LDSO: Direct Sparse Odometry with Loop Closure
In this paper we present an extension of Direct Sparse Odometry (DSO) to a
monocular visual SLAM system with loop closure detection and pose-graph
optimization (LDSO). As a direct technique, DSO can utilize any image pixel
with sufficient intensity gradient, which makes it robust even in featureless
areas. LDSO retains this robustness, while at the same time ensuring
repeatability of some of these points by favoring corner features in the
tracking frontend. This repeatability allows to reliably detect loop closure
candidates with a conventional feature-based bag-of-words (BoW) approach. Loop
closure candidates are verified geometrically and Sim(3) relative pose
constraints are estimated by jointly minimizing 2D and 3D geometric error
terms. These constraints are fused with a co-visibility graph of relative poses
extracted from DSO's sliding window optimization. Our evaluation on publicly
available datasets demonstrates that the modified point selection strategy
retains the tracking accuracy and robustness, and the integrated pose-graph
optimization significantly reduces the accumulated rotation-, translation- and
scale-drift, resulting in an overall performance comparable to state-of-the-art
feature-based systems, even without global bundle adjustment
RadarSLAM: Radar based Large-Scale SLAM in All Weathers
Numerous Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms have been
presented in last decade using different sensor modalities. However, robust
SLAM in extreme weather conditions is still an open research problem. In this
paper, RadarSLAM, a full radar based graph SLAM system, is proposed for
reliable localization and mapping in large-scale environments. It is composed
of pose tracking, local mapping, loop closure detection and pose graph
optimization, enhanced by novel feature matching and probabilistic point cloud
generation on radar images. Extensive experiments are conducted on a public
radar dataset and several self-collected radar sequences, demonstrating the
state-of-the-art reliability and localization accuracy in various adverse
weather conditions, such as dark night, dense fog and heavy snowfall
Training a Convolutional Neural Network for Appearance-Invariant Place Recognition
Place recognition is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision,
and has become a key part in mobile robotics and autonomous driving
applications for performing loop closure in visual SLAM systems. Moreover, the
difficulty of recognizing a revisited location increases with appearance
changes caused, for instance, by weather or illumination variations, which
hinders the long-term application of such algorithms in real environments. In
this paper we present a convolutional neural network (CNN), trained for the
first time with the purpose of recognizing revisited locations under severe
appearance changes, which maps images to a low dimensional space where
Euclidean distances represent place dissimilarity. In order for the network to
learn the desired invariances, we train it with triplets of images selected
from datasets which present a challenging variability in visual appearance. The
triplets are selected in such way that two samples are from the same location
and the third one is taken from a different place. We validate our system
through extensive experimentation, where we demonstrate better performance than
state-of-art algorithms in a number of popular datasets
LocNet: Global localization in 3D point clouds for mobile vehicles
Global localization in 3D point clouds is a challenging problem of estimating
the pose of vehicles without any prior knowledge. In this paper, a solution to
this problem is presented by achieving place recognition and metric pose
estimation in the global prior map. Specifically, we present a semi-handcrafted
representation learning method for LiDAR point clouds using siamese LocNets,
which states the place recognition problem to a similarity modeling problem.
With the final learned representations by LocNet, a global localization
framework with range-only observations is proposed. To demonstrate the
performance and effectiveness of our global localization system, KITTI dataset
is employed for comparison with other algorithms, and also on our long-time
multi-session datasets for evaluation. The result shows that our system can
achieve high accuracy.Comment: 6 pages, IV 2018 accepte
