    A Detail Based Method for Linear Full Reference Image Quality Prediction

    In this paper, a novel Full Reference method is proposed for image quality assessment, using the combination of two separate metrics to measure the perceptually distinct impact of detail losses and of spurious details. To this purpose, the gradient of the impaired image is locally decomposed as a predicted version of the original gradient, plus a gradient residual. It is assumed that the detail attenuation identifies the detail loss, whereas the gradient residuals describe the spurious details. It turns out that the perceptual impact of detail losses is roughly linear with the loss of the positional Fisher information, while the perceptual impact of the spurious details is roughly proportional to a logarithmic measure of the signal to residual ratio. The affine combination of these two metrics forms a new index strongly correlated with the empirical Differential Mean Opinion Score (DMOS) for a significant class of image impairments, as verified for three independent popular databases. The method allowed alignment and merging of DMOS data coming from these different databases to a common DMOS scale by affine transformations. Unexpectedly, the DMOS scale setting is possible by the analysis of a single image affected by additive noise.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures.     Most of the existing 3D video quality assessment (3D-VQA/SVQA) methods only consider spatial information by directly using an image quality evaluation method. In addition, a few take the motion information of adjacent frames into consideration. In practice, one may assume that a single data-view is unlikely to be sufficient for effectively learning the video quality. Therefore, integration of multi-view information is both valuable and necessary. In this paper, we propose an effective multi-view feature learning metric for blind stereoscopic video quality assessment (BSVQA), which jointly focuses on spatial information, temporal information and inter-frame spatio-temporal information. In our study, a set of local binary patterns (LBP) statistical features extracted from a computed frame curvelet representation are used as spatial and spatio-temporal description, and the local flow statistical features based on the estimation of optical flow are used to describe the temporal distortion. Subsequently, a support vector regression (SVR) is utilized to map the feature vectors of each single view to subjective quality scores. Finally, the scores of multiple views are pooled into the final score according to their contribution rate. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed metric significantly outperforms the existing metrics and can achieve higher consistency with subjective quality assessment

    Understanding user experience of mobile video: Framework, measurement, and optimization

    Since users have become the focus of product/service design in last decade, the term User eXperience (UX) has been frequently used in the field of Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI). Research on UX facilitates a better understanding of the various aspects of the user’s interaction with the product or service. Mobile video, as a new and promising service and research field, has attracted great attention. Due to the significance of UX in the success of mobile video (Jordan, 2002), many researchers have centered on this area, examining users’ expectations, motivations, requirements, and usage context. As a result, many influencing factors have been explored (Buchinger, Kriglstein, Brandt & Hlavacs, 2011; Buchinger, Kriglstein & Hlavacs, 2009). However, a general framework for specific mobile video service is lacking for structuring such a great number of factors. To measure user experience of multimedia services such as mobile video, quality of experience (QoE) has recently become a prominent concept. In contrast to the traditionally used concept quality of service (QoS), QoE not only involves objectively measuring the delivered service but also takes into account user’s needs and desires when using the service, emphasizing the user’s overall acceptability on the service. Many QoE metrics are able to estimate the user perceived quality or acceptability of mobile video, but may be not enough accurate for the overall UX prediction due to the complexity of UX. Only a few frameworks of QoE have addressed more aspects of UX for mobile multimedia applications but need be transformed into practical measures. The challenge of optimizing UX remains adaptations to the resource constrains (e.g., network conditions, mobile device capabilities, and heterogeneous usage contexts) as well as meeting complicated user requirements (e.g., usage purposes and personal preferences). In this chapter, we investigate the existing important UX frameworks, compare their similarities and discuss some important features that fit in the mobile video service. Based on the previous research, we propose a simple UX framework for mobile video application by mapping a variety of influencing factors of UX upon a typical mobile video delivery system. Each component and its factors are explored with comprehensive literature reviews. The proposed framework may benefit in user-centred design of mobile video through taking a complete consideration of UX influences and in improvement of mobile videoservice quality by adjusting the values of certain factors to produce a positive user experience. It may also facilitate relative research in the way of locating important issues to study, clarifying research scopes, and setting up proper study procedures. We then review a great deal of research on UX measurement, including QoE metrics and QoE frameworks of mobile multimedia. Finally, we discuss how to achieve an optimal quality of user experience by focusing on the issues of various aspects of UX of mobile video. In the conclusion, we suggest some open issues for future study

    The Perception-Distortion Tradeoff

    Image restoration algorithms are typically evaluated by some distortion measure (e.g. PSNR, SSIM, IFC, VIF) or by human opinion scores that quantify perceived perceptual quality. In this paper, we prove mathematically that distortion and perceptual quality are at odds with each other. Specifically, we study the optimal probability for correctly discriminating the outputs of an image restoration algorithm from real images. We show that as the mean distortion decreases, this probability must increase (indicating worse perceptual quality). As opposed to the common belief, this result holds true for any distortion measure, and is not only a problem of the PSNR or SSIM criteria. We also show that generative-adversarial-nets (GANs) provide a principled way to approach the perception-distortion bound. This constitutes theoretical support to their observed success in low-level vision tasks. Based on our analysis, we propose a new methodology for evaluating image restoration methods, and use it to perform an extensive comparison between recent super-resolution algorithms.Comment: CVPR 2018 (long oral presentation), see talk at: https://youtu.be/_aXbGqdEkjk?t=39m43

    Perceptual lossless medical image coding

    A novel perceptually lossless coder is presented for the compression of medical images. Built on the JPEG 2000 coding framework, the heart of the proposed coder is a visual pruning function, embedded with an advanced human vision model to identify and to remove visually insignificant/irrelevant information. The proposed coder offers the advantages of simplicity and modularity with bit-stream compliance. Current results have shown superior compression ratio gains over that of its information lossless counterparts without any visible distortion. In addition, a case study consisting of 31 medical experts has shown that no perceivable difference of statistical significance exists between the original images and the images compressed by the proposed coder

    Perceptual Video Quality Assessment and Enhancement

    With the rapid development of network visual communication technologies, digital video has become ubiquitous and indispensable in our everyday lives. Video acquisition, communication, and processing systems introduce various types of distortions, which may have major impact on perceived video quality by human observers. Effective and efficient objective video quality assessment (VQA) methods that can predict perceptual video quality are highly desirable in modern visual communication systems for performance evaluation, quality control and resource allocation purposes. Moreover, perceptual VQA measures may also be employed to optimize a wide variety of video processing algorithms and systems for best perceptual quality. This thesis exploits several novel ideas in the areas of video quality assessment and enhancement. Firstly, by considering a video signal as a 3D volume image, we propose a 3D structural similarity (SSIM) based full-reference (FR) VQA approach, which also incorporates local information content and local distortion-based pooling methods. Secondly, a reduced-reference (RR) VQA scheme is developed by tracing the evolvement of local phase structures over time in the complex wavelet domain. Furthermore, we propose a quality-aware video system which combines spatial and temporal quality measures with a robust video watermarking technique, such that RR-VQA can be performed without transmitting RR features via an ancillary lossless channel. Finally, a novel strategy for enhancing video denoising algorithms, namely poly-view fusion, is developed by examining a video sequence as a 3D volume image from multiple (front, side, top) views. This leads to significant and consistent gain in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and SSIM performance, especially at high noise levels
