Economic-based Distributed Resource Management and Scheduling for Grid Computing
Computational Grids, emerging as an infrastructure for next generation
computing, enable the sharing, selection, and aggregation of geographically
distributed resources for solving large-scale problems in science, engineering,
and commerce. As the resources in the Grid are heterogeneous and geographically
distributed with varying availability and a variety of usage and cost policies
for diverse users at different times and, priorities as well as goals that vary
with time. The management of resources and application scheduling in such a
large and distributed environment is a complex task. This thesis proposes a
distributed computational economy as an effective metaphor for the management
of resources and application scheduling. It proposes an architectural framework
that supports resource trading and quality of services based scheduling. It
enables the regulation of supply and demand for resources and provides an
incentive for resource owners for participating in the Grid and motives the
users to trade-off between the deadline, budget, and the required level of
quality of service. The thesis demonstrates the capability of economic-based
systems for peer-to-peer distributed computing by developing users'
quality-of-service requirements driven scheduling strategies and algorithms. It
demonstrates their effectiveness by performing scheduling experiments on the

With the advent of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs), engineers and
designers of games came across with many questions that needed to be answered such
as, for example, "how to allow a large amount of clients to play simultaneously on the
same server?", "how to guarantee a good quality of service (QoS) to a great number
of clients?", "how many resources will be necessary?", "how to optimize these resources
to the maximum?". A possible answer to these questions relies on the usage of grid
computing.
Taking into account the parallel and distributed nature of grid computing, we can say
that grid computing allows for more scalability in terms of a growing number of players,
guarantees shorter communication time between clients and servers, and allows for a
better resource management and usage (e.g., memory, CPU, core balancing usage, etc.)
than the traditional serial computing model.
However, the main focus of this thesis is not about grid computing. Instead, this
thesis describes the re-engineering process of an existing multiplayer computer game,
called Jake2, by transforming it into a MMOG, which is then put to run on a grid

Personal mobile grids with a honeybee inspired resource scheduler
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The overall aim of the thesis has been to introduce Personal Mobile Grids (PMGrids)
as a novel paradigm in grid computing that scales grid infrastructures to mobile devices and extends grid entities to individual personal users. In this thesis, architectural designs as well as simulation models for PM-Grids are developed.
The core of any grid system is its resource scheduler. However, virtually all current conventional grid schedulers do not address the non-clairvoyant scheduling problem, where job information is not available before the end of execution. Therefore, this thesis proposes a honeybee inspired resource scheduling heuristic for PM-Grids (HoPe) incorporating a radical approach to grid resource scheduling to tackle this problem. A detailed design and implementation of HoPe with a decentralised self-management and adaptive policy are initiated.
Among the other main contributions are a comprehensive taxonomy of grid systems as well as a detailed analysis of the honeybee colony and its nectar acquisition process (NAP), from the resource scheduling perspective, which have not been presented in any previous work, to the best of our knowledge.
PM-Grid designs and HoPe implementation were evaluated thoroughly through a strictly controlled empirical evaluation framework with a well-established heuristic in high throughput computing, the opportunistic scheduling heuristic (OSH), as a benchmark algorithm. Comparisons with optimal values and worst bounds are conducted to gain a clear insight into HoPe behaviour, in terms of stability, throughput, turnaround time and speedup, under different running conditions of number of jobs and grid scales.
Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of HoPe performance where it
has successfully maintained optimum stability and throughput in more than 95%
of the experiments, with HoPe achieving three times better than the OSH under
extremely heavy loads. Regarding the turnaround time and speedup, HoPe has
effectively achieved less than 50% of the turnaround time incurred by the OSH, while doubling its speedup in more than 60% of the experiments.
These results indicate the potential of both PM-Grids and HoPe in realising futuristic grid visions. Therefore considering the deployment of PM-Grids in real life scenarios and the utilisation of HoPe in other parallel processing and high throughput computing systems are recommended

MapReduce based RDF assisted distributed SVM for high throughput spam filtering

Billions of legitimate emails are sent on a daily basis. The widely established underlying infrastructure, its widespread availability as well as its ease of use have all acted as catalysts to such pervasive proliferation. Unfortunately, the same can be alleged about unsolicited bulk email, or rather spam. Various methods, as well as enabling architectures are available to try to mitigate spam permeation. In this respect, this dissertation compliments existing survey work in this area by contributing an extensive literature review of traditional and emerging spam filtering approaches. Techniques, approaches and architectures employed for spam filtering are appraised, critically assessing respective strengths and weaknesses.
Velocity, volume and variety are key characteristics of the spam challenge. MapReduce (M/R) has become increasingly popular as an Internet scale, data intensive processing platform. In the context of machine learning based spam filter training, support vector machine (SVM) based techniques have been proven effective. SVM training is however a computationally intensive process. In this dissertation, a M/R based distributed SVM algorithm for scalable spam filter training, designated MRSMO, is presented. By distributing and processing subsets of the training data across multiple participating computing nodes, the distributed SVM reduces spam filter training time significantly. To mitigate the accuracy degradation introduced by the adopted approach, a Resource Description Framework (RDF) based feedback loop is evaluated. Experimental results demonstrate that this improves the accuracy levels of the distributed SVM beyond the original sequential counterpart.
Effectively exploiting large scale, ‘Cloud’ based, heterogeneous processing capabilities for M/R in what can be considered a non-deterministic environment requires the consideration of a number of perspectives. In this work, gSched, a Hadoop M/R based, heterogeneous aware task to node matching and allocation scheme is designed. Using MRSMO as a baseline, experimental evaluation indicates that gSched improves on the performance of the out-of-the box Hadoop counterpart in a typical Cloud based infrastructure.

DECENTRALIZED RESOURCE ORCHESTRATION FOR HETEROGENEOUS GRIDS
Modern desktop machines now use multi-core CPUs to enable improved performance. However, achieving high performance on multi-core machines without optimized software support is still difficult even in a single machine, because contention for shared resources can make it hard to exploit multiple computing resources efficiently. Moreover, more diverse and heterogeneous hardware platforms (e.g. general-purpose GPU and Cell processors) have emerged and begun to impact grid computing. Given that heterogeneity and diversity are now a major trend going forward, grid computing must support these environmental changes.
In this dissertation, I design and evaluate a decentralized resource management scheme to exploit heterogeneous multiple computing resources effectively. I suggest resource management algorithms that can efficiently utilize a diverse computational environment, including multiple symmetric computing entities and heterogeneous multi-computing entities, and achieve good load-balancing and high total system throughput. Moreover, I propose expressive resource description techniques to accommodate more heterogeneous environments, allowing incoming jobs with complex requirements to be matched to available resources.
First, I develop decentralized resource management frameworks and job scheduling schemes to exploit multi-core nodes in peer-to-peer grids. I present two new load-balancing schemes that explicitly account for resource sharing and contention across multiple cores within a single machine, and propose a simple performance prediction model that can represent a continuum of resource sharing among cores of a CPU. Second, I provide scalable resource discovery and load balancing techniques to accommodate nodes with many types of computing elements, such as multi-core CPUs and GPUs, in a peer-to-peer grid architecture. My scheme takes into account diverse aspects of heterogeneous nodes to maximize overall system throughput as well as minimize messaging costs without sacrificing the failure resilience provided by an underlying peer-to-peer overlay network. Finally, I propose an expressive resource discovery method to support multi-attribute, range-based job constraints. The common approach of using simple attribute indexes does not suffice, as range-based constraints may be satisfied by more than a single value. I design a compact ID-based representation for resource characteristics, and integrate this representation into the decentralized resource discovery framework.
By extensive experimental results via simulation, I show that my schemes can match heterogeneous jobs to heterogeneous resources both effectively (good matches are found, load is balanced), and efficiently (the new functionality imposes little overhead)
