    Range-enhanced packet classification to improve computational performance on field programmable gate array

    Multi-filed packet classification is a powerful classification engine that classifies input packets into different fields based on predefined rules. As the demand for the internet increases, efficient network routers can support many network features like quality of services (QoS), firewalls, security, multimedia communications, and virtual private networks. However, the traditional packet classification methods do not fulfill today’s network functionality and requirements efficiently. In this article, an efficient range enhanced packet classification (REPC) module is designed using a range bit-vector encoding method, which provides a unique design to store the precomputed values in memory. In addition, the REPC supports range to prefix features to match the packets to the corresponding header fields. The synthesis and implementation results of REPC are analyzed and tabulated in detail. The REPC module utilizes 3% slices on Artix-7 field programmable gate array (FPGA), works at 99.87 Gbps throughput with a latency of 3 clock cycles.     A Modular Approach to Adaptive Reactive Streaming Systems

    The latest generations of FPGA devices offer large resource counts that provide the headroom to implement large-scale and complex systems. However, there are increasing challenges for the designer, not just because of pure size and complexity, but also in harnessing effectively the flexibility and programmability of the FPGA. A central issue is the need to integrate modules from diverse sources to promote modular design and reuse. Further, the capability to perform dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR) of FPGA devices means that implemented systems can be made reconfigurable, allowing components to be changed during operation. However, use of DPR typically requires low-level planning of the system implementation, adding to the design challenge. This dissertation presents ReShape: a high-level approach for designing systems by interconnecting modules, which gives a ‘plug and play’ look and feel to the designer, is supported by tools that carry out implementation and verification functions, and is carried through to support system reconfiguration during operation. The emphasis is on the inter-module connections and abstracting the communication patterns that are typical between modules – for example, the streaming of data that is common in many FPGA-based systems, or the reading and writing of data to and from memory modules. ShapeUp is also presented as the static precursor to ReShape. In both, the details of wiring and signaling are hidden from view, via metadata associated with individual modules. ReShape allows system reconfiguration at the module level, by supporting type checking of replacement modules and by managing the overall system implementation, via metadata associated with its FPGA floorplan. The methodology and tools have been implemented in a prototype for a broad domain-specific setting – networking systems – and have been validated on real telecommunications design projects

    パケット・クラシファイアとは、コンピュータネットワークにおいてネットワーク機器に到着したパケットをグループに分類するメカリズムである。特定の処理のためにパケットを区別して分離する必要があるサービス、例えば、ファイアウォールやサービス品質などのカスタマイズネットワークサービスなどを提供するためにルータでのパケットを分類するのは極めて重要である。パケット分類に関するアルゴリズムがいくつかの研究で提案されている。分類の性能を向上するため、決定木、ヒューリスティックなどを利用した提案がある。しかし、その性能評価は主にハードウェア実装に基づいていたので、アルゴリズムの設計方法、データ構造などソフトウェルーターに適用できない恐れがある。近年、ネットワークプロトコル、ターゲット非依存という特徴をあるP4言語が開発された。P4言語は幅広いのデータプレーンをプログラミングできるように、ネットワークの基本機能に関する表現力豊かな文法設計されています。仮想ネットワーク機能(VNF)に対する研究が流行っている背景のなか、P4言語用いてソフトウェアにおけるパケット分類の実装を研究する必要がある。本研究では、今までネットワークのパケット分類に関するアルゴリズムがP4言語文法による実装を検討する。P4抽象転送モデル中で利用可能なプログラミングフローを議論し、パケット分類の改善に適しているデータ構造を示した。また、異なるアルゴリズムとデータ構造を用いて、P4ソースコードからコンパイルされたソフトウェアルーターの性能評価を行った。電気通信大学201

    Nn-X - a hardware accelerator for convolutional neural networks

    Convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) are hierarchical models of the mammalian visual cortex. These models have been increasingly used in computer vision to perform object recognition and full scene understanding. ConvNets consist of multiple layers that contain groups of artificial neurons, which are mathematical approximations of biological neurons. A ConvNet can consist of millions of neurons and require billions of computations to produce one output. ^ Currently, giant server farms are used to process information in real time. These supercomputers require a large amount of power and a constant link to the end-user. Low powered embedded systems are not able to run convolutional neural networks in real time. Thus, using these systems on mobile platforms or on platforms where a connection to an off-site server is not guaranteed, is unfeasible. ^ In this work we present nn-X — a scalable hardware architecture capable of processing ConvNets in real time. We evaluate the performance and power consumption of the aforementioned architecture and compare it with systems typically used to process convolutional neural networks. Our system is prototyped on the Xilinx Zynq XC7Z045 device. On this device, we are able to achieve a peak performance of 227 GOPs/s, a measured performance of up to 200 GOPs/s while consuming less than 3 W of power. This translates to a performance per power improvement of up to 10 times that of conventional embedded systems and up to 25 times that of performance systems like desktops and GPUs

    System-on-Chip Packet Processor for an Experimental Network Services Platform

    As the focus of networking research shifts from raw performance to the delivery of advanced network services, there is a growing need for open-platform systems for extensible networking research. The Applied Research Laboratory at Washington University in Saint Louis has developed a flexible Network Services Platform (NSP) to meet this need. The NSP provides an extensible platform for prototyping next-generation network services and applications. This paper describes the design of a system-on-chip Packet Processor for the NSP which performs all core packet processing functions including segmentation and reassembly, packet classification, route lookup, and queue management. Targeted to a commercial configurable logic device, the system is designed to support gigabit links and switch fabrics with a 2:1 speed advantage. We provide resource consumption results for each component of the Packet Processor design
