    Vibration suppression in multi-body systems by means of disturbance filter design methods

    This paper addresses the problem of interaction in mechanical multi-body systems and shows that subsystem interaction can be considerably minimized while increasing performance if an efficient disturbance model is used. In order to illustrate the advantage of the proposed intelligent disturbance filter, two linear model based techniques are considered: IMC and the model based predictive (MPC) approach. As an illustrative example, multivariable mass-spring-damper and quarter car systems are presented. An adaptation mechanism is introduced to account for linear parameter varying LPV conditions. In this paper we show that, even if the IMC control strategy was not designed for MIMO systems, if a proper filter is used, IMC can successfully deal with disturbance rejection in a multivariable system, and the results obtained are comparable with those obtained by a MIMO predictive control approach. The results suggest that both methods perform equally well, with similar numerical complexity and implementation effort

    Iterative Nonlinear Control of a Semibatch Reactor. Stability Analysis

    This paper presents the application of Iterative Nonlinear Model Predictive Control, INMPC, to a semibatch chemical reactor. The proposed control approach is derived from a model-based predictive control formulation which takes advantage of the repetitive nature of batch processes. The proposed controller combines the good qualities of Model Predictive Control (MPC) with the possibility of learning from past batches, that is the base of Iterative Control. It uses a nonlinear model and a quadratic objective function that is optimized in order to obtain the control law. A stability proof with unitary control horizon is given for nonlinear plants that are affine in control and have linear output map. The controller shows capabilities to learn the optimal trajectory after a few iterations, giving a better fit than a linear non-iterative MPC controller. The controller has applications in repetitive disturbance rejection, because they do not modify the model for control purposes.     Robust control of ill-conditioned plants: high-purity distillation

    Using a high-purity distillation column as an example, the physical reason for the poor conditioning and its implications on control system design and performance are explained. It is shown that an acceptable performance/robustness tradeoff cannot be obtained by simple loop-shaping techniques (using singular values) and that a good understanding of the model uncertainty is essential for robust control system design. Physically motivated uncertainty descriptions (actuator uncertainties) are translated into the H∞/structured singular value framework, which is demonstrated to be a powerful tool to analyze and understand the complex phenomena

    Closed-form solutions for linear regulator design of mechanical systems including optimal weighting matrix selection

    Vibration in modern structural and mechanical systems can be reduced in amplitude by increasing stiffness, redistributing stiffness and mass, and/or adding damping if design techniques are available to do so. Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) theory in modern multivariable control design, attacks the general dissipative elastic system design problem in a global formulation. The optimal design, however, allows electronic connections and phase relations which are not physically practical or possible in passive structural-mechanical devices. The restriction of LQR solutions (to the Algebraic Riccati Equation) to design spaces which can be implemented as passive structural members and/or dampers is addressed. A general closed-form solution to the optimal free-decay control problem is presented which is tailored for structural-mechanical system. The solution includes, as subsets, special cases such as the Rayleigh Dissipation Function and total energy. Weighting matrix selection is a constrained choice among several parameters to obtain desired physical relationships. The closed-form solution is also applicable to active control design for systems where perfect, collocated actuator-sensor pairs exist

    Algorithms for computing the multivariable stability margin

    Stability margin for multiloop flight control systems has become a critical issue, especially in highly maneuverable aircraft designs where there are inherent strong cross-couplings between the various feedback control loops. To cope with this issue, we have developed computer algorithms based on non-differentiable optimization theory. These algorithms have been developed for computing the Multivariable Stability Margin (MSM). The MSM of a dynamical system is the size of the smallest structured perturbation in component dynamics that will destabilize the system. These algorithms have been coded and appear to be reliable. As illustrated by examples, they provide the basis for evaluating the robustness and performance of flight control systems

    Learning for Advanced Motion Control

    Iterative Learning Control (ILC) can achieve perfect tracking performance for mechatronic systems. The aim of this paper is to present an ILC design tutorial for industrial mechatronic systems. First, a preliminary analysis reveals the potential performance improvement of ILC prior to its actual implementation. Second, a frequency domain approach is presented, where fast learning is achieved through noncausal model inversion, and safe and robust learning is achieved by employing a contraction mapping theorem in conjunction with nonparametric frequency response functions. The approach is demonstrated on a desktop printer. Finally, a detailed analysis of industrial motion systems leads to several shortcomings that obstruct the widespread implementation of ILC algorithms.     Robust multivariable controller design for flexible spacecraft

    Large, flexible spacecraft are typically characterized by a large number of significant elastic modes with very small inherent damping, low, closely spaced natural frequencies, and the lack of accurate knowledge of the structural parameters. Summarized here is some recent research on the design of robust controllers for such spacecraft, which will maintain stability, and possible performance, despite these problems. Two types of controllers are considered, the first being the linear-quadratic-Gaussian-(LQG)-type. The second type utilizes output feedback using collocated sensors and actuators. The problem of designing robust LQG-type controllers using the frequency domain loop transfer recovery (LTR) method is considered, and the method is applied to a large antenna model. Analytical results regarding the regions of stability for LQG-type controllers in the presence of actuator nonlinearities are also presented. The results obtained for the large antenna indicate that the LQG/LTR method is a promising approach for control system design for flexible spacecraft. For the second type of controllers (collocated controllers), it is proved that the stability is maintained in the presence of certain commonly encountered nonlinearities and first-order actuator dynamics. These results indicate that collocated controllers are good candidates for robust control in situations where model errors are large

    A Unified Framework for the Study of Anti-Windup Designs

    We present a unified framework for the study of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems subject to control input nonlinearities. The framework is based on the following two-step design paradigm: "Design the linear controller ignoring control input nonlinearities and then add anti-windup bumpless transfer (AWBT) compensation to minimize the adverse eflects of any control input nonlinearities on closed loop performance". The resulting AWBT compensation is applicable to multivariable controllers of arbitrary structure and order. All known LTI anti-windup and/or bumpless transfer compensation schemes are shown to be special cases of this framework. It is shown how this framework can handle standard issues such as the analysis of stability and performance with or without uncertainties in the plant model. The actual analysis of stability and performance, and robustness issues are problems in their own right and hence not detailed here. The main result is the unification of existing schemes for AWBT compensation under a general framework
