Analysis and design of three-stage concatenated color-shift keying

Visible Light Communication (VLC) relies on abundant unlicensed bandwidth resources. As an attractive high-data-rate modulation scheme designed for VLC, Color Shift Keying (CSK) assisted modulation is analysed. We commence our study from an uncoded M-CSK scheme relying on the joint Maximum Likelihood (ML) Hard-Detection (HD) of three colors, when communicating over an AWGN channel, where both empirical and analytical results are provided. We invoke EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts for designing a Maximum A-posteriori Probability (MAP) based Soft-Detection (SD) aided iterative receiver jointly detecting the three colors. Based on the EXIT characteristics of M-CSK, we design different signal labeling strategies for diverse color constellations and detection schemes, which are capable of achieving a substantially improved Bit Error Ratio (BER) performance. Thus, given a fixed transmission power, a CSK system using our proposed signal labeling is capable of increasing the reliable data transmission distance by about 30%

Security performance and protocol consideration in optical communication system with optical layer security enabled by optical coding techniques

With the fast development of communication systems, network security issues have more and more impact on daily life. It is essential to construct a high degree of optical layer security to resolve the security problem once and for all. Three different techniques which can provide optical layer security are introduced and compared. Optical chaos can be used for fast random number generation. Quantum cryptography is the most promising technique for key distribution. And the optical coding techniques can be deployed to encrypt the modulated signal in the optical layer. A mathematical equation has been derived from information theory to evaluate the information-theoretic security level of the wiretap channel in optical coding schemes. And the merits and limitation of two coherent optical coding schemes, temporal phase coding and spectral phase coding, have been analysed. The security scheme based on a reconfigurable optical coding device has been introduced, and the corresponding security protocol has been developed. By moving the encryption operation from the electronic layer to the optical layer, the modulated signals become opaque to the unauthorised users. Optical code distribution and authentication is the one of the major challenges for our proposed scheme. In our proposed protocol, both of the operations are covered and defined in detail. As a preliminary draft of the optical code security protocol, it could be a useful guidance for further research

Decoding high complexity is a major issue to design a decode and forward (DF) relay protocol. Thus, the establishment of low complexity decoding system would beneficial to assist decode and forward relay protocol. This paper reviews existing methods for the min-sum based LDPC decoding system as the low complexity decoding system. Reference lists of chosen articles were further reviewed for associated publications. This paper introduces comprehensive system model representing and describing the methods developed for LDPC based for DF relay protocol. It is consists of a number of components: (1) encoder and modulation at the source node, (2) demodulation, decoding, encoding and modulation at relay node, and (3) demodulation and decoding at the destination node. This paper also proposes a new taxonomy for min-sum based LDPC decoding techniques, highlights some of the most important components such as data used, result performances and profiles the Variable and Check Node (VCN) operation methods that have the potential to be used in DF relay protocol. Min-sum based LDPC decoding methods have the potential to provide an objective measure the best tradeoff between low complexities decoding process and the decoding error performance, and emerge as a cost-effective solution for practical application
