Priority realloc : a threefold mechanism for route and resources allocation in EONs
Cotutela Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya i Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São PauloBackbone networks are responsible for long-haul data transport serving many clients with a large volume of data. Since long-haul data transport service must rely on a robust high capacity network the current technology broadly adopted by the industry is Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). WDM networks enable one single fiber to operate with multiple high capacity channels, drastically increasing the fiber capacity. In WDM networks each channel is associated with an individual wavelength. Therefore a whole wavelength capacity is assigned to a connection, causing waste of bandwidth in case the connection bandwidth requirement is less than the channel total capacity.
In the last half decade, Elastic Optical Networks (EON) have been proposed and developed based on the flexible use of the optical spectrum known as the flexigrid. EONs are adaptable to clients requirements and may enhance optical networks performance. For these reasons, research community and data transport providers have been demonstrating increasingly high interest in EONs which are likely to replace WDM as the universally adopted technology in backbone networks in the near future.
EONs have two characteristics that may limit its efficient resources use. The spectrum fragmentation, inherent to the dynamic EON operation, decreases the network capacity to assign resources to connection requests increasing network blocking probability. The spectrum fragmentation also intensifies the denial of service to higher rate request inducing service unfairness.
Due to the fact EONs were just recently developed and proposed, the aforementioned issues were not yet extensively studied and solutions are still being proposed. Furthermore, EONs do not yet provide specific features as differentiated service mechanisms. Differentiated service strategies are important in backbone networks to guarantee client's diverse requirements in case of a network failure or the natural congestion and resources contention that may occur at some periods of time in a network.
Impelled by the foregoing facts, this thesis objective is three-fold. By means of developing and proposing a mechanism for routing and resources assignment in EONs, we intend to provide differentiated service while decreasing fragmentation level and increasing service fairness.
The mechanism proposed and explained in this thesis was tested in an EON simulation environment and performance results indicated that it promotes beneficial performance enhancements when compared to benchmark algorithms.Redes backbone sao responsáveis pelo transporte de dados à longa distância que atendem a uma grande quantidade de clientes com um grande volume de dados. A QoS-enabled resource management scheme for F-HMIPv6 micro mobility approach
In the near future, wireless networks will certainly run real-time applications with special Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this context micro mobility management schemes such as Fast Handovers over Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (F-HMIPv6) will be a useful tool in reducing Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) handover disruption and thereby to improve delay and losses. However, F-HMIPv6 alone does not support QoS requirements for real-time applications. Therefore, in order to accomplish this goal, a novel resource management scheme for the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) QoS model is proposed to be used as an add-on to F-HMIPv6. The new resource management scheme combines the F-HMIPv6 functionalities with the DiffServ QoS model and with network congestion control and dynamic reallocation mechanisms in order to accommodate different QoS traffic requirements. This new scheme based on a Measurement-Based Admission Control (MBAC) algorithm is effective, simple, scalable and avoids the well known traditional resource reservation issues such as state maintenance, signaling overhead and processing load. By means of the admission evaluation of new flows and handover flows, it is able to provide the desired QoS requirements for new flows while preserving the QoS of existing ones. The evaluated results show that all QoS metrics analyzed were significantly improved with the new architecture indicating that it is able to provide a highly predictive QoS support to F-HMIPv6

Energy-Efficient Management of Data Center Resources for Cloud Computing: A Vision, Architectural Elements, and Open Challenges
Cloud computing is offering utility-oriented IT services to users worldwide.
Based on a pay-as-you-go model, it enables hosting of pervasive applications
from consumer, scientific, and business domains. However, data centers hosting
Cloud applications consume huge amounts of energy, contributing to high
operational costs and carbon footprints to the environment. Therefore, we need
Green Cloud computing solutions that can not only save energy for the
environment but also reduce operational costs. This paper presents vision,
challenges, and architectural elements for energy-efficient management of Cloud
computing environments. We focus on the development of dynamic resource
provisioning and allocation algorithms that consider the synergy between
various data center infrastructures (i.e., the hardware, power units, cooling
and software), and holistically work to boost data center energy efficiency and
performance. In particular, this paper proposes (a) architectural principles
for energy-efficient management of Clouds; (b) energy-efficient resource
allocation policies and scheduling algorithms considering quality-of-service
expectations, and devices power usage characteristics; and (c) a novel software
technology for energy-efficient management of Clouds. We have validated our
approach by conducting a set of rigorous performance evaluation study using the
CloudSim toolkit. The results demonstrate that Cloud computing model has
immense potential as it offers significant performance gains as regards to
response time and cost saving under dynamic workload scenarios.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures,Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference

Chained Orchestrator Algorithm for RAN-Slicing Resource Management: A Contribution to Ultra-Reliable 6G Communications
The exponentially growing trend of Internet-connected devices and the development of new applications have led to an increase in demands and data rates flowing over cellular networks. If this continues to have the same tendency, the classification of 5G services must evolve to encompass emerging communications. The advent of the 6G Communications concept takes this into account and raises a new classification of services. In addition, an increase in network specifications was established. To meet these new requirements, enabling technologies are used to augment and manage Radio Access Network (RAN) resources. One of the most important mechanisms is the logical segmentation of the RAN, i.e. RAN-Slicing. In this study, we explored the problem of resource allocation in a RAN-Slicing environment for 6G ecosystems in depth, with a focus on network reliability. We also propose a chained orchestrator algorithm for dynamic resource management that includes estimation techniques, inter-slice resource sharing and intra-slice resource assignment. These mechanisms are applied to new types of services in the future generation of cellular networks to improve the network latency, capacity and reliability. The numerical results show a reduction in blocked connections of 38.46% for eURLLC type services, 21.87% for feMBB services, 12.5% for umMTC, 11.86% for ELDP and 11.76% for LDHMC.Spanish National Program of Research, Development, Innovation, under Grant

A QoS-aware architecture for mobile internet
No
Over the last few years, several network communication challenges have arisen as a
result of the growing number of users demanding Quality of Service (QoS) and mobility
simultaneously.
In order to satisfy these very demanding customers, the markets are imposing new
challenges to wireless networks by demanding heterogeneity in terms of wireless access
technologies, new services, suited QoS levels to real-time applications, high usability and
improved performance.
However, the Internet has been designed for providing application services without quality
guarantees. That explains why, in the last years several efforts have been made to
endow Internet with QoS support. From the developed efforts have resulted two QoS
paradigms: Integrated Services (IntServ) which offers the guaranteed service model and
the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) which offers the predictive service model.
Although these QoS models have been designed before the existence of mobile Internet,
so they do not consider the mobility issue. For instance, the guaranteed service model
requires that whenever a Mobile Node (MN) wants to move to a new location, the allocated
resources in the old path must be released and a new resource reservation in a new path must
be made, resulting in extra signaling overhead, heavy processing and state load. Therefore,
if handovers are frequent, large mobility and QoS signaling messages will be created in
the access networks. Consequently, significant scalability problems may arise with this type of
service model.
The predicted service model, on the other hand, requires an additional features such
as dynamic and adaptive resource management in order to be efficient in a very dynamic
network such as a mobile network.
A QoS solution for mobile environments must provide the capacity to adapt its resource
utilization to a changeable nature of wireless networks because they have a more dynamic behavior due to incoming or outgoing handovers. For this reason, a QoS signalization for
dynamic resource provisioning is necessary in order to supply adequate QoS levels to mobile
users.
On the other hand, the current standard protocol for mobile Internet, Mobile IPv6
(MIPv6), reveals limitations in scenarios where users are constantly moving to another
point of attachment. In these situations, MIPv6 introduces latency times that are not
sustainable for applications with strict QoS requirements.
All things considered, reveal the emerging need to adapt the current standard mobility
protocol and QoS models to satisfy today’s mobile user’s requirements.
To accomplish this goal, the present work proposes enhancements in terms of the MIPv6
protocol mobility management scheme as well as in DiffServ QoS model resource management.
The former was enhanced for micro-mobility scenarios with a specific combination of
FMIPv6 (Fast Mobile IPv6) and HMIPv6 (Hierarchical Mobile IPv6) protocols. Whereas,
the latter was enhanced for mobile environments with dynamic and adaptive features by
using QoS signalization as well as distributed resource management.
The mobility and resource management has also been coupled in the proposed solution
with the objective of optimizing the resource utilization in a environment where resources
are typically scarce.
In order to assess model performance as well as its parametrization, a simulation model
has been designed and implemented in the Network Simulator version two (NS-2).
The model´s performance evaluation has been conducted based on the respective data
acquired from statistical analysis in order to validate and consolidate the conclusions. Simulation
results indicate that the solution avoids network congestion and starvation of less
priority DiffServ classes.
Moreover, the results also indicate that bandwidth utilization for priority classes increases
and the QoS offered to MN’s applications, in each DiffServ class, remains unchangeable
with MN mobility.
The proposed model is simple and easy to implement. It considers mobile Internet
requirements and has proven to be effective and capable of providing services with highly
reliable QoS to mobile applications.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - Bolsa SFRH/BD/35245/200
Dynamic bandwidth management with service differentiation over ethernet passive optical networks
Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) address the first mile of the communication infrastructure between the service provider central offices and the customer sites. As a low-cost, high speed technology, EPONs are deemed as the solution to the bottleneck problem of the broadband access network.
A major feature of EPONs is the utility of a shared upstream channel among the end users. Only a single optical network unit (GNU) may transmit during a timeslot to avoid data collisions. In order to provide diverse quality of service (QoS), the bandwidth management of the upstream channel is essential for the successful implementation of EPONs, and thus, an efficient medium access control is required to facilitate statistical multiplexing among local traffics.
This dissertation addresses the upstream bandwidth allocation over EPONs. An efficient mechanism, i.e., limited sharing with traffic prediction (LSTP), has been proposed to arbitrate the upstream bandwidth among ONUs. The MultiPoint Control Protocol (MPCP) messages, which are stipulated by the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) Task Force, are adopted by LSTP to facilitate the dynamic bandwidth negotiation between an GNU and the OLT. The bandwidth requirement of an ONU includes the already enqueued frames and the predicted incoming frames during the waiting time. The OLT arbitrates the bandwidth assignment based on the queue status report from an GNU, the traffic prediction, and the agreed service contract.
With respect to the performance evaluation, theoretical analysis on the frame loss, the frame delay, and the queue length has been conducted. The quantitative results demonstrate that 1) the innovative LSTP mechanism dynamically allocates the upstream bandwidth among multiple ONUs; 2) the traffic predictor at the OLT delivers satisfactory prediction for the bursty self-similar traffic, and thereby, contributing to the reduction of frame loss, frame delay, and queue length; and 3) the bandwidth arbitration at the OLT effectively restricts the aggressive bandwidth competition among ONUs by adopting the service level agreement (SLA) parameter as the upper bound. Aside from analysis, the LSTP mechanism has been substantiated by experimental simulations.
In order to differentiate the service provisioning among diverse users, LSTP is further enhanced with the support of dynamic bandwidth negotiation based on multiple queues. The incoming traffics are first classified into three classes, and then enqueued into the corresponding queues. A traffic predictor is dedicated to one class of traffic from an GNU. Service differentiation among classes are provided by the combination of queuing and scheduling at the GNU side. At the OLT side, the bandwidth allocation for each class of traffic is based on the reported queue status and the traffic prediction, and is upper-bounded by the SLA parameter. Experimental simulations have justified the feasibility of providing service differentiation over the broadband EPONs
Revenue maximization problems in commercial data centers
PhD ThesisAs IT systems are becoming more important everyday, one of the main concerns is that users may
face major problems and eventually incur major costs if computing systems do not meet the expected
performance requirements: customers expect reliability and performance guarantees, while
underperforming systems loose revenues. Even with the adoption of data centers as the hub of
IT organizations and provider of business efficiencies the problems are not over because it is extremely
difficult for service providers to meet the promised performance guarantees in the face of
unpredictable demand. One possible approach is the adoption of Service Level Agreements (SLAs),
contracts that specify a level of performance that must be met and compensations in case of failure.
In this thesis I will address some of the performance problems arising when IT companies sell
the service of running ‘jobs’ subject to Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. In particular, the aim
is to improve the efficiency of service provisioning systems by allowing them to adapt to changing
demand conditions.
First, I will define the problem in terms of an utility function to maximize. Two different models
are analyzed, one for single jobs and the other useful to deal with session-based traffic. Then,
I will introduce an autonomic model for service provision. The architecture consists of a set of
hosted applications that share a certain number of servers. The system collects demand and performance
statistics and estimates traffic parameters. These estimates are used by management policies
which implement dynamic resource allocation and admission algorithms. Results from a number of
experiments show that the performance of these heuristics is close to optimal.QoSP (Quality of Service Provisioning)British Teleco
