    My intentions are to create a series of sculptural vessels that consist of complementary forms, which through comparison develop a conversation of contrast and balance. The contrasting elements will help to create the visual disparity that can be associated with duality. This concept will be explored through employing formal issues of sculpture such as, form, color, surface, space, and composition. All of the sculptures in the thesis exhibition will be groups of contrasting vessels relating to the interaction of opposing human personalities. These sculptures will be arranged in a specific manner to exemplify their relationship. Starting with wheel thrown forms, I will create sculptural vessels using similar building methods with contrasting finishing techniques. Each pairing of vessels will contain a combination of angular and fluid forms. The angular forms will be made up of sharp and crisp lines to create the structure, whereas more loose and curvilinear shapes will generate the fluid forms. The surface textures of the forms will remain simple but will contain either organic or sterile characteristics. Each piece will be finished with the same white glaze to unify the complementary vessels. This will allow for the contrast in form and process to be the main focus. The placement of each piece will create a dialogue of contrast and balance between them. For instance, a tall linear form paired with a very small and organic vessel will create a contrasting view of proportion and weight. Specific placement and pairing is key to accomplishing an interactive dialogue between the pieces themselves and between the viewer and the sculpture. The use of complimentary forms, unifying color, and specific composition using multiple parts will be essential to create a dynamic conversation.     University of New Hampshire Students\u27 Perceptions of the University of New Hampshire Police Department

    This project involves discovering the positive and negative perceptions that the UNH student body has on the UNH police department. Classes of varying sizes were given surveys that contained demographic questions, as well as questions on participants’ perceptions of the local police force. Using survey analyses from the students attending the University of New Hampshire, conclusions were made about the perceptions and several characteristics that were found to be important. Important results were that UNH student class standing is unimportant in the perceptions of UNH police; males are more negative in their perceptions of the police than females; when misconduct does occur, negative perceptions do increase and that UNH students overall have positive perceptions of the UNH police

    Fear of Crime, Incivilities, and Collective Efficacy in Four Miami Neighborhoods

    Purpose: Extant literature indicates that individual perceptions of collective efficacy and incivilities are important in explaining fear of crime. These studies, however, often implicitly assume that the relationships between key variables do not differ between neighborhoods. The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between perceptions of collective efficacy, perceptions of incivilities, and fear of crime and determine whether these relationships are constant between neighborhoods. Methods: Surveys were conducted using a sample of residents from four neighborhoods within Miami-Dade County. Structural equation models were used to examine the relationships between perceptions of collective efficacy, perceptions of incivilities, and fear of crime for each neighborhood separately. Tests for invariance were conducted to determine whether the coefficients from these models differed across neighborhoods. Results: Results from these analyses suggest that the relationship between perceptions of collective efficacy and fear of crime exhibit significant heterogeneity between neighborhoods, as do a number of other relationships. The relationships between perceptions of collective efficacy and perceptions of incivilities, and perceptions of incivilities and fear of crime do not exhibit heterogeneity.     The purpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions of the male and female students of Petra Christian University toward the language used in a three-star hotel website in Surabaya and toward the hotel itself. I want to know if the perceptions toward the language will influence the perceptions toward the hotel which writes the website. The respondents of this study are 30 male and 30 female students of Petra Christian University. Here, there are some similarities and differences found between the male and female students' perceptions toward the language used in a three-star hotel website in Surabaya and toward the hotel itself. It seems that the female students usually see language as one important way to know the hotel. On the other hand, it seems that the male students do not really care about what kind of language that is used in a hotel websit

    Quantum mechanics may be formulated as SENSIBLE QUANTUM MECHANICS (SQM) so that it contains nothing probabilistic, except, in a certain frequency sense, conscious perceptions. Sets of these perceptions can be deterministically realized with measures given by expectation values of positive-operator-valued AWARENESS OPERATORS in a quantum state of the universe which never jumps or collapses. Ratios of the measures for these sets of perceptions can be interpreted as frequency-type probabilities for many actually existing sets rather than as propensities for potentialities to be actualized, so there is nothing indeterministic in SQM. These frequency-type probabilities generally cannot be given by the ordinary quantum "probabilities" for a single set of alternatives. PROBABILISM, or ascribing probabilities to unconscious aspects of the world, may be seen to be an AESTHEMAMORPHIC MYTH. No fundamental correlation or equivalence is postulated between different perceptions (each being the entirety of a single conscious experience and thus not in direct contact with any other), so SQM, a variant of Everett's "many-worlds" framework, is a "many-perceptions" framework but not a "many-minds" framework. Different detailed SQM theories may be tested against experienced perceptions by the TYPICALITIES (defined herein) they predict for these perceptions.     This research investigates how employee perceptions of performance appraisal use relate to employee satisfaction with the performance appraisal and with the appraiser—the employees’ immediate supervisor. Employee perceptions that appraisals were used for development positively associated with both attitudinal variables, after controlling for justice perceptions, performance, and demographics. Perceptions of PA use for evaluation did not show a significant relationship with either employee attitude. Implications of these findings are discussed

    The irony of choice in recruitment: when similarity turns recruiters to other candidates

    Across two experimental studies, we examine the influence of similarity perceptions on recruiters’ job fit perceptions of job applicants. In addition, a robustness study extends the effect of similarity by introducing work-related sources of similarity and tests the relationship between workrelated similarities on similarity perceptions. Moreover, we explore the emotional and cognitive mechanisms behind the effects of similarity perceptions on job fit. We also propose and test a boundary condition, such that, when job desirability is low, the effect of demographic similarity on perceived similarity is reversed. The sample for the three studies consist of specialized master’s students with work experience in human resources management who acted as recruiters in a resume screening situation. The results show that the effects of similarity are not always positive for job fit perceptions. The studies provide evidence that when recruiters perceive applicants as similar to themselves, biased evaluations occur. Finally, we provide results that show the effects of mediation and moderation analysis whereby liking mediates the relationship between similarity perceptions and job fit perceptions through emotional, cognitive and motivational sequential mediators. Additionally, job desirability moderates the relationship between demographic similarity and similarity perceptions so that when job desirability is low, the effect of demographic similarity on perceived similarity is reversed

    Influence of Personal Factors on Macau Residents\u27 Gaming Impact Perceptions

    This paper explores the influence of personal factors on gaming impact perceptions using Macau, China as a case study. The objective is to examine how residents\u27 gaming perceptions were affected by (1) personal benefits received from gaming; (2) length of residence; and (3) demographic characteristics. The study also aims to assess the relative magnitude of influence exerted by each variable on gaming impact perceptions. All personal factors were found to contribute to differences in gaming impact perceptions among sub-groups of respondents. Regression analyses revealed that age, education and residence status had influence on gaming impact perceptions. Findings support that the theory of social exchange is at play in the shaping of perceptions of gaming impact among Macau residents
