    Cooperative Human-Centric Sensing Connectivity

    Human-centric sensing (HCS) is a new concept relevant to Internet of Things (IoT). HCS connectivity, referred to as “smart connectivity,” enables applications that are highly personalized and often time-critical. In a typical HCS scenario, there may be many hundreds of sensor stream connections, centered around the human, who would be the determining factor for the number, the purpose, the direction, and the frequency of the sensor streams. This chapter examines the concepts of HCS communications, outlines the challenges, and defines a roadmap for solutions for realizing HCS networks. This chapter is organized as follows. Section 1 introduces the concept of cooperation in information and communications technologies (ICT), and in the context of IoT. Section 2 discusses cooperation in the context of the personal and extra-personal user space and identifies the remaining open challenges and requirements for realizing the benefits of this approach to enabling more resources and services in a hyper-connected society. Section 3 defines a roadmap toward realizing simple, efficient, and trustable systems based on advanced technologies combining security, cloud, and IoT/big data technologies and outlines the challenges related to this vision.     Wireless sensor system for infrastructure health monitoring

    In this thesis, radio frequency identification (RFID)-based wireless sensor system for infrastructure health monitoring (IHM) is designed and developed. It includes mountable semi-passive tag antenna integrated sensors capable of measuring critical responses of infrastructure such as dynamic acceleration and strain. Furthermore, the system is capable of measuring structural displacement. One of the most important parts of this system is the relatively small, tunable, construction material mountable RFID tag antenna. The tag antenna is electronically integrated with the sensors. Leading to the process of developing tag antenna integrated sensors having satisfactory wireless performance (sensitivity and read range) when mounted on concrete and metal structural members, the electromagnetic performance of the tag antenna is analyzed and optimized using both numerical and experimental procedures. Subsequently, it is shown that both the simulation and the experimental measurement results are in good agreement. The semi-passive RFID-based system is implemented in a wireless IHM system with multiple sensor points to measure dynamic acceleration and strain. The developed system can determine the natural frequencies of infrastructure and identify any state changes of infrastructure by measuring natural frequency shifts. Enhancement of the spectral bandwidth of the system has been performed under the constraints of the RFID hardware. The influence of the orientation and shape of the structural members on wireless power flow in the vicinity of those members is also investigated with the RFID reader-tag antenna system in both simulation and experiments. The antenna system simulations with a full-scale structural member have shown that both the orientation and the shape of the structural member influence the wireless power flow towards and in the vicinity of the member, respectively. The measurement results of the conducted laboratory experiments using the RFID antenna system in passive mode have shown good agreement with simulation results. Furthermore, the system’s ability to measure structural displacement is also investigated by conducting phase angle of arrival measurements. It is shown that the system in its passive mode is capable of measuring small structural displacements within a short wireless distance. The benchmarking of the developed system with independent, commercial, wired and wireless measurement systems has confirmed the ability of the RFID-based system to measure dynamic acceleration and strain. Furthermore, it has confirmed the system’s ability to determine the natural frequency of an infrastructure accurately. Therefore, the developed system with wireless sensors that do not consume battery power in data transmission and with the capability of dynamic response measurement is highly applicable in IHM

    Dense and long-term monitoring of Earth surface processes with passive RFID -- a review

    Billions of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) passive tags are produced yearly to identify goods remotely. New research and business applications are continuously arising, including recently localization and sensing to monitor earth surface processes. Indeed, passive tags can cost 10 to 100 times less than wireless sensors networks and require little maintenance, facilitating years-long monitoring with ten's to thousands of tags. This study reviews the existing and potential applications of RFID in geosciences. The most mature application today is the study of coarse sediment transport in rivers or coastal environments, using tags placed into pebbles. More recently, tag localization was used to monitor landslide displacement, with a centimetric accuracy. Sensing tags were used to detect a displacement threshold on unstable rocks, to monitor the soil moisture or temperature, and to monitor the snowpack temperature and snow water equivalent. RFID sensors, available today, could monitor other parameters, such as the vibration of structures, the tilt of unstable boulders, the strain of a material, or the salinity of water. Key challenges for using RFID monitoring more broadly in geosciences include the use of ground and aerial vehicles to collect data or localize tags, the increase in reading range and duration, the ability to use tags placed under ground, snow, water or vegetation, and the optimization of economical and environmental cost. As a pattern, passive RFID could fill a gap between wireless sensor networks and manual measurements, to collect data efficiently over large areas, during several years, at high spatial density and moderate cost.Comment: Invited paper for Earth Science Reviews. 50 pages without references. 31 figures. 8 table

    Vehicular Networks and Outdoor Pedestrian Localization

    This thesis focuses on vehicular networks and outdoor pedestrian localization. In particular, it targets secure positioning in vehicular networks and pedestrian localization for safety services in outdoor environments. The former research topic must cope with three major challenges, concerning users’ privacy, computational costs of security and the system trust on user correctness. This thesis addresses those issues by proposing a new lightweight privacy-preserving framework for continuous tracking of vehicles. The proposed solution is evaluated in both dense and sparse vehicular settings through simulation and experiments in real-world testbeds. In addition, this thesis explores the benefit given by the use of low frequency bands for the transmission of control messages in vehicular networks. The latter topic is motivated by a significant number of traffic accidents with pedestrians distracted by their smartphones. This thesis proposes two different localization solutions specifically for pedestrian safety: a GPS-based approach and a shoe-mounted inertial sensor method. The GPS-based solution is more suitable for rural and suburban areas while it is not applicable in dense urban environments, due to large positioning errors. Instead the inertial sensor approach overcomes the limitations of previous technique in urban environments. Indeed, by exploiting accelerometer data, this architecture is able to precisely detect the transitions from safe to potentially unsafe walking locations without the need of any absolute positioning systems

    Digital Beamforming Techniques for Passive UHF RFID Tag Localization

    Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is on the way to substitute traditional bar codes in many fields of application. Especially the availability of passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID transponders (or tags) in the frequency band between 860 MHz and 960 MHz has fostered the global application in supply chain management. However, the full potential of these systems will only be exploited if the identification of objects is complemented by accurate and robust localization. Passive UHF RFID tags are cost-effective, very small, extremely lightweight, maintenancefree, rugged and can be produced as adhesive labels that can be attached to almost any object. Worldwide standards and frequency regulations have been established and a wide infrastructure of identification systems is operated today. However, the passive nature of the technology requires a simple communication protocol which results in two major limitations with respect to its use for localization purposes: the small signal bandwidth and the small allocated frequency bandwidth. In the presence of multipath reflections, these limitations reduce the achievable localization accuracy and reliability. Thus, new methods have to be found to realize passive UHF RFID localization systems which provide sufficient performance in typical multipath situations. In this thesis, an enhanced transmission channel model for passive UHF RFID localization systems has been proposed which allows an accurate estimation of the channel behaviour to multipath. It has been used to design a novel simulation environment and to identify three solutions to minimize multipath interference: a) by varying the channel interface parameters, b) by applying diversity techniques, c) by installation of UHF absorbers. Based on the enhanced channel model, a new method for tag readability prediction with high reliability has been introduced. Furthermore, a novel way to rate the magnitude of multipath interference has been proposed. A digital receiver beamforming localization method has been presented which uses the Root MUSIC algorithm for angulation of a target tag and multipath reducing techniques for an optimum localization performance. A new multiangulation algorithm has been proposed to enable the application of diversity techniques. A novel transmitter beamforming localization approach has been presented which exploits the precisely defined response threshold of passive tags in order to achieve high robustness against multipath. The basic technique has been improved significantly with respect to angular accuracy and processing times. Novel experimental testbeds for receiver and transmitter beamforming have been designed, built and used for verification of the localization performance in real-world measurements. All the improvements achieved contribute to an enhancement of the accuracy and especially the robustness of passive UHF RFID localization systems in multipath environments which is the main focus of this researc
