Integrating internal behavioural models with external expression
Users will believe in a virtual character more if they
can empathise with it and understand what ‘makes it
tick’. This will be helped by making the motivations
of the character, and other processes that go towards
creating its behaviour, clear to the user. This paper
proposes that this can be achieved by linking the behavioural or cognitive system of the character to expressive behaviour. This idea is discussed in general
and then demonstrated with an implementation that
links a simulation of perception to the animation of a
character’s eyes
A Framework for Designing 3d Virtual Environments
The process of design and development of virtual environments can be supported by tools and frameworks, to save time in technical aspects and focusing on the content. In this paper we present an academic framework which provides several levels of abstraction to ease this work. It includes state-of-the-art components we devised or integrated adopting open-source solutions in order to face specific problems. Feeling crowded yet?: Crowd simulations for VR
With advances in virtual reality technology and its multiple applications, the need for believable, immersive virtual environments is increasing. Even though current computer graphics methods allow us to develop highly realistic virtual worlds, the main element failing to enhance presence is autonomous groups of human inhabitants. A great
number of crowd simulation techniques have emerged in the last decade, but critical details in the crowd's movements and appearance do not meet the standards necessary to convince VR participants that they are present in a real crowd. Attack on the clones: managing player perceptions of visual variety and believability in video game crowds
Crowds of non-player characters are increasingly common in contemporary video games. It is often the case that individual models are re-used, lowering visual variety in the crowd and potentially affecting realism and believability. This paper explores a number of approaches to increase visual diversity in large game crowds, and discusses a procedural solution for generating diverse non-player character models. This is evaluated using mixed methods, including a “clone spotting” activity and measurement of impact on computational overheads, in order to present a multi-faceted and adjustable solution to increase believability and variety in video game crowds
Optimising Humanness: Designing the best human-like Bot for Unreal Tournament 2004
This paper presents multiple hybridizations of the two best
bots on the BotPrize 2014 competition, which sought for the best humanlike
bot playing the First Person Shooter game Unreal Tournament 2004.
To this aim the participants were evaluated using a Turing test in the
game. The work considers MirrorBot (the winner) and NizorBot (the
second) codes and combines them in two different approaches, aiming to
obtain a bot able to show the best behaviour overall. There is also an
evolutionary version on MirrorBot, which has been optimized by means
of a Genetic Algorithm. The new and the original bots have been tested
in a new, open, and public Turing test whose results show that the evolutionary
version of MirrorBot apparently improves the original bot, and

From presence to consciousness through virtual reality
Immersive virtual environments can break the deep, everyday connection between where our senses tell us we are and where we are actually located and whom we are with. The concept of 'presence' refers to the phenomenon of behaving and feeling as if we are in the virtual world created by computer displays. In this article, we argue that presence is worthy of study by neuroscientists, and that it might aid the study of perception and consciousness
Perceived Realism of Pedestrian Crowds Trajectories in VR
Crowd simulation algorithms play an essential role in populating Virtual Reality (VR) environments with multiple autonomous humanoid agents. The generation of plausible trajectories can be a significant computational cost for real-time graphics engines, especially in untethered and mobile devices such as portable VR devices. Previous research explores the plausibility and realism of crowd simulations on desktop computers but fails to account the impact it has on immersion. This study explores how the realism of crowd trajectories affects the perceived immersion in VR. We do so by running a psychophysical experiment in which participants rate the realism of real/synthetic trajectories data, showing similar level of perceived realism
