A novel method for subjective picture quality assessment and further studies of HDTV formats
This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. Copyright @ IEEE 2008.This paper proposes a novel method for the assessment of picture quality, called triple stimulus continuous evaluation scale (TSCES), to allow the direct comparison of different HDTV formats. The method uses an upper picture quality anchor and a lower picture quality anchor with defined impairments. The HDTV format under test is evaluated in a subjective comparison with the upper and lower anchors. The method utilizes three displays in a particular vertical arrangement. In an initial series of tests with the novel method, the HDTV formats 1080p/50,1080i/25, and 720p/50 were compared at various bit-rates and with seven different content types on three identical 1920 times 1080 pixel displays. It was found that the new method provided stable and consistent results. The method was tested with 1080p/50,1080i/25, and 720p/50 HDTV images that had been coded with H.264/AVC High profile. The result of the assessment was that the progressive HDTV formats found higher appreciation by the assessors than the interlaced HDTV format. A system chain proposal is given for future media production and delivery to take advantage of this outcome. Recommendations for future research conclude the paper
A Novel Rate Control Algorithm for Onboard Predictive Coding of Multispectral and Hyperspectral Images
Predictive coding is attractive for compression onboard of spacecrafts thanks
to its low computational complexity, modest memory requirements and the ability
to accurately control quality on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Traditionally,
predictive compression focused on the lossless and near-lossless modes of
operation where the maximum error can be bounded but the rate of the compressed
image is variable. Rate control is considered a challenging problem for
predictive encoders due to the dependencies between quantization and prediction
in the feedback loop, and the lack of a signal representation that packs the
signal's energy into few coefficients. In this paper, we show that it is
possible to design a rate control scheme intended for onboard implementation.
In particular, we propose a general framework to select quantizers in each
spatial and spectral region of an image so as to achieve the desired target
rate while minimizing distortion. The rate control algorithm allows to achieve
lossy, near-lossless compression, and any in-between type of compression, e.g.,
lossy compression with a near-lossless constraint. While this framework is
independent of the specific predictor used, in order to show its performance,
in this paper we tailor it to the predictor adopted by the CCSDS-123 lossless
compression standard, obtaining an extension that allows to perform lossless,
near-lossless and lossy compression in a single package. We show that the rate
controller has excellent performance in terms of accuracy in the output rate,
rate-distortion characteristics and is extremely competitive with respect to
state-of-the-art transform coding
Efficient Video Authentication for H.264/AVC
This paper proposed a novel and efficient scheme to authenticate the H.264/AVC video. The scheme makes an accurate usage of the tree-structured motion compensation, motion estimation and Lagrangian optimization of the standard. Authentication information is embedded strictly based on the best mode decision strategy in the sense that if undergone any spatial and temporal attacks, the scheme can detect the tampering by the sensitive mode change. And the experimental results prove the effectiveness the algorithm against many transcoding and signal processing attacks. 1
A Subband Coding Method for HDTV
This paper introduces a new HDTV coder based on motion compensation, subband coding, and high order conditional entropy coding. The proposed coder exploits the temporal and spatial statistical dependencies inherent in the HDTV signal by using intra- and inter-subband conditioning for coding both the motion coordinates and the residual signal. The new framework provides an easy way to control the system complexity and performance, and inherently supports multiresolution transmission. Experimental results show that the coder outperforms MPEG-2, while still maintaining relatively low complexity
Rate-Distortion Modeling for Bit Rate Constrained Point Cloud Compression
As being one of the main representation formats of 3D real world and
well-suited for virtual reality and augmented reality applications, point
clouds have gained a lot of popularity. In order to reduce the huge amount of
data, a considerable amount of research on point cloud compression has been
done. However, given a target bit rate, how to properly choose the color and
geometry quantization parameters for compressing point clouds is still an open
issue. In this paper, we propose a rate-distortion model based quantization
parameter selection scheme for bit rate constrained point cloud compression.
Firstly, to overcome the measurement uncertainty in evaluating the distortion
of the point clouds, we propose a unified model to combine the geometry
distortion and color distortion. In this model, we take into account the
correlation between geometry and color variables of point clouds and derive a
dimensionless quantity to represent the overall quality degradation. Then, we
derive the relationships of overall distortion and bit rate with the
quantization parameters. Finally, we formulate the bit rate constrained point
cloud compression as a constrained minimization problem using the derived
polynomial models and deduce the solution via an iterative numerical method.
Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve optimal
decoded point cloud quality at various target bit rates, and substantially
outperform the video-rate-distortion model based point cloud compression
scheme.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video

Motion Scalability for Video Coding with Flexible Spatio-Temporal Decompositions
PhDThe research presented in this thesis aims to extend the scalability range of the
wavelet-based video coding systems in order to achieve fully scalable coding with a
wide range of available decoding points. Since the temporal redundancy regularly
comprises the main portion of the global video sequence redundancy, the techniques
that can be generally termed motion decorrelation techniques have a central role in
the overall compression performance. For this reason the scalable motion modelling
and coding are of utmost importance, and specifically, in this thesis possible
solutions are identified and analysed.
The main contributions of the presented research are grouped into two
interrelated and complementary topics. Firstly a flexible motion model with rateoptimised
estimation technique is introduced. The proposed motion model is based
on tree structures and allows high adaptability needed for layered motion coding. The
flexible structure for motion compensation allows for optimisation at different stages
of the adaptive spatio-temporal decomposition, which is crucial for scalable coding
that targets decoding on different resolutions. By utilising an adaptive choice of
wavelet filterbank, the model enables high compression based on efficient mode
selection. Secondly, solutions for scalable motion modelling and coding are
developed. These solutions are based on precision limiting of motion vectors and
creation of a layered motion structure that describes hierarchically coded motion.
The solution based on precision limiting relies on layered bit-plane coding of motion
vector values. The second solution builds on recently established techniques that
impose scalability on a motion structure. The new approach is based on two major
improvements: the evaluation of distortion in temporal Subbands and motion search
in temporal subbands that finds the optimal motion vectors for layered motion
structure.
Exhaustive tests on the rate-distortion performance in demanding scalable video
coding scenarios show benefits of application of both developed flexible motion
model and various solutions for scalable motion coding
