    Analysis and performance improvement of consumer-grade millimeter wave wireless networks

    Millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks are one of the main key components in next cellular and WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks). mmWave networks are capable of providing multi gigabit-per-second rates with very directional low-interference and high spatial reuse links. In 2013, the first 60 GHz wireless solution for WLAN appeared in the market. These were wireless docking stations under theWiGig protocol. Today, in 2019, 60 GHz communications have gained importance with the IEEE 802.11ad amendment with different products on the market, including routers, laptops and wireless Ethernet solutions. More importantly, mmWave networks are going to be used in next generation cellular networks, where smartphones will be using the 28 GHz band. For backbone links, 60 GHz communications have been proposed due to its higher directionality and unlicensed use. This thesis fits in this frame of constant development of themmWave bands to meet the needs of latency and throughput that will be necessary to support future communications. In this thesis, we first characterize the cost-effective design of COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) 60 GHz devices and later we improve their two main weaknesses, which are their low link distance and their non-ideal spatial reuse. It is critical to take into consideration the cost-effective design of COTS devices when designing networking mechanisms. This is why in this thesis we do the first-of-its-kind COTS analysis of 60 GHz devices, studying the D5000 WiGig Docking station and the TP-Link Talon IEEE 802.11ad router. We include static measurements such as the synthesized beam patterns of these devices or an analysis of the area-wide coverage that these devices can fulfill. We perform a spatial reuse analysis and study the performance of these devices under user mobility, showing how robust the link can be under user movement. We also study the feasibility of having flying mmWave links. We mount a 60 GHz COTS device into a drone and perform different measurement campaigns. In this first analysis, we see that these 60 GHz devices have a large performance gap for the achieved communication range as well as a very low spatial reuse. However, they are still suitable for low density WLANs and for next generation aerial micro cell stations. Seeing that these COTS devices are not as directional as literature suggests, we analyze how channels are not as frequency stable as expected due to the large amount of reflected signals. Ideally, frequency selective techniques could be used in these frequency selective channels in order to enlarge the range of these 60 GHz devices. To validate this, we measure real-world 60 GHz indoor channels with a bandwidth of 2 GHz and study their behavior with respect to techniques such as bitloading, subcarrier switch-off, and waterfilling. To this end, we consider a Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) channel as defined in the IEEE 802.11ad standard and show that in point of fact, these techniques are highly beneficial in mmWave networks allowing for a range extension of up to 50%, equivalent to power savings of up to 7 dB. In order to increase the very limited spatial reuse of these wireless networks, we propose a centralized system that allows the network to carry out the beam training process not only to maximize power but also taking into account other stations in order to minimize interference. This system is designed to work with unmodified clients.     Simultaneous Positioning and Communications: Hybrid Radio Architecture, Estimation Techniques, and Experimental Validation

    abstract: Limited spectral access motivates technologies that adapt to diminishing resources and increasingly cluttered environments. A joint positioning-communications system is designed and implemented on \acf{COTS} hardware. This system enables simultaneous positioning of, and communications between, nodes in a distributed network of base-stations and unmanned aerial systems (UASs). This technology offers extreme ranging precision (<< 5 cm) with minimal bandwidth (10 MHz), a secure communications link to protect against cyberattacks, a small form factor that enables integration into numerous platforms, and minimal resource consumption which supports high-density networks. The positioning and communications tasks are performed simultaneously with a single, co-use waveform, which efficiently utilizes limited resources and supports higher user densities. The positioning task uses a cooperative, point-to-point synchronization protocol to estimate the relative position and orientation of all users within the network. The communications task distributes positioning information between users and secures the positioning task against cyberattacks. This high-performance system is enabled by advanced time-of-arrival estimation techniques and a modern phase-accurate distributed coherence synchronization algorithm.     Taming and Leveraging Directionality and Blockage in Millimeter Wave Communications

    To cope with the challenge for high-rate data transmission, Millimeter Wave(mmWave) is one potential solution. The short wavelength unlatched the era of directional mobile communication. The semi-optical communication requires revolutionary thinking. To assist the research and evaluate various algorithms, we build a motion-sensitive mmWave testbed with two degrees of freedom for environmental sensing and general wireless communication.The first part of this thesis contains two approaches to maintain the connection in mmWave mobile communication. The first one seeks to solve the beam tracking problem using motion sensor within the mobile device. A tracking algorithm is given and integrated into the tracking protocol. Detailed experiments and numerical simulations compared several compensation schemes with optical benchmark and demonstrated the efficiency of overhead reduction. The second strategy attempts to mitigate intermittent connections during roaming is multi-connectivity. Taking advantage of properties of rateless erasure code, a fountain code type multi-connectivity mechanism is proposed to increase the link reliability with simplified backhaul mechanism. The simulation demonstrates the efficiency and robustness of our system design with a multi-link channel record.The second topic in this thesis explores various techniques in blockage mitigation. A fast hear-beat like channel with heavy blockage loss is identified in the mmWave Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) communication experiment due to the propeller blockage. These blockage patterns are detected through Holm\u27s procedure as a problem of multi-time series edge detection. To reduce the blockage effect, an adaptive modulation and coding scheme is designed. The simulation results show that it could greatly improve the throughput given appropriately predicted patterns. The last but not the least, the blockage of directional communication also appears as a blessing because the geometrical information and blockage event of ancillary signal paths can be utilized to predict the blockage timing for the current transmission path. A geometrical model and prediction algorithm are derived to resolve the blockage time and initiate active handovers. An experiment provides solid proof of multi-paths properties and the numeral simulation demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed algorithm

    Motion tracking problems in Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless networking

    The dissertation focuses on inferring various motion patterns of internet-of-things (IoT) devices, by leveraging inertial sensors embedded in these objects, as well as wireless signals emitted (or reflected) from them. For instance, we use a combination of GPS signals and inertial sensors on drones to precisely track its 3D orientation over time, ultimately improving safety against failures and crashes. In another application in sports analytics, we embed sensors and radios inside baseballs and cricket balls and compute their 3D trajectory and spin patterns, even when they move at extremely high speeds. In a third application for wireless networks, we explore the possibility of physically moving wireless infrastructure like Access Points and basestations on robots and drones for enhancing the network performance. While these are diverse applications in drones, sports analytics, and wireless networks, the common theme underlying the research is in the development of the core motion-related building blocks. Specifically, we emphasize the philosophy of "fusion of multi modal sensor data with application specific model” as the design principle for building the next generation of diverse IoT applications. To this end, we draw on theoretical techniques in wireless communication, signal processing, and statistics, but translate them to completely functional systems on real-world platforms

    Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems Technologies and Operations

    As the quarter-century mark in the 21st Century nears, new aviation-related equipment has come to the forefront, both to help us and to haunt us. (Coutu, 2020) This is particularly the case with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These vehicles have grown in popularity and accessible to everyone. Of different shapes and sizes, they are widely available for purchase at relatively low prices. They have moved from the backyard recreation status to important tools for the military, intelligence agencies, and corporate organizations. New practical applications such as military equipment and weaponry are announced on a regular basis – globally. (Coutu, 2020) Every country seems to be announcing steps forward in this bludgeoning field. In our successful 2nd edition of Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the Cyber Domain: Protecting USA’s Advanced Air Assets (Nichols, et al., 2019), the authors addressed three factors influencing UAS phenomena. First, unmanned aircraft technology has seen an economic explosion in production, sales, testing, specialized designs, and friendly / hostile usages of deployed UAS / UAVs / Drones. There is a huge global growing market and entrepreneurs know it. Second, hostile use of UAS is on the forefront of DoD defense and offensive planners. They are especially concerned with SWARM behavior. Movies like “Angel has Fallen,” where drones in a SWARM use facial recognition technology to kill USSS agents protecting POTUS, have built the lore of UAS and brought the problem forefront to DHS. Third, UAS technology was exploding. UAS and Counter- UAS developments in navigation, weapons, surveillance, data transfer, fuel cells, stealth, weight distribution, tactics, GPS / GNSS elements, SCADA protections, privacy invasions, terrorist uses, specialized software, and security protocols has exploded. (Nichols, et al., 2019) Our team has followed / tracked joint ventures between military and corporate entities and specialized labs to build UAS countermeasures. As authors, we felt compelled to address at least the edge of some of the new C-UAS developments. It was clear that we would be lucky if we could cover a few of – the more interesting and priority technology updates – all in the UNCLASSIFIED and OPEN sphere. Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems: Technologies and Operations is the companion textbook to our 2nd edition. The civilian market is interesting and entrepreneurial, but the military and intelligence markets are of concern because the US does NOT lead the pack in C-UAS technologies. China does. China continues to execute its UAS proliferation along the New Silk Road Sea / Land routes (NSRL). It has maintained a 7% growth in military spending each year to support its buildup. (Nichols, et al., 2019) [Chapter 21]. They continue to innovate and have recently improved a solution for UAS flight endurance issues with the development of advanced hydrogen fuel cell. (Nichols, et al., 2019) Reed and Trubetskoy presented a terrifying map of countries in the Middle East with armed drones and their manufacturing origin. Guess who? China. (A.B.
