On Optimal Turbo Decoding of Wideband MIMO-OFDM Systems Under Imperfect Channel State Information

We consider the decoding of bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) applied to both multiband and MIMO OFDM systems for typical scenarios where only a noisy (possibly very bad) estimate of the channel is provided by sending a limited number of pilot symbols. First, by using a Bayesian framework involving the channel a posteriori density, we adopt a practical decoding metric that is robust to the presence of channel estimation errors. Then this metric is used in the demapping part of BICM multiband and MIMO OFDM receivers. We also compare our results with the performance of a mismatched decoder that replaces the channel by its estimate in the decoding metric. Numerical results over both realistic UWB and theoretical Rayleigh fading channels show that the proposed method provides significant gain in terms of bit error rate compared to the classical mismatched detector, without introducing any additional complexity

Cross-layer Resource Allocation Scheme for Multi-band High Rate UWB Systems

In this paper, we investigate the use of a cross-layer allocation mechanism for the high-rate ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, through the cross-layer approach that provides a new service differentiation approach to the fully distributed UWB systems, we support traffic with quality of service (QoS) guarantee in a multi-user context. Second, we exploit the effective SINR method that represents the characteristics of multiple sub-carrier SINRs in the multi-band WiMedia solution proposed for UWB systems, in order to provide the channel state information needed for the multi-user sub-band allocation. This new approach improves the system performance and optimizes the spectrum utilization with a low cost data exchange between the different users while guaranteeing the required QoS. In addition, this new approach solves the problem of the cohabitation of more than three users in the same WiMedia channel

Interference Mitigation for coded MB-OFDM UWB

Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) standard for high rate Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless communication in the 3.1– 10.6 GHz band. The performance of MB-OFDM is impacted by interference from IEEE 802.16 WiMAX systems operating in the licensed 3.5 GHz band. Motivated by recent work showing the approximately Gaussian nature of the WiMAX interference to MB-OFDM, we propose a simple two-stage interference mitigation technique for coded MB-OFDM transmissions according to the ECMA-368 standard, consisting of interference spectrum estimation during silent periods followed by appropriate bit metric weighting during Viterbi decoding. We compare parametric and non-parametric spectrum estimation techniques for coded MB-OFDM transmissions and WiMAX interference for various scenarios of interest. The proposed two-stage interference mitigation technique is shown to be highly effective at mitigating the impact of WiMAX interference

A General Framework for Analyzing, Characterizing, and Implementing Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Signals

Fourth generation (4G) communications will support many capabilities while providing universal, high speed access. One potential enabler for these capabilities is software defined radio (SDR). When controlled by cognitive radio (CR) principles, the required waveform diversity is achieved via a synergistic union called CR-based SDR. Research is rapidly progressing in SDR hardware and software venues, but current CR-based SDR research lacks the theoretical foundation and analytic framework to permit efficient implementation. This limitation is addressed here by introducing a general framework for analyzing, characterizing, and implementing spectrally modulated, spectrally encoded (SMSE) signals within CR-based SDR architectures. Given orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a 4G candidate signal, OFDM-based signals are collectively classified as SMSE since modulation and encoding are spectrally applied. The proposed framework provides analytic commonality and unification of SMSE signals. Applicability is first shown for candidate 4G signals, and resultant analytic expressions agree with published results. Implementability is then demonstrated in multiple coexistence scenarios via modeling and simulation to reinforce practical utility

A Novel Frequency Synchronization Algorithm and its Cramer Rao Bound in Practical UWB Environment for MB-OFDM Systems

    Get PDF
This paper presents an efficient time-domain coarse frequency offset (FO) synchronizer (TCFS) for multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) systems effective for practical ultra-wideband (UWB) environment. The proposed algorithm derives its estimates based on phase differences in the received subcarrier signals of several successive OFDM symbols in the preamble. We consider different carrier FOs and different channel responses in different bands to keep the analysis and simulation compatible for practical multiband UWB scenario. Performance of the algorithm is studied by means of bit error rate (BER) analysis of MBOFDM system. We derive the Cramer Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the estimation error variance and compare it with the simulated error variance both in additive white Gaussian noise and UWB channel model (CM) environments, CM1-CM4. Both analysis and simulation show that TCFS can estimate coarse carrier FO more efficiently in UWB fading channels for MB-OFDM applications compared to the other reported results in literature. Also, computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is analyzed for its usability evaluation
