Fixed-Mobile Convergence in the 5G era: From Hybrid Access to Converged Core
The availability of different paths to communicate to a user or device
introduces several benefits, from boosting enduser performance to improving
network utilization. Hybrid access is a first step in enabling convergence of
mobile and fixed networks, however, despite traffic optimization, this approach
is limited as fixed and mobile are still two separate core networks
inter-connected through an aggregation point. On the road to 5G networks, the
design trend is moving towards an aggregated network, where different access
technologies share a common anchor point in the core. This enables further
network optimization in addition to hybrid access, examples are userspecific
policies for aggregation and improved traffic balancing across different
accesses according to user, network, and service context. This paper aims to
discuss the ongoing work around hybrid access and network convergence by
Broadband Forum and 3GPP. We present some testbed results on hybrid access and
analyze some primary performance indicators such as achievable data rates, link
utilization for aggregated traffic and session setup latency. We finally
discuss the future directions for network convergence to enable future
scenarios with enhanced configuration capabilities for fixed and mobile
convergence.Comment: to appear in IEEE Networ
Transport of video over partial order connections
A Partial Order and partial reliable Connection (POC) is an end-to-end transport connection authorized to deliver objects in an order that can differ from the transmitted one. Such a connection is also authorized to lose some objects. The POC concept is motivated by the fact that heterogeneous best-effort networks such as Internet are plagued by unordered delivery of packets and losses, which tax the performances of current applications and protocols. It has been shown, in several research works, that out of order delivery is able to alleviate (with respect to CO service) the use of end systemsâ communication resources. In this paper, the efficiency of out-of-sequence delivery on MPEG video streams processing is studied. Firstly, the transport constraints (in terms of order and reliability) that can be relaxed by MPEG video decoders, for improving video transport, are detailed. Then, we analyze the performance gain induced by this approach in terms of blocking times and recovered errors. We demonstrate that POC connections fill not only the conceptual gap between TCP and UDP but also provide real performance improvements for the transport of multimedia streams such MPEG video
Wireless Sensor Network transport protocol: A critical review
The transport protocols for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) play vital role in achieving the high performance together with longevity of the network. The researchers are continuously contributing in developing new transport layer protocols based on different principles and architectures enabling different combinations of technical features. The uniqueness of each new protocol more or less lies in these functional features, which can be commonly classified based on their proficiencies in fulfilling congestion control, reliability support, and prioritization. The performance of these protocols has been evaluated using dissimilar set of experimental/simulation parameters, thus there is no well defined benchmark for experimental/simulation settings. The researchers working in this area have to compare the performance of the new protocol with the existing protocols to prove that new protocol is better. However, one of the major challenges faced by the researchers is investigating the performance of all the existing protocols, which have been tested in different simulation environments. This leads the significance of having a well-defined benchmark for the experimental/simulation settings. If the future researchers simulate their protocols according to a standard set of simulation/experimental settings, the performance of those protocols can be directly compared with each other just using the published simulation results. This article offers a twofold contribution to support researchers working in the area of WSN transport protocol design. First, we extensively review the technical features of existing transport protocols and suggest a generic framework for a WSN transport protocol, which offers a strong groundwork for the new researchers to identify the open research issues. Second we analyse the experimental settings, focused application areas and the addressed performance criteria of existing protocols; thus suggest a benchmark of experimental/simulation settings for evaluating prospective transport protocols

Heterogeneous Cloud Systems Based on Broadband Embedded Computing
Computing systems continue to evolve from homogeneous systems of commodity-based servers within a single data-center towards modern Cloud systems that consist of numerous data-center clusters virtualized at the infrastructure and application layers to provide scalable, cost-effective and elastic services to devices connected over the Internet. There is an emerging trend towards heterogeneous Cloud systems driven from growth in wired as well as wireless devices that incorporate the potential of millions, and soon billions, of embedded devices enabling new forms of computation and service delivery. Service providers such as broadband cable operators continue to contribute towards this expansion with growing Cloud system infrastructures combined with deployments of increasingly powerful embedded devices across broadband networks. Broadband networks enable access to service provider Cloud data-centers and the Internet from numerous devices. These include home computers, smart-phones, tablets, game-consoles, sensor-networks, and set-top box devices. With these trends in mind, I propose the concept of broadband embedded computing as the utilization of a broadband network of embedded devices for collective computation in conjunction with centralized Cloud infrastructures. I claim that this form of distributed computing results in a new class of heterogeneous Cloud systems, service delivery and application enablement. To support these claims, I present a collection of research contributions in adapting distributed software platforms that include MPI and MapReduce to support simultaneous application execution across centralized data-center blade servers and resource-constrained embedded devices. Leveraging these contributions, I develop two complete prototype system implementations to demonstrate an architecture for heterogeneous Cloud systems based on broadband embedded computing. Each system is validated by executing experiments with applications taken from bioinformatics and image processing as well as communication and computational benchmarks. This vision, however, is not without challenges. The questions on how to adapt standard distributed computing paradigms such as MPI and MapReduce for implementation on potentially resource-constrained embedded devices, and how to adapt cluster computing runtime environments to enable heterogeneous process execution across millions of devices remain open-ended. This dissertation presents methods to begin addressing these open-ended questions through the development and testing of both experimental broadband embedded computing systems and in-depth characterization of broadband network behavior. I present experimental results and comparative analysis that offer potential solutions for optimal scalability and performance for constructing broadband embedded computing systems. I also present a number of contributions enabling practical implementation of both heterogeneous Cloud systems and novel application services based on broadband embedded computing
TCP smart framing: a segmentation algorithm to reduce TCP latency
TCP Smart Framing, or TCP-SF for short, enables the Fast Retransmit/Recovery algorithms even when the congestion window is small. Without modifying the TCP congestion control based on the additive-increase/multiplicative-decrease paradigm, TCP-SF adopts a novel segmentation algorithm: while Classic TCP always tries to send full-sized segments, a TCP-SF source adopts a more flexible segmentation algorithm to try and always have a number of in-flight segments larger than 3 so as to enable Fast Recovery. We motivate this choice by real traffic measurements, which indicate that today's traffic is populated by short-lived flows, whose only means to recover from a packet loss is by triggering a Retransmission Timeout. The key idea of TCP-SF can be implemented on top of any TCP flavor, from Tahoe to SACK, and requires modifications to the server TCP stack only, and can be easily coupled with recent TCP enhancements. The performance of the proposed TCP modification were studied by means of simulations, live measurements and an analytical model. In addition, the analytical model we have devised has a general scope, making it a valid tool for TCP performance evaluation in the small window region. Improvements are remarkable under several buffer management schemes, and maximized by byte-oriented schemes
VoIP Call Admission Control in WLANs in Presence of Elastic Traffic
VoIP service over WLAN networks is a promising alternative to provide mobile voice communications. However, several performance problems appear due to i) heavy protocol overheads, ii) unfairness and asymmetry between the uplink and downlink flows, and iii) the coexistence with other traffic flows. This paper addresses the performance of VoIP communications with simultaneous presence of bidirectional TCP traffic, and shows how the presence of elastic flows drastically reduces the capacity of the system. To solve this limitation a simple solution is proposed using an adaptive Admission and Rate Control algorithm which tunes the BEB (Binary Exponential Backoff) parameters. Analytical results are obtained by using an IEEE 802.11e user centric queuing model based on a bulk service M=G[1;B]=1=K queue, which is able to capture the main dynamics of the EDCA-based traffic differentiation parameters (AIFS, BEB and TXOP). The results show that the improvement achieved by our scheme on the overall VoIP performance is significant
