On the Benefits of Network-Level Cooperation in Millimeter-Wave Communications
Relaying techniques for millimeter-wave wireless networks represent a
powerful solution for improving the transmission performance. In this work, we
quantify the benefits in terms of delay and throughput for a random-access
multi-user millimeter-wave wireless network, assisted by a full-duplex network
cooperative relay. The relay is equipped with a queue for which we analyze the
performance characteristics (e.g., arrival rate, service rate, average size,
and stability condition). Moreover, we study two possible transmission schemes:
fully directional and broadcast. In the former, the source nodes transmit a
packet either to the relay or to the destination by using narrow beams,
whereas, in the latter, the nodes transmit to both the destination and the
relay in the same timeslot by using a wider beam, but with lower beamforming
gain. In our analysis, we also take into account the beam alignment phase that
occurs every time a transmitter node changes the destination node. We show how
the beam alignment duration, as well as position and number of transmitting
nodes, significantly affect the network performance. Moreover, we illustrate
the optimal transmission scheme (i.e., broadcast or fully directional) for
several system parameters and show that a fully directional transmission is not
always beneficial, but, in some scenarios, broadcasting and relaying can
improve the performance in terms of throughput and delay.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1804.0945
Relay Selection with Network Coding in Two-Way Relay Channels
In this paper, we consider the design of joint network coding (NC)and relay
selection (RS) in two-way relay channels. In the proposed schemes, two users
first sequentially broadcast their respective information to all the relays. We
propose two RS schemes, a single relay selection with NC and a dual relay
selection with NC. For both schemes, the selected relay(s) perform NC on the
received signals sent from the two users and forward them to both users. The
proposed schemes are analyzed and the exact bit error rate (BER) expressions
are derived and verified through Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the
dual relay selection with NC outperforms other considered relay selection
schemes in two-way relay channels. The results also reveal that the proposed NC
relay selection schemes provide a selection gain compared to a NC scheme with
no relay selection, and a network coding gain relative to a conventional relay
selection scheme with no NC.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
60 GHz MAC Standardization: Progress and Way Forward
Communication at mmWave frequencies has been the focus in the recent years.
In this paper, we discuss standardization efforts in 60 GHz short range
communication and the progress therein. We compare the available standards in
terms of network architecture, medium access control mechanisms, physical layer
techniques and several other features. Comparative analysis indicates that IEEE
802.11ad is likely to lead the short-range indoor communication at 60 GHz. We
bring to the fore resolved and unresolved issues pertaining to robust WLAN
connectivity at 60 GHz. Further, we discuss the role of mmWave bands in 5G
communication scenarios and highlight the further efforts required in terms of
research and standardization
Outage Analysis for SWIPT-Enabled Two-Way Cognitive Cooperative Communications
In this paper, we study a cooperative cognitive radio network (CCRN) where
the secondary user-transmitter (SU-Tx) assists bi-directional communication
between a pair of primary users (PUs) following the principle of two-way
relaying. In return, it gets access to the spectrum of the PUs to enable its
own transmission to SU-receiver (SU-Rx). Further, in order to support
sustainable operation of the network, SU-Tx is assumed to harvest energy from
the RF signals received from the PUs, using the technique of simultaneous
wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). Assuming a decode-and-forward
behaviour and power-splitting based relaying protocol at SU-Tx, closed form
expressions for outage probability of PU and SU are obtained. Simulation
results validate our analytical results and illustrate spectrum-efficiency and
energy-efficiency advantages of the proposed system over one-way relaying.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Vehicular
