-time flows of the HSDPA multimedia session, another TSP based buffer management
algorithm known as the Dynamic Time Space Priority (D-TSP) is proposed. D-TSP
incorporates dynamic priority switching between the real-time and non-real-time flows. D-TSP
is designed to allow optimum QoS trade-off between the flows whilst still guaranteeing the
stringent real-time component’s QoS requirements. The thesis presents results of extensive
performance studies undertaken via analytical modelling and dynamic network-level HSDPA
simulations demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed TSP queuing system and the TSP
based buffer management schemes
Joint buffer management and scheduling for input queued switches
Input queued (IQ) switches are highly scalable and they have been the focus of many studies from academia and industry. Many scheduling algorithms have been proposed for IQ switches. However, they do not consider the buffer space requirement inside an IQ switch that may render the scheduling algorithms inefficient in practical applications.
In this dissertation, the Queue Length Proportional (QLP) algorithm is proposed for IQ switches. QLP considers both the buffer management and the scheduling mechanism to obtain the optimal allocation region for both bandwidth and buffer space according to real traffic load. In addition, this dissertation introduces the Queue Proportional Fairness (QPF) criterion, which employs the cell loss ratio as the fairness metric. The research in this dissertation will show that the utilization of network resources will be improved significantly with QPF. Furthermore, to support diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of heterogeneous and bursty traffic, the Weighted Minmax algorithm (WMinmax) is proposed to efficiently and dynamically allocate network resources.
Lastly, to support traffic with multiple priorities and also to handle the decouple problem in practice, this dissertation introduces the multiple dimension scheduling algorithm which aims to find the optimal scheduling region in the multiple Euclidean space
Optimization and Performance Analysis of High Speed Mobile Access Networks
The end-to-end performance evaluation of high speed broadband mobile access networks is the main focus of this work. Novel transport network adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms are proposed, implemented, tested and validated using a comprehensive High speed packet Access (HSPA) system simulator. The simulation analysis confirms that the aforementioned algorithms are able to provide reliable and guaranteed services for both network operators and end users cost-effectively. Further, two novel analytical models one for congestion control and the other for the combined flow control and congestion control which are based on Markov chains are designed and developed to perform the aforementioned analysis efficiently compared to time consuming detailed system simulations. In addition, the effects of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) transport network (S1and X2 interfaces) on the end user performance are investigated and analysed by introducing a novel comprehensive MAC scheduling scheme and a novel transport service differentiation model
Self-Similarity in a multi-stage queueing ATM switch fabric
Recent studies of digital network traffic have shown that arrival processes in such an environment are more accurately modeled as a statistically self-similar process, rather than as a Poisson-based one. We present a simulation of a combination sharedoutput queueing ATM switch fabric, sourced by two models of self-similar input. The effect of self-similarity on the average queue length and cell loss probability for this multi-stage queue is examined for varying load, buffer size, and internal speedup. The results using two self-similar input models, Pareto-distributed interarrival times and a Poisson-Zeta ON-OFF model, are compared with each other and with results using Poisson interarrival times and an ON-OFF bursty traffic source with Ge ometrically distributed burst lengths. The results show that at a high utilization and at a high degree of self-similarity, switch performance improves slowly with increasing buffer size and speedup, as compared to the improvement using Poisson-based traffic
Analysis of generic discrete-time buffer models with irregular packet arrival patterns
De kwaliteit van de multimediadiensten die worden aangeboden over de huidige breedband-communicatienetwerken, wordt in hoge mate bepaald door de performantie van de buffers die zich in de diverse netwerkele-menten (zoals schakelknooppunten, routers, modems, toegangsmultiplexers, netwerkinter- faces, ...) bevinden. In dit proefschrift bestuderen we de performantie van een dergelijke buffer met behulp van een geschikt stochastisch discrete-tijd wachtlijnmodel, waarbij we het geval van meerdere uitgangskanalen en (niet noodzakelijk identieke) pakketbronnen beschouwen, en de pakkettransmissietijden in eerste instantie één slot bedragen. De grillige, of gecorreleerde, aard van een pakketstroom die door een bron wordt gegenereerd, wordt gekarakteriseerd aan de hand van een algemeen D-BMAP (discrete-batch Markovian arrival process), wat een generiek kader creëert voor het beschrijven van een superpositie van dergelijke informatiestromen. In een later stadium breiden we onze studie uit tot het geval van transmissietijden met een algemene verdeling, waarbij we ons beperken tot een buffer met één enkel uitgangskanaal.
De analyse van deze wachtlijnmodellen gebeurt hoofdzakelijk aan de hand van een particuliere wiskundig-analytische aanpak waarbij uitvoerig gebruik gemaakt wordt van probabiliteitsgenererende functies, die er toe leidt dat de diverse performantiematen (min of meer expliciet) kunnen worden uitgedrukt als functie van de systeemparameters. Dit resul-teert op zijn beurt in efficiënte en accurate berekeningsalgoritmen voor deze grootheden, die op relatief eenvoudige wijze geïmplementeerd kunnen worden
Packet Loss Rate Differentiation in slotted Optical Packet Switching OCDM/WDM
We propose a multi-class mechanism for Optical Code Division Multiplexing (OCDM), Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Optical Packet Switch (OPS) architecture capable of supporting Quality of Service (QoS) transmission. OCDM/WDM has been proposed as a competitive hybrid switching technology to support the next generation optical Internet. This paper addresses performance issues in the slotted OPS networks and proposed four differentiation schemes to support Quality of Service. In addition, we present a comparison between the proposed schemes as well as, a simulation scheduler design which can be suitable for the core switch node in OPS networks. Using software simulations the performance of our algorithm in terms of losing probability, the packet delay, and scalability is evaluated
A Slotted Ring Test Bed for the Study of ATM Network Congestion Management
This thesis addresses issues raised by the proposed Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network which will provide a flexible combination of integrated services traffic through its cell-based Asynchronbus Transport Mode (ATM). The introduction of a cell-based, connection-oriented, transport mode brings with it new technical challenges for network management. The routing of cells, their service at switching centres, and problems of cell congestion not encountered in the existing network, are some of the key issues.
The thesis describes the development of a hardware slotted ring testbed for the investigation of congestion management in an ATM network. The testbed is designed to incorporate a modified form of the ORWELL protocol to control media access. The media access protocol is analysed to give a model for maximum throughput and reset interval under various traffic distributions. The results from the models are compared with measurements carried out on the testbed, where cell arrival statistics are also varied. It is shown that the maximum throughput of the testbed is dependent on both traffic distribution and cell arrival statistics.
The testbed is used for investigations in a heterogeneous traffic environment where two classes of traffic with different cell arrival statistics and quality of service requirements are defined. The effect of prioritisation, media access protocol, traffic intensity, and traffic source statistics were investigated by determining an Admissible Load Region (ALR) for a network station. Conclusions drawn from this work suggest that there are many problems associated with the reliable definition of an ALR because of the number of variable parameters which could shift the ALR boundary. A suggested direction for further work is to explore bandwidth reservation and the concept of equivalent capacity of a connection, and how this can be linked to source control parameters
