Parallel data compression
Data compression schemes remove data redundancy in communicated and stored data and increase the effective capacities of communication and storage devices. Parallel algorithms and implementations for textual data compression are surveyed. Related concepts from parallel computation and information theory are briefly discussed. Static and dynamic methods for codeword construction and transmission on various models of parallel computation are described. Included are parallel methods which boost system speed by coding data concurrently, and approaches which employ multiple compression techniques to improve compression ratios. Theoretical and empirical comparisons are reported and areas for future research are suggested
Design of testbed and emulation tools
The research summarized was concerned with the design of testbed and emulation tools suitable to assist in projecting, with reasonable accuracy, the expected performance of highly concurrent computing systems on large, complete applications. Such testbed and emulation tools are intended for the eventual use of those exploring new concurrent system architectures and organizations, either as users or as designers of such systems. While a range of alternatives was considered, a software based set of hierarchical tools was chosen to provide maximum flexibility, to ease in moving to new computers as technology improves and to take advantage of the inherent reliability and availability of commercially available computing systems
Probabilistic structural mechanics research for parallel processing computers
Aerospace structures and spacecraft are a complex assemblage of structural components that are subjected to a variety of complex, cyclic, and transient loading conditions. Significant modeling uncertainties are present in these structures, in addition to the inherent randomness of material properties and loads. To properly account for these uncertainties in evaluating and assessing the reliability of these components and structures, probabilistic structural mechanics (PSM) procedures must be used. Much research has focused on basic theory development and the development of approximate analytic solution methods in random vibrations and structural reliability. Practical application of PSM methods was hampered by their computationally intense nature. Solution of PSM problems requires repeated analyses of structures that are often large, and exhibit nonlinear and/or dynamic response behavior. These methods are all inherently parallel and ideally suited to implementation on parallel processing computers. New hardware architectures and innovative control software and solution methodologies are needed to make solution of large scale PSM problems practical
Solution of partial differential equations on vector and parallel computers
The present status of numerical methods for partial differential equations on vector and parallel computers was reviewed. The relevant aspects of these computers are discussed and a brief review of their development is included, with particular attention paid to those characteristics that influence algorithm selection. Both direct and iterative methods are given for elliptic equations as well as explicit and implicit methods for initial boundary value problems. The intent is to point out attractive methods as well as areas where this class of computer architecture cannot be fully utilized because of either hardware restrictions or the lack of adequate algorithms. Application areas utilizing these computers are briefly discussed
Highly parallel computer architecture for robotic computation
In a computer having a large number of single instruction multiple data (SIMD) processors, each of the SIMD processors has two sets of three individual processor elements controlled by a master control unit and interconnected among a plurality of register file units where data is stored. The register files input and output data in synchronism with a minor cycle clock under control of two slave control units controlling the register file units connected to respective ones of the two sets of processor elements. Depending upon which ones of the register file units are enabled to store or transmit data during a particular minor clock cycle, the processor elements within an SIMD processor are connected in rings or in pipeline arrays, and may exchange data with the internal bus or with neighboring SIMD processors through interface units controlled by respective ones of the two slave control units
Empowering parallel computing with field programmable gate arrays
After more than 30 years, reconïŹgurable computing has grown from a concept to a mature ïŹeld of science and technology. The cornerstone of this evolution is the ïŹeld programmable gate array, a building block enabling the conïŹguration of a custom hardware architecture. The departure from static von Neumannlike architectures opens the way to eliminate the instruction overhead and to optimize the execution speed and power consumption. FPGAs now live in a growing ecosystem of development tools, enabling software programmers to map algorithms directly onto hardware. Applications abound in many directions, including data centers, IoT, AI, image processing and space exploration. The increasing success of FPGAs is largely due to an improved toolchain with solid high-level synthesis support as well as a better integration with processor and memory systems. On the other hand, long compile times and complex design exploration remain areas for improvement. In this paper we address the evolution of FPGAs towards advanced multi-functional accelerators, discuss different programming models and their HLS language implementations, as well as high-performance tuning of FPGAs integrated into a heterogeneous platform. We pinpoint fallacies and pitfalls, and identify opportunities for language enhancements and architectural reïŹnements
Execution models for mapping programs onto distributed memory parallel computers
The problem of exploiting the parallelism available in a program to efficiently employ the resources of the target machine is addressed. The problem is discussed in the context of building a mapping compiler for a distributed memory parallel machine. The paper describes using execution models to drive the process of mapping a program in the most efficient way onto a particular machine. Through analysis of the execution models for several mapping techniques for one class of programs, we show that the selection of the best technique for a particular program instance can make a significant difference in performance. On the other hand, the results of benchmarks from an implementation of a mapping compiler show that our execution models are accurate enough to select the best mapping technique for a given program
Bit Fusion: Bit-Level Dynamically Composable Architecture for Accelerating Deep Neural Networks
Fully realizing the potential of acceleration for Deep Neural Networks (DNNs)
requires understanding and leveraging algorithmic properties. This paper builds
upon the algorithmic insight that bitwidth of operations in DNNs can be reduced
without compromising their classification accuracy. However, to prevent
accuracy loss, the bitwidth varies significantly across DNNs and it may even be
adjusted for each layer. Thus, a fixed-bitwidth accelerator would either offer
limited benefits to accommodate the worst-case bitwidth requirements, or lead
to a degradation in final accuracy. To alleviate these deficiencies, this work
introduces dynamic bit-level fusion/decomposition as a new dimension in the
design of DNN accelerators. We explore this dimension by designing Bit Fusion,
a bit-flexible accelerator, that constitutes an array of bit-level processing
elements that dynamically fuse to match the bitwidth of individual DNN layers.
This flexibility in the architecture enables minimizing the computation and the
communication at the finest granularity possible with no loss in accuracy. We
evaluate the benefits of BitFusion using eight real-world feed-forward and
recurrent DNNs. The proposed microarchitecture is implemented in Verilog and
synthesized in 45 nm technology. Using the synthesis results and cycle accurate
simulation, we compare the benefits of Bit Fusion to two state-of-the-art DNN
accelerators, Eyeriss and Stripes. In the same area, frequency, and process
technology, BitFusion offers 3.9x speedup and 5.1x energy savings over Eyeriss.
Compared to Stripes, BitFusion provides 2.6x speedup and 3.9x energy reduction
at 45 nm node when BitFusion area and frequency are set to those of Stripes.
Scaling to GPU technology node of 16 nm, BitFusion almost matches the
performance of a 250-Watt Titan Xp, which uses 8-bit vector instructions, while
BitFusion merely consumes 895 milliwatts of power
Reducing branch delay to zero in pipelined processors
A mechanism to reduce the cost of branches in pipelined processors is described and evaluated. It is based on the use of multiple prefetch, early computation of the target address, delayed branch, and parallel execution of branches. The implementation of this mechanism using a branch target instruction memory is described. An analytical model of the performance of this implementation makes it possible to measure the efficiency of the mechanism with a very low computational cost. The model is used to determine the size of cache lines that maximizes the processor performance, to compare the performance of the mechanism with that of other schemes, and to analyze the performance of the mechanism with two alternative cache organizations.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
