    Medical image synthesis using generative adversarial networks: towards photo-realistic image synthesis

    This proposed work addresses the photo-realism for synthetic images. We introduced a modified generative adversarial network: StencilGAN. It is a perceptually-aware generative adversarial network that synthesizes images based on overlaid labelled masks. This technique can be a prominent solution for the scarcity of the resources in the healthcare sector

    Variational image fusion

    The main goal of this work is the fusion of multiple images to a single composite that offers more information than the individual input images. We approach those fusion tasks within a variational framework. First, we present iterative schemes that are well-suited for such variational problems and related tasks. They lead to efficient algorithms that are simple to implement and well-parallelisable. Next, we design a general fusion technique that aims for an image with optimal local contrast. This is the key for a versatile method that performs well in many application areas such as multispectral imaging, decolourisation, and exposure fusion. To handle motion within an exposure set, we present the following two-step approach: First, we introduce the complete rank transform to design an optic flow approach that is robust against severe illumination changes. Second, we eliminate remaining misalignments by means of brightness transfer functions that relate the brightness values between frames. Additional knowledge about the exposure set enables us to propose the first fully coupled method that jointly computes an aligned high dynamic range image and dense displacement fields. Finally, we present a technique that infers depth information from differently focused images. In this context, we additionally introduce a novel second order regulariser that adapts to the image structure in an anisotropic way.Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist die Fusion mehrerer Bilder zu einem Einzelbild, das mehr Informationen bietet als die einzelnen Eingangsbilder. Wir verwirklichen diese Fusionsaufgaben in einem variationellen Rahmen. Zunächst präsentieren wir iterative Schemata, die sich gut für solche variationellen Probleme und verwandte Aufgaben eignen. Danach entwerfen wir eine Fusionstechnik, die ein Bild mit optimalem lokalen Kontrast anstrebt. Dies ist der Schlüssel für eine vielseitige Methode, die gute Ergebnisse für zahlreiche Anwendungsbereiche wie Multispektralaufnahmen, Bildentfärbung oder Belichtungsreihenfusion liefert. Um Bewegungen in einer Belichtungsreihe zu handhaben, präsentieren wir folgenden Zweischrittansatz: Zuerst stellen wir die komplette Rangtransformation vor, um eine optische Flussmethode zu entwerfen, die robust gegenüber starken Beleuchtungsänderungen ist. Dann eliminieren wir verbleibende Registrierungsfehler mit der Helligkeitstransferfunktion, welche die Helligkeitswerte zwischen Bildern in Beziehung setzt. Zusätzliches Wissen über die Belichtungsreihe ermöglicht uns, die erste vollständig gekoppelte Methode vorzustellen, die gemeinsam ein registriertes Hochkontrastbild sowie dichte Bewegungsfelder berechnet. Final präsentieren wir eine Technik, die von unterschiedlich fokussierten Bildern Tiefeninformation ableitet.     Digital design optimisation: new methods and tools for design and manufacturing of architectural objects

    Tese de doutoramento em Arquitetura e TecnologiaThe integration in the design process of high-level objectives, such as those requirements directly related to functional performance and lightness or the efficient use of materials, is especially difficult and can no longer be directly and intuitively perceived by the designer. This is particularly true in the conceptual phase of a design process. Methods and design tools that take in account personal preference and cultural acceptance, and can combine the interactive behavior inherent to conceptual designing with the formal rigor of optimisation are therefore desirable. The aim of the work presented in this dissertation is to develop and test a method that could be employed to model and manage the design process individually, adapted to a particular design problem and along with the personal preferences of the designer. The method is part of a digital design process where simulation and analysis does not only support the project development process, but interacts and contributes with novel proposals, promotes a more creative exploration of the solution space and aims to integrate computational models in the reasoning process and the activities of the designer during the complete design process A digital design process allows for integration of simulation and analysis software right in the beginning of the project, but it will be the task of the designer to build his own software construct combining all necessary software programs with the intent to introduce optimisation efficiently and goal orientated into the design process. In this thesis a design method is presented based on a software construct combines parametric design with evolutionary principles with the intent to maximise explorative search in an iterative design process. This application consists of a loose combination of commercially available software programs and property scripts united towards a common goal. vi The ability of this method to interactively assist the designer during the design process is demonstrated and applied to the conceptual design of several case studies, in the form of shading devices. It is concluded that optimisation can be introduced at the very beginning of the process of designing and optimisation reveals to be helpful and increasingly needed for an effective design process when constraints and boundary conditions cannot be easily evaluated by a conventional intuitive process and general domain knowledge. This advance of performative orientated design can only be viable within a within a digital supported methodological approach.A integração no processo de design de objetivos meta projeto, tais como os requerimentos relacionados com a leveza, o desempenho funcional, ou o uso eficiente de materiais, são especialmente difíceis de compreender e já não podem ser entendidos direta e intuitivamente pelo próprio designer. Isto revela-se particularmente na fase conceptual do processo de desenvolvimento. Métodos e ferramentas de design que conseguem integrar a preferência pessoal do designer, fatores culturais e que podem ao mesmo tempo combinar um comportamento interativo - inerente ao design conceptual - com o rigor formal da otimização são, portanto, desejáveis. O objetivo do trabalho apresentado nesta dissertação é desenvolver e testar um método que pode ser modelado e organizado individualmente conforme o próprio processo de desenvolvimento de um designer. Este método pode adaptar-se a qualquer problema de design em particular e pode ser totalmente construído conforme as preferências pessoais e as necessidades do designer. O método é parte de um processo de design digital, onde a análise e a simulação não apenas apoiam o processo de desenvolvimento do projeto, mas também interagem como processo de exploração e contribuem com propostas para soluções diferentes. Pode desta forma contribuir para uma exploração mais completa e mais criativa do espaço de soluções. Esta abordagem quase completamente digital promove, ao mesmo tempo, a integração de modelos computacionais no raciocínio e nas atividades do designer durante o processo de design completo. Um processo de design digital permite a integração de software de simulação e de análise logo no início do projeto. No entanto, deverá ser a tarefa do designer construir o seu próprio software, combinando os programas e os scripts necessários com a intenção de introduzir a otimização no seu processo de design de uma maneira eficaz e eficiente e, claro, em conformidade com o objetivo específico do processo. Nesta tese, é apresentado um método baseado na combinação de softwares, que juntamente com uma geometria paramétrica e com princípios evolutivos, permitam maximizar a pesquisa exploratória do espaço das soluções num processo de design iterativo. Este método consiste numa combinação, com um objectivo comum, de programas de software disponíveis no mercado e de scripts desenvolvidos pelo próprio designer. A capacidade deste método apoiar o designer, de uma forma interativa, durante a fase conceptual do processo de design é demonstrada e aplicada a um projeto conceptual de sombreadores. Concluiu-se que a otimização pode ser introduzida durante a fase conceptual do processo de design e que a otimização se revela não só útil, mas cada vez mais necessária para um desenvolvimento eficaz, quando os constrangimentos e os limites não podem ser facilmente avaliados por um processo intuitivo e convencional baseado no conhecimento geral do domínio.     ICS Materials. Towards a re-Interpretation of material qualities through interactive, connected, and smart materials.

    The domain of materials for design is changing under the influence of an increased technological advancement, miniaturization and democratization. Materials are becoming connected, augmented, computational, interactive, active, responsive, and dynamic. These are ICS Materials, an acronym that stands for Interactive, Connected and Smart. While labs around the world are experimenting with these new materials, there is the need to reflect on their potentials and impact on design. This paper is a first step in this direction: to interpret and describe the qualities of ICS materials, considering their experiential pattern, their expressive sensorial dimension, and their aesthetic of interaction. Through case studies, we analyse and classify these emerging ICS Materials and identified common characteristics, and challenges, e.g. the ability to change over time or their programmability by the designers and users. On that basis, we argue there is the need to reframe and redesign existing models to describe ICS materials, making their qualities emerge

    Special oils for halal and safe cosmetics

    Three types of non conventional oils were extracted, analyzed and tested for toxicity. Date palm kernel oil (DPKO), mango kernel oil (MKO) and Ramputan seed oil (RSO). Oil content for tow cultivars of dates Deglect Noor and Moshkan was 9.67% and 7.30%, respectively. The three varieties of mango were found to contain about 10% oil in average. The red yellow types of Ramputan were found to have 11 and 14% oil, respectively. The phenolic compounds in DPKO, MKO and RSO were 0.98, 0.88 and 0.78 mg/ml Gallic acid equivalent, respectively. Oils were analyzed for their fatty acid composition and they are rich in oleic acid C18:1 and showed the presence of (dodecanoic acid) lauric acid C12:0, which reported to appear some antimicrobial activities. All extracted oils, DPKO, MKO and RSO showed no toxic effect using prime shrimp bioassay. Since these oils are stable, melt at skin temperature, have good lubricity and are great source of essential fatty acids; they could be used as highly moisturizing, cleansing and nourishing oils because of high oleic acid content. They are ideal for use in such halal cosmetics such as Science, Engineering and Technology 75 skin care and massage, hair-care, soap and shampoo products

    Acetylcholine esterase as a possible marker for the detection of halal way of slaughtering

    Introduction: Different methods of slaughtering are being practiced because of differences in religious guidelines and environmental issues (use of electricity) or convenience of handling etc. Variation in methods of slaughtering results in different conditions namely, release of varying amount of blood and different degree of movement of its body parts prior to death. These issues are related to the release of neurotransmitter (NT) at the neuro-muscular junction (NMJ) eventually is subject to be released from the body through the blood flow. Experimental design: Muscle samples from chicken in small pieces were collected immediately after slaughtering. Slaughtering was carried out using sharp knife. Two different conditions pertaining to the Islamic guidelines of slaughtering were investigated. such as whether the neck was severed (S+) or not (S-) from the body during slaughtering and whether the animal just after slaughtering was released (R+) or not (R-). The level of acetylecholine esterase mRNA involved in the degradation of acetylecholine, a NT at NMJ was investigated by RT-PCR. Results: The level of acetylecholine esterase mRNA was not detected in the sample obtained from the chicken slaughtered following Islamic guidelines i.e., neck should not be severed and body should be released just after the slaughtering (R+S-). Conclusions: Level of acetylcholine or acetylcholine esterase can be used as a biomarker to identify if the slaughtering is performed following Islamic guidelines

    Calophyllum canum : antibacterial and anticancer plant

    Human have used plants as a source of medicine throughout the world since time immemorial. Today there are at least 120 distinct chemical substances derived from plants that are considered as important drugs currently in use in one or more countries in the world. In particular, 60% drugs currently in clinical use for treatment of cancer were found to be of natural origin. Calophyllum canum is a large tree which grows in South East Asia and which is popular for its timber. This plant belongs to the family Guttiferae; a family that boasts species which are rich in bioactive phytochemicals. Some species are believed to having medicinal values and are used against several diseases including anti-inflammatory, anti infectious, astringent and antipyretic. We have successfully isolated two compounds from the methanol extract of Calophyllum canum stembarks that active inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213 and ATCC 25923). The cytotoxic study on the extracts revealed that the n-hexane extract had the strongest antiproliferation activity, followed by the methanol extract. n-hexane strongly inhibited the growth of TE1 and MCF7 cell lines. IC50 for n-hexane and methanol extract activity on the A549 cell line was found to be 27.96 μg/mL and 78.9 μg/mL respectively.The compounds (CE0 - CE5) isolated from ethyl acetate extract of C. canum are active to inhibit cell proliferation of human cervix adenocarcinoma cells
