Coded DS-CDMA Systems with Iterative Channel Estimation and no Pilot Symbols
In this paper, we describe direct-sequence code-division multiple-access
(DS-CDMA) systems with quadriphase-shift keying in which channel estimation,
coherent demodulation, and decoding are iteratively performed without the use
of any training or pilot symbols. An expectation-maximization
channel-estimation algorithm for the fading amplitude, phase, and the
interference power spectral density (PSD) due to the combined interference and
thermal noise is proposed for DS-CDMA systems with irregular repeat-accumulate
codes. After initial estimates of the fading amplitude, phase, and interference
PSD are obtained from the received symbols, subsequent values of these
parameters are iteratively updated by using the soft feedback from the channel
decoder. The updated estimates are combined with the received symbols and
iteratively passed to the decoder. The elimination of pilot symbols simplifies
the system design and allows either an enhanced information throughput, an
improved bit error rate, or greater spectral efficiency. The interference-PSD
estimation enables DS-CDMA systems to significantly suppress interference.Comment: To appear, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Blind adaptive constrained reduced-rank parameter estimation based on constant modulus design for CDMA interference suppression
This paper proposes a multistage decomposition for blind adaptive parameter estimation in the Krylov subspace with the code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion. Based on constrained optimization of the constant modulus cost function and utilizing the Lanczos algorithm and Arnoldi-like iterations, a multistage decomposition is developed for blind parameter estimation. A family of computationally efficient blind adaptive reduced-rank stochastic gradient (SG) and recursive least squares (RLS) type algorithms along with an automatic rank selection procedure are also devised and evaluated against existing methods. An analysis of the convergence properties of the method is carried out and convergence conditions for the reduced-rank adaptive algorithms are established. Simulation results consider the application of the proposed techniques to the suppression of multiaccess and intersymbol interference in DS-CDMA systems
An OFDM Signal Identification Method for Wireless Communications Systems
Distinction of OFDM signals from single carrier signals is highly important
for adaptive receiver algorithms and signal identification applications. OFDM
signals exhibit Gaussian characteristics in time domain and fourth order
cumulants of Gaussian distributed signals vanish in contrary to the cumulants
of other signals. Thus fourth order cumulants can be utilized for OFDM signal
identification. In this paper, first, formulations of the estimates of the
fourth order cumulants for OFDM signals are provided. Then it is shown these
estimates are affected significantly from the wireless channel impairments,
frequency offset, phase offset and sampling mismatch. To overcome these
problems, a general chi-square constant false alarm rate Gaussianity test which
employs estimates of cumulants and their covariances is adapted to the specific
case of wireless OFDM signals. Estimation of the covariance matrix of the
fourth order cumulants are greatly simplified peculiar to the OFDM signals. A
measurement setup is developed to analyze the performance of the identification
method and for comparison purposes. A parametric measurement analysis is
provided depending on modulation order, signal to noise ratio, number of
symbols, and degree of freedom of the underlying test. The proposed method
outperforms statistical tests which are based on fixed thresholds or empirical
values, while a priori information requirement and complexity of the proposed
method are lower than the coherent identification techniques
Reduced-rank adaptive least bit-error-rate detection in hybrid direct-sequence time-hopping ultrawide bandwidth systems
Design of high-efficiency low-complexity detection schemes for ultrawide bandwidth (UWB) systems is highly challenging. This contribution proposes a reduced-rank adaptive multiuser detection (MUD) scheme operated in least bit-errorrate (LBER) principles for the hybrid direct-sequence timehopping UWB (DS-TH UWB) systems. The principal component analysis (PCA)-assisted rank-reduction technique is employed to obtain a detection subspace, where the reduced-rank adaptive LBER-MUD is carried out. The reduced-rank adaptive LBERMUD is free from channel estimation and does not require the knowledge about the number of resolvable multipaths as well as the knowledge about the multipathsâ strength. In this contribution, the BER performance of the hybrid DS-TH UWB systems using the proposed detection scheme is investigated, when assuming communications over UWB channels modeled by the Saleh-Valenzuela (S-V) channel model. Our studies and performance results show that, given a reasonable rank of the detection subspace, the reduced-rank adaptive LBER-MUD is capable of efficiently mitigating the multiuser interference (MUI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI), and achieving the diversity gain promised by the UWB systems
