    Performance Guaranteed Inertia Emulation for Diesel-Wind System Feed Microgrid via Model Reference Control

    In this paper, a model reference control based inertia emulation strategy is proposed. Desired inertia can be precisely emulated through this control strategy so that guaranteed performance is ensured. A typical frequency response model with parametrical inertia is set to be the reference model. A measurement at a specific location delivers the information of disturbance acting on the diesel-wind system to the reference model. The objective is for the speed of the diesel-wind system to track the reference model. Since active power variation is dominantly governed by mechanical dynamics and modes, only mechanical dynamics and states, i.e., a swing-engine-governor system plus a reduced-order wind turbine generator, are involved in the feedback control design. The controller is implemented in a three-phase diesel-wind system feed microgrid.     Utilizing Converter-Interfaced Sources for Frequency Control with Guaranteed Performance in Power Systems

    To integrate renewable energy, converter-interfaced sources (CISs) keep penetrating into power systems and degrade the grid frequency response. Control synthesis towards guaranteed performance is a challenging task. Meanwhile, the potentials of highly controllable converters are far from fully developed. With properly designed controllers the CISs can not only eliminate the negative impacts on the grid, but also provide performance guarantees.First, the wind turbine generator (WTG) is chosen to represent the CISs. An augmented system frequency response (ASFR) model is derived, including the system frequency response model and a reduced-order model of the WTG representing the supportive active power due to the supplementary inputs.Second, the framework for safety verification is introduced. A new concept, region of safety (ROS), is proposed, and the safe switching principle is provided. Two different approaches are proposed to estimate the largest ROS, which can be solved using the sum of squares programming.Third, the critical switching instants for adequate frequency response are obtained through the study of the ASFR model. A safe switching window is discovered, and a safe speed recovery strategy is proposed to ensure the safety of the second frequency dip due to the WTG speed recovery.Fourth, an adaptive safety supervisory control (SSC) is proposed with a two-loop configuration, where the supervisor is scheduled with respect to the varying renewable penetration level. For small-scale system, a decentralized fashion of the SSC is proposed under rational approximations and verified on the IEEE 39-bus system.Fifth, a two-level control diagram is proposed so that the frequency of a microgrid satisfies the temporal logic specifications (TLSs). The controller is configured into a scheduling level and a triggering level. The satisfaction of TLSs will be guaranteed by the scheduling level, and triggering level will determine the activation instant.Finally, a novel model reference control based synthetic inertia emulation strategy is proposed. This novel control strategy ensures precise emulated inertia by the WTGs as opposed to the trial and error procedure of conventional methods. Safety bounds can be easily derived based on the reference model under the worst-case scenario

    Efficient Control Approaches for Guaranteed Frequency Performance in Power Systems

    Due to high penetration of renewable energy, converter-interfaced sources are increasing in power systems and degrading the grid frequency response. Synthetic inertia emulation and guaranteed primary frequency response is a challenging task. Still, there is high potential for application of highly controllable converter-interfaced devices to help performance. Renewable energy sources and demand side smart devices also need to be equipped with innovative frequency control approaches that contribute to frequency regulation operations. First, the wind turbine generator is chosen to represent an example of a converter- interfaced source. An augmented system frequency response model is derived, including the system frequency response model and a reduced-order model of the wind turbine generator representing the supportive active power due to supplementary inputs. An output feedback observer-based control is designed to provide guaranteed frequency performance. System performance is analyzed for different short circuit ratio scenarios where a lower bound to guarantee the performance is obtained. Second, the load side control for frequency regulation with its challenges is introduced. 5G technology and its potential application in smart grids are analyzed. The effect of communication delays and packet losses on inertia emulation are investigated to show the need of using improved communication infrastructure. Third, a robust delay compensation for primary frequency control using fast demand response is proposed. Possible system structured uncertainties and communication delays are considered to limit frequency variations using the proposed control approach. An uncertain governor dead-band model is introduced to capture frequency response characteristics. Guaranteed inertial response is achieved and compared with a PI-based Smith predictor controller to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Fourth, set theoretic methods for safety verification to provide guaranteed frequency response are introduced. The Barrier certificate approach using a linear programming relaxation by Handelman’s representation is proposed with its application to power systems. Finally, the Handelman’s based barrier certificate approach for adequate frequency performance is studied. The computational algorithm is provided for the proposed method and validated using power system benchmark case studies with a discussion on a safety supervisory control (SSC)

    Adaptive inertia emulation control for high-speed flywheel energy storage systems

    Low-inertia power systems suffer from a high rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) during a sudden imbalance in supply and demand. Inertia emulation techniques using storage systems, such as flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs), can elp to reduce the ROCOF by rapidly providing the needed power to balance the grid. In this work, a new adaptive ontroller for inertia emulation using high-speed FESS is proposed. The controller inertia and damping coefficients vary using a combination of bang–bang control approaches and self-adaptive ones, to simultaneously improve both the ROCOF and the frequency nadir. The performance of the proposed adaptive controller has been initially validated and compared with several existing adaptive controllers by means of offline simulations, and then validated with experimental results. The proposed controller has been implemented on a real 60 kW high-speed FESS, and its performance has been evaluated by means of power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing of the FESS in realistic grid conditions. Both Simulations and PHIL testing results confirm that the proposed inertia emulation control for the FESS outperforms several previously reported controllers, in terms of reducing the maximum ROCOF and improving the frequency nadir during large disturbances

    Modeling and Control of Diesel-Hydrokinetic Microgrids

    A large number of decentralized communities in Canada and particularly in Québec rely on diesel power generation. The cost of electricity and environmental concerns suggest that hydrokinetic energy is a potential for power generation. Hydrokinetic energy conversion systems (HKECSs) are clean, reliable alternatives, and more beneficial than other renewable energy sources and conventional hydropower generation. However, due to the stochastic nature of river speed and variable load patterns of decentralized communities, the use of a hybrid diesel- hydrokinetic (D-HK) microgrid system has advantages. A large or medium penetration level has a negative effect on the short-term (transient) and long-term (steady-state) performance of such a hybrid system if the HKECS is controlled based on conventional control schemes. The conventional control scheme of the HKECS is the maximum power point tracking (MPPT). In the long-term conditions, the diesel generator set (genset) can operate at a reduced load where the role of the HKECS is to reduce the electrical load on the diesel genset (light loading). In the short-term, the frequency of the microgrid can vary due to the variable nature of water speed and load patterns. This can lead to power quality problems like a high rate of change of frequency or power, frequency fluctuations, etc. Moreover, these problems are magnified in storage-less DHK microgrids where a conventional energy storage system is not available to mitigate power as well as frequency deviations by controlling active power. Therefore, developing sophisticated control strategies for the HKECS to mitigate problems as mentioned above are necessary. Another challenging issue is a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform for testing and developing a D-HK microgrid. A dispatchable power controller for a fixed-pitch cross-flow turbine-based HKECS operating in the low rotational speed (stall) region is presented in this thesis. It delivers a given power requested by an operator provided that the water speed is high enough. If not, it delivers as much as possible, operating with an MPPT algorithm while meeting the basic operating limits (i.e., generator voltage and rotor speed, rated power, and maximum water speed), shutting down automatically if necessary. A supervisory control scheme provides a smooth transition between modes of operation as the water speed and reference power from the operator vary. The performance of the proposed dispatchable power controller and supervisory control algorithm is verified experimentally with an electromechanical-based hydrokinetic turbine (HKT) emulator. The permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is preferred in small HKECSs. So, a converter-based PMSG emulator as a testbed for designing, analyzing, and testing of the generator’s power electronic interface and its control system is developed. A 6-switch voltage source converter (VSC) is used as a power amplifier to mimic the behaviour of the PMSG supplying linear and non-linear loads. Technical challenges of the PMSG emulator are considered, and proper solutions are suggested. Finally, an active power sharing control strategy for a storage-less D-HK microgrid with medium and high penetration of hydrokinetic power to mitigate: 1) the effect of the grid frequency fluctuation due to instantaneous variation in the water speed/load, and 2) light loading operation of the diesel engine is proposed. A supplementary control loop that includes virtual inertia and frequency droop control is added to the conventional control system of HKECS in order to provide load power sharing and frequency support control. The proposed strategy is experimentally verified with diesel engine and HKT emulators controlled via a dSPACE® rapid control prototyping system.     Power Management Strategies for a Wind Energy Source in an Isolated Microgrid and Grid Connected System

    This thesis focuses on the development of power management control strategies for a direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed wind turbine (VSWT). Two modes of operation have been considered: (1) isolated/islanded mode, and (2) grid-connected mode. In the isolated/islanded mode, the system requires additional energy sources and sinks to counterbalance the intermittent nature of the wind. Thus, battery energy storage and photovoltaic (PV) systems have been integrated with the wind turbine to form a microgrid with hybrid energy sources. For the wind/battery hybrid system, several energy management and control issues have been addressed, such as DC link voltage stability, imbalanced power flow, and constraints of the battery state of charge (SOC). To ensure the integrity of the microgrid, and to increase its flexibility, dump loads and an emergency back-up AC source (can be a diesel generator set) have been used to protect the system against the excessive power production from the wind and PV systems, as well as the intermittent nature of wind source. A coordinated control strategy is proposed for the dump loads and back up AC source. An alternative control strategy is also proposed for a hybrid wind/battery system by eliminating the dedicated battery converter and the dump loads. To protect the battery against overcharging, an integrated control strategy is proposed. In addition, the dual vector voltage control (DVVC) is also developed to tackle the issues associated with unbalanced AC loads. To improve the performance of a DC microgrid consisting wind, battery, and PV, a distributed control strategy using DC link voltage (DLV) based control law is developed. This strategy provides simpler structure, less frequent mode transitions, and effective coordination among different sources without relying on real-time communication. In a grid-connected mode, this DC microgrid is connected to the grid through a single inverter at the point of common coupling (PCC). The generated wind power is only treated as a source at the DC side for the study of both unbalanced and balanced voltage sag issues at a distribution grid network. The proposed strategy consists of: (i) a vector current control with a feed-forward of the negative-sequence voltage (VCCF) to compensate for the negative sequence currents; and (ii) a power compensation factor (PCF) control for the VCCF to maintain the balanced power flow between the system and the grid. A sliding mode control strategy has also been developed to enhance the overall system performance. Appropriate grid code has been considered in this case. All the developed control strategies have been validated via extensive computer simulation with realistic system parameters. Furthermore, to valid developed control strategies in a realistic environment in real-time, a microgrid has been constructed using physical components: a wind turbine simulator (WTS), power electronic converters, simulated grid, sensors, real-time controllers and protection devices. All the control strategies developed in this system have been validated experimentally on this facility. In conclusion, several power management strategies and real-time control issues have been investigated for direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed wind turbine system in an islanded and grid-connected mode. For the islanded mode, the focuses have been on microgrid control. While for the grid-connected mode, main consideration has been on the mitigation of voltage sags at the point of common coupling (PCC)

    Power quality and inverter-generator interactions in microgrids

    This research addresses some of the difficulties faced when operating voltage controlled inverters with synchronous generators in microgrids. First, an overview of microgrid value propositions is provided, and the problems faced when attempting to use microgrids to provide improved power quality are discussed. Design considerations for different types of microgrids are provided to enable microgrids to deliver the desired functionality without adding unnecessary cost. The main body of this research investigates the poor transient load sharing encountered between voltage controlled inverters and synchronous generators in islanded operation. Poor transient load sharing results in high peak inverter rating requirements and high cost. The tradeoff between power quality and power sharing is highlighted, and methods to improve transient load sharing are proposed. The use of current limiting to protect inverters during faults and overloads is also investigated. Stability problems are identified when using simple inverter current limiting methods when operating in parallel with synchronous generators. Virtual impedance current limiting is proposed to improve transient stability during current limiting. The methods proposed in this thesis for mitigating inverter overloads and faults will allow for more reliable and cost effective application of inverter based distributed energy resources with synchronous generators in microgrids.Ph.D
