General highlight detection in sport videos
Attention is a psychological measurement of human reflection against stimulus. We propose a general framework of highlight detection by comparing attention intensity during the watching of sports videos. Three steps are involved: adaptive selection on salient features, unified attention estimation and highlight identification. Adaptive selection computes feature correlation to decide an optimal set of salient features. Unified estimation combines these features by the technique of multi-resolution autoregressive (MAR) and thus creates a temporal curve of attention intensity. We rank the intensity of attention to discriminate boundaries of highlights. Such a framework alleviates semantic uncertainty around sport highlights and leads to an efficient and effective highlight detection. The advantages are as follows: (1) the capability of using data at coarse temporal resolutions; (2) the robustness against noise caused by modality asynchronism, perception uncertainty and feature mismatch; (3) the employment of Markovian constrains on content presentation, and (4) multi-resolution estimation on attention intensity, which enables the precise allocation of event boundaries
Perceptual Copyright Protection Using Multiresolution Wavelet-Based Watermarking And Fuzzy Logic
In this paper, an efficiently DWT-based watermarking technique is proposed to
embed signatures in images to attest the owner identification and discourage
the unauthorized copying. This paper deals with a fuzzy inference filter to
choose the larger entropy of coefficients to embed watermarks. Unlike most
previous watermarking frameworks which embedded watermarks in the larger
coefficients of inner coarser subbands, the proposed technique is based on
utilizing a context model and fuzzy inference filter by embedding watermarks in
the larger-entropy coefficients of coarser DWT subbands. The proposed
approaches allow us to embed adaptive casting degree of watermarks for
transparency and robustness to the general image-processing attacks such as
smoothing, sharpening, and JPEG compression. The approach has no need the
original host image to extract watermarks. Our schemes have been shown to
provide very good results in both image transparency and robustness.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Perceptually-Driven Video Coding with the Daala Video Codec
The Daala project is a royalty-free video codec that attempts to compete with
the best patent-encumbered codecs. Part of our strategy is to replace core
tools of traditional video codecs with alternative approaches, many of them
designed to take perceptual aspects into account, rather than optimizing for
simple metrics like PSNR. This paper documents some of our experiences with
these tools, which ones worked and which did not. We evaluate which tools are
easy to integrate into a more traditional codec design, and show results in the
context of the codec being developed by the Alliance for Open Media.Comment: 19 pages, Proceedings of SPIE Workshop on Applications of Digital

Automated pebble mosaic stylization of images
Digital mosaics have usually used regular tiles, simulating the historical
"tessellated" mosaics. In this paper, we present a method for synthesizing
pebble mosaics, a historical mosaic style in which the tiles are rounded
pebbles. We address both the tiling problem, where pebbles are distributed over
the image plane so as to approximate the input image content, and the problem
of geometry, creating a smooth rounded shape for each pebble. We adapt SLIC,
simple linear iterative clustering, to obtain elongated tiles conforming to
image content, and smooth the resulting irregular shapes into shapes resembling
pebble cross-sections. Then, we create an interior and exterior contour for
each pebble and solve a Laplace equation over the region between them to obtain
height-field geometry. The resulting pebble set approximates the input image
while presenting full geometry that can be rendered and textured for a highly
detailed representation of a pebble mosaic
