    Efficient layering for high speed communication: the MPI over Fast Messages (FM) experience

    We describe our experience of designing, implementing, and evaluating two generations of high performance communication libraries, Fast Messages (FM) for Myrinet. In FM 1, we designed a simple interface and provided guarantees of reliable and in-order delivery, and flow control. While this was a significant improvement over previous systems, it was not enough. Layering MPI atop FM 1 showed that only about 35 % of the FM 1 bandwidth could be delivered to higher level communication APIs. Our second generation communication layer, FM 2, addresses the identified problems, providing gather-scatter, interlayer scheduling, receiver flow control, as well as some convenient API features which simplify programming. FM 2 can deliver 55–95 % to higher level APIs such as MPI. This is especially impressive as the absolute bandwidths delivered have increased over fourfold to 90 MB/s.     Space-Based Information Infrastructure Architecture for Broadband Services

    This study addressed four tasks: (1) identify satellite-addressable information infrastructure markets; (2) perform network analysis for space-based information infrastructure; (3) develop conceptual architectures; and (4) economic assessment of architectures. The report concludes that satellites will have a major role in the national and global information infrastructure, requiring seamless integration between terrestrial and satellite networks. The proposed LEO, MEO, and GEO satellite systems have satellite characteristics that vary widely. They include delay, delay variations, poorer link quality and beam/satellite handover. The barriers against seamless interoperability between satellite and terrestrial networks are discussed. These barriers are the lack of compatible parameters, standards and protocols, which are presently being evaluated and reduced

    Dynamic grooming in IP over WDM networks: A study with realistic traffic based on GANCLES simulation package

    Abstract — Dynamic grooming capabilities lies at the hearth of many envisaged scenarios for IP over Optical networks, but studies on its performance are still in their infancy. This work addresses two fundamental aspects of the problem. First of all it presents a novel tool for the study of IP over Optical networks. The tool, freely available on-line, is a network level simulator named GANCLES that includes several innovative features allowing the study of realistic scenarios in IP over Optical networking, making it an ideal tool for Traffic Engineering purposes.
