    A channel model and coding for vehicle to vehicle communication based on a developed V-SCME

    Over the recent years, VANET communication has attracted a lot of attention due to its potential in facilitating the implementation of 'Intelligent Transport System'. Vehicular applications need to be completely tested before deploying them in the real world. In this context, VANET simulations would be preferred in order to evaluate and validate the proposed model, these simulations are considered inexpensive compared to the real world (hardware) tests. The development of a more realistic simulation environment for VANET is critical in ensuring high performance. Any environment required for simulating VANET, needs to be more realistic and include a precise representation of vehicle movements, as well as passing signals among different vehicles. In order to achieve efficient results that reflect the reality, a high computational power during the simulation is needed which consumes a lot of time. The existing simulation tools could not simulate the exact physical conditions of the real world, so results can be viewed as unsatisfactory when compared with real world experiments. This thesis describes two approaches to improve such vehicle to vehicle communication. The first one is based on the development of an already existing approach, the Spatial Channel Model Extended (SCME) for cellular communication which is a verified, validated and well-established communication channel model. The new developed model, is called Vehicular - Spatial Channel Model Extended (V-SCME) and can be utilised for Vehicle to Vehicle communication. V-SCME is a statistical channel model which was specifically developed and configured to satisfy the requirements of the highly dynamic network topology such as vehicle to vehicle communication. V-SCME provides a precise channel coefficients library for vehicle to vehicle communication for use by the research community, so as to reduce the overall simulation time. The second approach is to apply V-BLAST (MIMO) coding which can be implemented with vehicle to vehicle communication and improve its performance over the V-SCME. The V- SCME channel model with V-BLAST coding system was used to improve vehicle to vehicle physical layer performance, which is a novel contribution. Based on analysis and simulations, it was found that the developed channel model V-SCME is a good solution to satisfy the requirements of vehicle to vehicle communication, where it has considered a lot of parameters in order to obtain more realistic results compared with the real world tests. In addition, V-BLAST (MIMO) coding with the V-SCME has shown an improvement in the bit error rate. The obtained results were intensively compared with other types of MIMO coding

    Performance investigation of spatial modulation systems under realistic channel models

    In order to fulfil the explosive demand for convenient wireless data access, novel wireless technologies such as the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) have widely been used to improve the link reliability and capacity of wireless communication systems. In recent years, a new MIMO technology named the spatial modulation (SM) has attracted signi cant research interest due to its reported enhancement on the system performance with the reasonable system complexity. Before a new technology comes into real use, it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate its performance under different scenarios. In this thesis, we investigate the performance of SM systems under some important realistic scenarios for future wireless communications, such as the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), the high-speed train (HST), and the massive MIMO scenarios. Firstly, the bit error rate (BER) performance of SM systems under a novel threedimensional (3D) geometry based stochastic model (GBSM) for V2V MIMO channels is investigated by both theoretical analysis and system simulations. The impacts of vehicle tra c density (VTD), Doppler effect, and 3D feature on the BER performance of SM systems are thoroughly studied. In addition, other MIMO technologies, such as the vertical Bell Labs layered space-time (V-BLAST), the Alamouti scheme are compared with SM under different simulation settings. Secondly, the BER performance of SM systems is studied under a non-stationary wideband HST GBSM considering the non-ideal channel estimation case. The timevarying behaviour of the channel and its impact on the performance of SM systems are comprehensively investigated. The accurate theoretical BER expression of SM systems under a non-stationary wideband HST channels with non-ideal channel estimation is derived. A novel statistic property named stationary interval in terms of the space-time correlation function (STCF) is introduced in order to clearly explain all theoretical and simulation results. Thirdly, the performance of SM systems is evaluated under a Kroneck-based massive MIMO channel model. As a massive MIMO system employs large numbers of antennas, antenna elements are distributed over a wide range. Thus, different antenna elements may observe different sets of clusters. How this phenomenon affects the performance of SM systems is investigated by considering a survival probability of clusters, which abstracts the birth-death process of each cluster in the channel model. Moreover, the performance of SM systems is also compared with that of other MIMO technologies under the massive MIMO channel model. In summary, all research works in this thesis have considered realistic MIMO channel models, which are meaningful for the test, performance evaluation, and implementation of SM technology for future advanced wireless communications systems

    Internet of Things in Emergency Medical Care and Services

    Emergency care is a critical area of medicine whose outcomes are influenced by the time, availability, and accuracy of contextual information. In addition, the success of emergency care depends on the quality and accuracy of the information received during the emergency call and data collected during the emergency transportation. The success of a follow medical treatment at an emergency care unit depends too on data collected during the two phases: emergency call and transport. However, most information received during an emergency-call is inaccurate and the process of information collection, storage, processing, and retrieval, during an emergency-transportation, is remaining manual and time-consuming. Emergency doctors mostly lack patient’s health records and base the medical treatment on a set of collected information including information provided by the patient or his relatives. Hence, the emergency care delivery is more patient-centered than patient-centric information. Wireless body area network and Internet of Technology (IoT) enable accurate collection of data and are increasingly used in medical applications. This chapter discusses the challenges facing the emergency medical care services delivery, especially in the developing countries. It presents and discusses an IoT platform for a patient-centric-information-based emergency care services delivery. The study is focused on a case of road traffic injury.     ASGR: An Artificial Spider-Web-Based Geographic Routing in Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks

    Recently, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have been attracting significant attention for their potential for guaranteeing road safety and improving traffic comfort. Due to high mobility and frequent link disconnections, it becomes quite challenging to establish a reliable route for delivering packets in VANETs. To deal with these challenges, an artificial spider geographic routing in urban VAENTs (ASGR) is proposed in this paper. First, from the point of bionic view, we construct the spider web based on the network topology to initially select the feasible paths to the destination using artificial spiders. Next, the connection-quality model and transmission-latency model are established to generate the routing selection metric to choose the best route from all the feasible paths. At last, a selective forwarding scheme is presented to effectively forward the packets in the selected route, by taking into account the nodal movement and signal propagation characteristics. Finally, we implement our protocol on NS2 with different complexity maps and simulation parameters. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared with the existing schemes, when the packets generate speed, the number of vehicles and number of connections are varying, our proposed ASGR still performs best in terms of packet delivery ratio and average transmission delay with an up to 15% and 94% improvement, respectively

    Cooperative control of autonomous connected vehicles from a Networked Control perspective: Theory and experimental validation

    Formation control of autonomous connected vehicles is one of the typical problems addressed in the general context of networked control systems. By leveraging this paradigm, a platoon composed by multiple connected and automated vehicles is represented as one-dimensional network of dynamical agents, in which each agent only uses its neighboring information to locally control its motion, while it aims to achieve certain global coordination with all other agents. Within this theoretical framework, control algorithms are traditionally designed based on an implicit assumption of unlimited bandwidth and perfect communication environments. However, in practice, wireless communication networks, enabling the cooperative driving applications, introduce unavoidable communication impairments such as transmission delay and packet losses that strongly affect the performances of cooperative driving. Moreover, in addition to this problem, wireless communication networks can suffer different security threats. The challenge in the control field is hence to design cooperative control algorithms that are robust to communication impairments and resilient to cyber attacks. The work aim is to tackle and solve these challenges by proposing different properly designed control strategies. They are validated both in analytical, numerical and experimental ways. Obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the strategies in coping with communication impairments and security vulnerabilities

    LR based pre-coding aided spatial modulation with sub-optimal detection for V2X communications

    In this manuscript, a novel transmit pre-coding matrix generation method and a linear decoding scheme are proposed for the generalised pre-coding aided spatial modulation (GPSM) system. The GPSM scheme proposed recently is a new multiple input multiple output (MIMO) transmission technique, which conveys information by activating a subset of receive antennas with the aid of transmit pre-coding. This scheme seems to be suitable in V2X since the base station only transmits data to certain users/vehicles. The proposed pre-coding matrix is based on the lattice reduction (LR) principle and provides significant performance improvement over the original pre-coding design in GPSM. Furthermore, as the GPSM in large-scale antenna systems, which is a trend in future communication systems, might be too complex to be implemented with the maximum likelihood (ML) detection, a linear decoding method is proposed to reduce the implementation complexity. Our studies show that the performance degradation caused by the linear detector can be compensated by the proposed LR based pre-coding. As a result, the LR based GPSM with linear detection is capable of achieving the comparable performance as that of the original GPSM scheme employing ML detection, while with significantly decreased detection complexity

    Improving Vehicular ad hoc Network Protocols to Support Safety Applications in Realistic Scenarios

    La convergencia de las telecomunicaciones, la informática, la tecnología inalámbrica y los sistemas de transporte, va a facilitar que nuestras carreteras y autopistas nos sirvan tanto como plataforma de transporte, como de comunicaciones. Estos cambios van a revolucionar completamente cómo y cuándo vamos a acceder a determinados servicios, comunicarnos, viajar, entretenernos, y navegar, en un futuro muy cercano. Las redes vehiculares ad hoc (vehicular ad hoc networks VANETs) son redes de comunicación inalámbricas que no requieren de ningún tipo de infraestructura, y que permiten la comunicación y conducción cooperativa entre los vehículos en la carretera. Los vehículos actúan como nodos de comunicación y transmisores, formando redes dinámicas junto a otros vehículos cercanos en entornos urbanos y autopistas. Las características especiales de las redes vehiculares favorecen el desarrollo de servicios y aplicaciones atractivas y desafiantes. En esta tesis nos centramos en las aplicaciones relacionadas con la seguridad. Específicamente, desarrollamos y evaluamos un novedoso protocol que mejora la seguridad en las carreteras. Nuestra propuesta combina el uso de información de la localización de los vehículos y las características del mapa del escenario, para mejorar la diseminación de los mensajes de alerta. En las aplicaciones de seguridad para redes vehiculares, nuestra propuesta permite reducir el problema de las tormentas de difusión, mientras que se mantiene una alta efectividad en la diseminación de los mensajes hacia los vehículos cercanos. Debido a que desplegar y evaluar redes VANET supone un gran coste y una tarea dura, la metodología basada en la simulación se muestra como una metodología alternativa a la implementación real. A diferencia de otros trabajos previos, con el fin de evaluar nuestra propuesta en un entorno realista, en nuestras simulaciones tenemos muy en cuenta tanto la movilidad de los vehículos, como la transmisión de radio en entornos urbanos, especialmente cuando los edificios interfieren en la propagación de la señal de radio. Con este propósito, desarrollamos herramientas para la simulación de VANETs más precisas y realistas, mejorando tanto la modelización de la propagación de radio, como la movilidad de los vehículos, obteniendo una solución que permite integrar mapas reales en el entorno de simulación. Finalmente, evaluamos las prestaciones de nuestro protocolo propuesto haciendo uso de nuestra plataforma de simulación mejorada, evidenciando la importancia del uso de un entorno de simulación adecuado para conseguir resultados más realistas y poder obtener conclusiones más significativas.Martínez Domínguez, FJ.
