    New Fault Tolerant Multicast Routing Techniques to Enhance Distributed-Memory Systems Performance

    Distributed-memory systems are a key to achieve high performance computing and the most favorable architectures used in advanced research problems. Mesh connected multicomputer are one of the most popular architectures that have been implemented in many distributed-memory systems. These systems must support communication operations efficiently to achieve good performance. The wormhole switching technique has been widely used in design of distributed-memory systems in which the packet is divided into small flits. Also, the multicast communication has been widely used in distributed-memory systems which is one source node sends the same message to several destination nodes. Fault tolerance refers to the ability of the system to operate correctly in the presence of faults. Development of fault tolerant multicast routing algorithms in 2D mesh networks is an important issue. This dissertation presents, new fault tolerant multicast routing algorithms for distributed-memory systems performance using wormhole routed 2D mesh. These algorithms are described for fault tolerant routing in 2D mesh networks, but it can also be extended to other topologies. These algorithms are a combination of a unicast-based multicast algorithm and tree-based multicast algorithms. These algorithms works effectively for the most commonly encountered faults in mesh networks, f-rings, f-chains and concave fault regions. It is shown that the proposed routing algorithms are effective even in the presence of a large number of fault regions and large size of fault region. These algorithms are proved to be deadlock-free. Also, the problem of fault regions overlap is solved. Four essential performance metrics in mesh networks will be considered and calculated; also these algorithms are a limited-global-information-based multicasting which is a compromise of local-information-based approach and global-information-based approach. Data mining is used to validate the results and to enlarge the sample. The proposed new multicast routing techniques are used to enhance the performance of distributed-memory systems. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms

    Efficient Multicast Algorithms for Mesh and Torus Networks

    With the increasing popularity of multicomputers, efficient way of communication within its processors has become a popular area of research. Multicomputers refer to a computer system that has multiple processors, they have high computational power and they can perform multiple tasks concurrently. Mesh and Torus are some of the commonly used network topologies in building multicomputer systems. Their performance highly depends on the underlying network communication such as multicast. Multicast is a communication method in which a message is sent from a source node to a certain number of destinations. Two major parameters used to evaluate multicast are time that a multicast process takes to deliver the message to all destinations and traffic that indicates the number of links used for this process. Research indicates that in general, it is NP- complete to find an optimal multicasting algorithm which is efficient on both time and traffic. This thesis suggests two new algorithms to achieve multicast in mesh and torus networks. Extensive simulations of these algorithms show that in practice they perform better than existing ones

    Performance evaluation of distributed crossbar switch hypermesh

    The interconnection network is one of the most crucial components in any multicomputer as it greatly influences the overall system performance. Several recent studies have suggested that hypergraph networks, such as the Distributed Crossbar Switch Hypermesh (DCSH), exhibit superior topological and performance characteristics over many traditional graph networks, e.g. k-ary n-cubes. Previous work on the DCSH has focused on issues related to implementation and performance comparisons with existing networks. These comparisons have so far been confined to deterministic routing and unicast (one-to-one) communication. Using analytical models validated through simulation experiments, this thesis extends that analysis to include adaptive routing and broadcast communication. The study concentrates on wormhole switching, which has been widely adopted in practical multicomputers, thanks to its low buffering requirement and the reduced dependence of latency on distance under low traffic. Adaptive routing has recently been proposed as a means of improving network performance, but while the comparative evaluation of adaptive and deterministic routing has been widely reported in the literature, the focus has been on graph networks. The first part of this thesis deals with adaptive routing, developing an analytical model to measure latency in the DCSH, and which is used throughout the rest of the work for performance comparisons. Also, an investigation of different routing algorithms in this network is presented. Conventional k-ary n-cubes have been the underlying topology of contemporary multicomputers, but it is only recently that adaptive routing has been incorporated into such systems. The thesis studies the relative performance merits of the DCSH and k-ary n-cubes under adaptive routing strategy. The analysis takes into consideration real-world factors, such as router complexity and bandwidth constraints imposed by implementation technology. However, in any network, the routing of unicast messages is not the only factor in traffic control. In many situations (for example, parallel iterative algorithms, memory update and invalidation procedures in shared memory systems, global notification of network errors), there is a significant requirement for broadcast traffic. The DCSH, by virtue of its use of hypergraph links, can implement broadcast operations particularly efficiently. The second part of the thesis examines how the DCSH and k-ary n-cube performance is affected by the presence of a broadcast traffic component. In general, these studies demonstrate that because of their relatively high diameter, k-ary n-cubes perform poorly when message lengths are short. This is consistent with earlier more simplistic analyses which led to the proposal for the express-cube, an enhancement of the basic k-ary n-cube structure, which provides additional express channels, allowing messages to bypass groups of nodes along their paths. The final part of the thesis investigates whether this "partial bypassing" can compete with the "total bypassing" capability provided inherently by the DCSH topology

    On the performance of broadcast algorithms in interconnection networks

    Broadcast Communication is among the most primitive collective capabilities of any message passing network. Broadcast algorithms for the mesh have been widely reported in the literature. However, most existing algorithms have been studied within limited conditions, such as light traffic load and fixed network sizes. In other words, most of these algorithms have not been studied at different Quality of Service (QoS) levels. In contrast, this study examines the broadcast operation, taking into account the scalability, parallelism, a wide range of traffic loads through the propagation of broadcast messages. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to consider the issue of broadcast latency at both the network and node levels across different traffic loads. Results are shown from a comparative analysis confirming that the coded-path based broadcast algorithms exhibit superior performance characteristics over some existing algorithms

    The Effect Of Hot Spots On The Performance Of Mesh--Based Networks

    Direct network performance is affected by different design parameters which include number of virtual channels, number of ports, routing algorithm, switching technique, deadlock handling technique, packet size, and buffer size. Another factor that affects network performance is the traffic pattern. In this thesis, we study the effect of hotspot traffic on system performance. Specifically, we study the effect of hotspot factor, hotspot number, and hot spot location on the performance of mesh-based networks. Simulations are run on two network topologies, both the mesh and torus. We pay more attention to meshes because they are widely used in commercial machines. Comparisons between oblivious wormhole switching and chaotic packet switching are reported. Overall packet switching proved to be more efficient in terms of throughput when compared to wormhole switching. In the case of uniform random traffic, it is shown that the differences between chaotic and oblivious routing are indistinguishable. Networks with low number of hotspots show better performance. As the number of hotspots increases network latency tends to increase. It is shown that when the hotspot factor increases, performance of packet switching is better than that of wormhole switching. It is also shown that the location of hotspots affects network performance particularly with the oblivious routers since their achieved latencies proved to be more vulnerable to changes in the hotspot location. It is also shown that the smaller the size of the network the earlier network saturation occurs. Further, it is shown that the chaos router’s adaptivity is useful in this case. Finally, for tori, performance is not greatly affected by hotspot presence. This is mostly due to the symmetric nature of tori

    Performance analysis of wormhole routing in multicomputer interconnection networks

    Perhaps the most critical component in determining the ultimate performance potential of a multicomputer is its interconnection network, the hardware fabric supporting communication among individual processors. The message latency and throughput of such a network are affected by many factors of which topology, switching method, routing algorithm and traffic load are the most significant. In this context, the present study focuses on a performance analysis of k-ary n-cube networks employing wormhole switching, virtual channels and adaptive routing, a scenario of especial interest to current research. This project aims to build upon earlier work in two main ways: constructing new analytical models for k-ary n-cubes, and comparing the performance merits of cubes of different dimensionality. To this end, some important topological properties of k-ary n-cubes are explored initially; in particular, expressions are derived to calculate the number of nodes at/within a given distance from a chosen centre. These results are important in their own right but their primary significance here is to assist in the construction of new and more realistic analytical models of wormhole-routed k-ary n-cubes. An accurate analytical model for wormhole-routed k-ary n-cubes with adaptive routing and uniform traffic is then developed, incorporating the use of virtual channels and the effect of locality in the traffic pattern. New models are constructed for wormhole k-ary n-cubes, with the ability to simulate behaviour under adaptive routing and non-uniform communication workloads, such as hotspot traffic, matrix-transpose and digit-reversal permutation patterns. The models are equally applicable to unidirectional and bidirectional k-ary n-cubes and are significantly more realistic than any in use up to now. With this level of accuracy, the effect of each important network parameter on the overall network performance can be investigated in a more comprehensive manner than before. Finally, k-ary n-cubes of different dimensionality are compared using the new models. The comparison takes account of various traffic patterns and implementation costs, using both pin-out and bisection bandwidth as metrics. Networks with both normal and pipelined channels are considered. While previous similar studies have only taken account of network channel costs, our model incorporates router costs as well thus generating more realistic results. In fact the results of this work differ markedly from those yielded by earlier studies which assumed deterministic routing and uniform traffic, illustrating the importance of using accurate models to conduct such analyses

    Quarc: an architecture for efficient on-chip communication

    The exponential downscaling of the feature size has enforced a paradigm shift from computation-based design to communication-based design in system on chip development. Buses, the traditional communication architecture in systems on chip, are incapable of addressing the increasing bandwidth requirements of future large systems. Networks on chip have emerged as an interconnection architecture offering unique solutions to the technological and design issues related to communication in future systems on chip. The transition from buses as a shared medium to networks on chip as a segmented medium has given rise to new challenges in system on chip realm. By leveraging the shared nature of the communication medium, buses have been highly efficient in delivering multicast communication. The segmented nature of networks, however, inhibits the multicast messages to be delivered as efficiently by networks on chip. Relying on extensive research on multicast communication in parallel computers, several network on chip architectures have offered mechanisms to perform the operation, while conforming to resource constraints of the network on chip paradigm. Multicast communication in majority of these networks on chip is implemented by establishing a connection between source and all multicast destinations before the message transmission commences. Establishing the connections incurs an overhead and, therefore, is not desirable; in particular in latency sensitive services such as cache coherence. To address high performance multicast communication, this research presents Quarc, a novel network on chip architecture. The Quarc architecture targets an area-efficient, low power, high performance implementation. The thesis covers a detailed representation of the building blocks of the architecture, including topology, router and network interface. The cost and performance comparison of the Quarc architecture against other network on chip architectures reveals that the Quarc architecture is a highly efficient architecture. Moreover, the thesis introduces novel performance models of complex traffic patterns, including multicast and quality of service-aware communication

    Efficient processor allocation strategies for mesh-connected multicomputers

    Abstract Efficient processor allocation and job scheduling algorithms are critical if the full computational power of large-scale multicomputers is to be harnessed effectively. Processor allocation is responsible for selecting the set of processors on which parallel jobs are executed, whereas job scheduling is responsible for determining the order in which the jobs are executed. Many processor allocation strategies have been devised for mesh-connected multicomputers and these can be divided into two main categories: contiguous and non-contiguous. In contiguous allocation, jobs are allocated distinct contiguous processor sub-meshes for the duration of their execution. Such a strategy could lead to high processor fragmentation which degrades system performance in terms of, for example, the turnaround time and system utilisation. In non-contiguous allocation, a job can execute on multiple disjoint smaller sub-meshes rather than waiting until a single sub-mesh of the requested size and shape is available. Although non-contiguous allocation increases message contention inside the network, lifting the contiguity condition can reduce processor fragmentation and increase system utilisation. Processor fragmentation can be of two types: internal and external. The former occurs when more processors are allocated to a job than it requires while the latter occurs when there are free processors enough in number to satisfy another job request, but they are not allocated to it because they are not contiguous. A lot of efforts have been devoted to reducing fragmentation, and a number of contiguous allocation strategies have been devised to recognize complete sub-meshes during allocation. Most of these strategies have been suggested for 2D mesh-connected multicomputers. However, although the 3D mesh has been the underlying network topology for a number of important multicomputers, there has been relatively little activity with regard to designing similar strategies for such a network. The very few contiguous allocation strategies suggested for the 3D mesh achieve complete sub-mesh recognition ability only at the expense of a high allocation overhead (i.e., allocation and de-allocation time). Furthermore, the allocation overhead in the existing contiguous strategies often grows with system size. The main challenge is therefore to devise an efficient contiguous allocation strategy that can exhibit good performance (e.g., a low job turnaround time and high system utilisation) with a low allocation overhead. The first part of the research presents a new contiguous allocation strategy, referred to as Turning Busy List (TBL), for 3D mesh-connected multicomputers. The TBL strategy considers only those available free sub-meshes which border from the left of those already allocated sub-meshes or which have their left boundaries aligned with that of the whole mesh network. Moreover TBL uses an efficient scheme to facilitate the detection of such available sub-meshes while maintaining a low allocation overhead. This is achieved through maintaining a list of allocated sub-meshes in order to efficiently determine the processors that can form an allocation sub-mesh for a new allocation request. The new strategy is able to identify a free sub-mesh of the requested size as long as it exists in the mesh. Results from extensive simulations under various operating loads reveal that TBL manages to deliver competitive performance (i.e., low turnaround times and high system utilisation) with a much lower allocation overhead compared to other well-known existing strategies. Most existing non-contiguous allocation strategies that have been suggested for the mesh suffer from several problems that include internal fragmentation, external fragmentation, and message contention inside the network. Furthermore, the allocation of processors to job requests is not based on free contiguous sub-meshes in these existing strategies. The second part of this research proposes a new non-contiguous allocation strategy, referred to as Greedy Available Busy List (GABL) strategy that eliminates both internal and external fragmentation and alleviates the contention in the network. GABL combines the desirable features of both contiguous and non-contiguous allocation strategies as it adopts the contiguous allocation used in our TBL strategy. Moreover, GABL is flexible enough in that it could be applied to either the 2D or 3D mesh. However, for the sake of the present study, the new non-contiguous allocation strategy is discussed for the 2D mesh and compares its performance against that of well-known non-contiguous allocation strategies suggested for this network. One of the desirable features of GABL is that it can maintain a high degree of contiguity between processors compared to the previous allocation strategies. This, in turn, decreases the number of sub-meshes allocated to a job, and thus decreases message distances, resulting in a low inter-processor communication overhead. The performance analysis here indicates that the new proposed strategy has lower turnaround time than the previous non-contiguous allocation strategies for most considered cases. Moreover, in the presence of high message contention due to heavy network traffic, GABL exhibits superior performance in terms of the turnaround time over the previous contiguous and non-contiguous allocation strategies. Furthermore, GABL exhibits a high system utilisation as it manages to eliminate both internal and external fragmentation. The performance of many allocation strategies including the ones suggested above, has been evaluated under the assumption that job execution times follow an exponential distribution. However, many measurement studies have convincingly demonstrated that the execution times of certain computational applications are best characterized by heavy-tailed job execution times; that is, many jobs have short execution times and comparatively few have very long execution times. Motivated by this observation, the final part of this thesis reviews the performance of several contiguous allocation strategies, including TBL, in the context of heavy-tailed distributions. This research is the first to analyze the performance impact of heavy-tailed job execution times on the allocation strategies suggested for mesh-connected multicomputers. The results show that the performance of the contiguous allocation strategies degrades sharply when the distribution of job execution times is heavy-tailed. Further, adopting an appropriate scheduling strategy, such as Shortest-Service-Demand (SSD) as opposed to First-Come-First-Served (FCFS), can significantly reduce the detrimental effects of heavy-tailed distributions. Finally, while the new contiguous allocation strategy (TBL) is as good as the best competitor of the previous contiguous allocation strategies in terms of job turnaround time and system utilisation, it is substantially more efficient in terms of allocation overhead

    Analysis of wormhole routings in cayley graphs of permutation groups.

    Over a decade, a new class of switching technology, called wormhole routing, has been investigated in the multicomputer interconnection network field. Several classes of wormhole routing algorithms have been proposed. Most of the algorithms have been centered on the traditional binary hypercube, k-ary n-cube mesh, and torus networks. In the design of a wormhole routing algorithm, deadlock avoidance scheme is the main concern. Recently, new classes of networks called Cayley graphs of permutation groups are considered very promising alternatives. Although proposed Cayley networks have superior topological properties over the traditional network topologies, the design of the deadlock-free wormhole routing algorithm in these networks is not simple. In this dissertation, we investigate deadlock free wormhole routing algorithms in the several classes of Cayley networks, such as complete-transposition and star networks. We evaluate several classes of routing algorithms on these networks, and compare the performance of each algorithm to the simulation study. Also, the performances of these networks are compared to the traditional networks. Through extensive simulation we found that adaptive algorithm outperformed deterministic algorithm in general with more virtual channels. On the network performance comparison, the complete transposition network showed the best performance among the similar sized networks, and the binary hypercube performed better compared to the star graph
