Joint estimation and localization in sensor networks
This paper addresses the problem of collaborative tracking of dynamic targets in wireless sensor networks. A novel distributed linear estimator, which is a version of a distributed Kalman filter, is derived. We prove that the filter is mean square consistent in the case of static target estimation. When large sensor networks are deployed, it is common that the sensors do not have good knowledge of their locations, which affects the target estimation procedure. Unlike most existing approaches for target tracking, we investigate the performance of our filter when the sensor poses need to be estimated by an auxiliary localization procedure. The sensors are localized via a distributed Jacobi algorithm from noisy relative measurements. We prove strong convergence guarantees for the localization method and in turn for the joint localization and target estimation approach. The performance of our algorithms is demonstrated in simulation on environmental monitoring and target tracking tasks
Applications and Routing Management of Wireless Sensor Networks
In this paper, we first describe some current and future applications of sensor networks. We present the conceptual framework of distributed routing strategies for wireless sensor networks. We show that under reasonable assumptions, this routing scheme guarantees ‘shortest path property’ which is quite desirable for sensor networks. We then discuss how this framework can be used to support distributed applications for sensor nodes acting as mobile devices. These schemes work well in low mobility conditions. We also discuss the performance of these heuristics
Medians and Beyond: New Aggregation Techniques for Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks offer the potential to span and monitor large
geographical areas inexpensively. Sensors, however, have significant power
constraint (battery life), making communication very expensive. Another
important issue in the context of sensor-based information systems is that
individual sensor readings are inherently unreliable. In order to address these
two aspects, sensor database systems like TinyDB and Cougar enable in-network
data aggregation to reduce the communication cost and improve reliability. The
existing data aggregation techniques, however, are limited to relatively simple
types of queries such as SUM, COUNT, AVG, and MIN/MAX. In this paper we propose
a data aggregation scheme that significantly extends the class of queries that
can be answered using sensor networks. These queries include (approximate)
quantiles, such as the median, the most frequent data values, such as the
consensus value, a histogram of the data distribution, as well as range
queries. In our scheme, each sensor aggregates the data it has received from
other sensors into a fixed (user specified) size message. We provide strict
theoretical guarantees on the approximation quality of the queries in terms of
the message size. We evaluate the performance of our aggregation scheme by
simulation and demonstrate its accuracy, scalability and low resource
utilization for highly variable input data sets
Push & Pull: autonomous deployment of mobile sensors for a complete coverage
Mobile sensor networks are important for several strategic applications
devoted to monitoring critical areas. In such hostile scenarios, sensors cannot
be deployed manually and are either sent from a safe location or dropped from
an aircraft. Mobile devices permit a dynamic deployment reconfiguration that
improves the coverage in terms of completeness and uniformity.
In this paper we propose a distributed algorithm for the autonomous
deployment of mobile sensors called Push&Pull. According to our proposal,
movement decisions are made by each sensor on the basis of locally available
information and do not require any prior knowledge of the operating conditions
or any manual tuning of key parameters.
We formally prove that, when a sufficient number of sensors are available,
our approach guarantees a complete and uniform coverage. Furthermore, we
demonstrate that the algorithm execution always terminates preventing movement
oscillations.
Numerous simulations show that our algorithm reaches a complete coverage
within reasonable time with moderate energy consumption, even when the target
area has irregular shapes. Performance comparisons between Push&Pull and one of
the most acknowledged algorithms show how the former one can efficiently reach
a more uniform and complete coverage under a wide range of working scenarios.Comment: Technical Report. This paper has been published on Wireless Networks,
