    A unified race algorithm for offline parameter tuning

    This paper proposes uRace, a unified race algorithm for efficient offline parameter tuning of deterministic algorithms. We build on the similarity between a stochastic simulation environment and offline tuning of deterministic algorithms, where the stochastic element in the latter is the unknown problem instance given to the algorithm. Inspired by techniques from the simulation optimization literature, uRace enforces fair comparisons among parameter configurations by evaluating their performance on the same training instances. It relies on rapid statistical elimination of inferior parameter configurations and an increasingly localized search of the parameter space to quickly identify good parameter settings. We empirically evaluate uRace by applying it to a parameterized algorithmic framework for loading problems at ORTEC, a global provider of software solutions for complex decision-making problems, and obtain competitive results on a set of practical problem instances from one of the world's largest multinationals in consumer packaged goods

    Containership Load Planning with Crane Operations

    Since the start of the containerization revolution in 1950's, not only the TEU capacity of the vessels has been increasing constantly, but also the number of fully cellular container ships has expanded substantially. Because of the tense competition among ports in recent years, improving the operational efficiency of ports has become an important issue in containership operations. Arrangement of containers both within the container terminal and on the containership play an important role in determining the berthing time. The berthing time of a containership is mainly composed of the unloading and loading time of containers. Containers in a containership are stored in stacks, making a container directly accessible only if it is on the top of one stack. The task of determining a good container arrangement to minimize the number of re-handlings while maintaining the ship's stability over several ports is called stowage planning, which is an everyday problem solved by ship planners. The horizontal distribution of the containers over the bays affects crane utilization and overall ship berthing time. In order to increase the terminal productivity and reduce the turnaround time, the stowage planning must conform to the berth design. Given the configuration of berths and cranes at each visiting port, the stowage planning must take into account the utilization of quay cranes as well as the reduction of unnecessary shifts to minimize the total time at all ports over the voyage. This dissertation introduces an optimization model to solve the stowage planning problem with crane utilization considerations. The optimization model covers a wide range of operational and structural constraints for containership load planning. In order to solve real-size problems, a meta-heuristic approach based on genetic algorithms is designed and implemented which embeds a crane split approximation routine. The genetic encoding is ultra-compact and represents grouping, sorting and assignment strategies that might be applied to form the stowage pattern. The evaluation procedure accounts for technical specification of the cranes as well as the crane split. Numerical results show that timely solution for ultra large size containerships can be obtained under different scenarios

    Résolution de problèmes de tournées avec synchronisation : applications au cas multi-échelons et au cross-docking

    Transportation systems are more and more interconnected, this has lead to a new kind of constraints, called synchronization constraints, in vehicle routing problems. In this thesis, we study two cases in which this type of constraints arises. First, we propose a heuristic method for a two-echelon problem arising in City Logistics. Second, we study the integration of a cross-dockin pickup and delivery vehicle routing problems. To that end we propose a matheuristic for the vehicule routing problem with cross-docking, and we propose an extension of this problem that integrates specific resource synchonization constraints arising at the cross-dock. A method for a 3D loading problem is also presented.L’interconnexion croissante dans les systèmes de transports a conduit à la modélisation de nouvelles contraintes, dites contraintes de synchronisation, dans les problèmes de tournées de véhicules. Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons à deux cas dans lesquels ce type de problématiques apparaît. Dans un premier temps, nous proposons une méthode heuristique pour un problème à deux échelons rencontré pour la distribution de marchandises en ville. Dans un second temps, nous étudions l’intégration d’un cross-dock dans des tournées de collectes et livraisons. Une première contribution à ce sujet concerne le problème de tournées de véhicules avec cross-docking, et une seconde contribution intègre, en plus, des contraintes de ressources au cross-dock dans le problème de routage. Une méthode pour un problème de chargement 3D, étudié lors d’un stage doctoral en entreprise, est également présentée

    A multimodal network flow problem with product quality preservation, transshipment, and asset management

    In this paper, we present an optimization model for a transportation planning problem with multiple transportation modes, highly perishable products, demand and supply dynamics, and management of the reusable transport units (RTIs). Such a problem arises in the European horticultural chain, for example. As a result of geographic dispersion of production and market, a reliable transportation solutions ensures long-term success in the European market. The model is an extension to the network ow problem. We integrate dynamic allocation, ow, and repositioning of the RTIs in order to nd the trade-o between quality requirements and operational considerations and costs.     An Adaptive Iterated Local Search for the Mixed Capacitated General Routing Problem

    We study the mixed capacitated general routing problem (MCGRP) in which a fleet of capacitated vehicles has to serve a set of requests by traversing a mixed weighted graph. The requests may be located on nodes, edges, and arcs. The problem has theoretical interest because it is a generalization of the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP), the capacitated arc routing problem (CARP), and the general routing problem. It is also of great practical interest since it is often a more accurate model for real-world cases than its widely studied specializations, particularly for so-called street routing applications. Examples are urban waste collection, snow removal, and newspaper delivery. We propose a new iterated local search metaheuristic for the problem that also includes vital mechanisms from adaptive large neighborhood search combined with further intensification through local search. The method utilizes selected, tailored, and novel local search and large neighborhood search operators, as well as a new local search strategy. Computational experiments show that the proposed metaheuristic is highly effective on five published benchmarks for the MCGRP. The metaheuristic yields excellent results also on seven standard CARP data sets, and good results on four well-known CVRP benchmarks, including improvement of the best known upper bound for one instance

    Applying Evolutionary Algorithms Successfully: A Guide Gained from Real-world Applications

    Metaheuristics (MHs) in general and Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) in particular are well known tools for successful optimization of difficult problems. But when is their application meaningful and how does one approach such a project as a novice? How do you avoid beginner\u27s mistakes or use the design possibilities of a metaheuristic search as efficiently as possible? This paper tries to give answers to these questions based on 30 years of research and application of the Evolutionary Algorithm GLEAM and its memetic extension HyGLEAM. Most of the experience gathered and discussed here can also be applied to the use of other metaheuristics such as ant algorithms or particle swarm optimization. This paper addresses users with basic knowledge of MHs in general and EAs in particular who want to apply them in an optimization project. For this purpose, a number of questions that arise in the course of such a project are addressed. At the end, some non-technical project management issues are discussed, whose importance for project success is often underestimated
