    Perceived Usefulness of RFID-enabled Information Services - A Systematic Approach

    Even though RFID technology is currently gaining importance mainly in logistics, usage areas, such as shopping or after-sales enhancements beyond the supply chain are envisioned. Yet, while RFID hits the street it is questioned if it may undermine one’s privacy while providing few customer benefits. Meeting this criticism this paper investigates RFID-enabled information services and the drivers of their usefulness for consumers. The article claims that the more risk one associates with a product the more benefit from RFID-enabled information services is perceived. We show empirically that the nature of product risk provides a useful framework to decide on the types of RFID information services a marketer should offer to create RFID usefulness perceptions and increase technology acceptance

    Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

    Knowledge Profile in PAJAIS: A Review of Literature and Future Research Directions

    It is our pleasure and honor to be the Editor-in-Chief of the Pacific Asia Journal of the Association for Information Systems (PAJAIS). After cultivating over a decade, PAJAIS has become an important platform for researchers to share their high-quality papers. The mission of PAJAIS is to be a leading IS journal. Although the journal intends to have close ties with the communities in Asia Pacific regions, it is an open platform that welcomes submissions on any IS-related topics from authors around the world. In order to provide readers with a better understanding of the profile of PAJAIS, this editorial is the first in the series to summarize what has been published. Our founding editor, Prof. Ting-Peng Liang, and I started this series with a discussion of the publications in PAJAIS

    A framework for the successful implementation of food traceability systems in China

    Implementation of food traceability systems in China faces many challenges due to the scale, diversity and complexity of China’s food supply chains. This study aims to identify critical success factors specific to the implementation of traceability systems in China. Twenty-seven critical success factors were identified in the literature. Interviews with managers at four food enterprises in a pre-study helped identify success criteria and five additional critical success factors. These critical success factors were tested through a survey of managers in eighty-three food companies. This study identifies six dimensions for critical success factors: laws, regulations and standards; government support; consumer knowledge and support; effective management and communication; top management and vendor support; and information and system quality

    ICT-Enabled Service Innovation in Human-Centered Service Systems: A Systematic Literature Review

    In numerous studies, information and communications technology (ICT) has been shown to be an enabler of service innovations in human-centered service systems (HCSSs). The resulting findings, however, have not been presented in a systematic way. Therefore, we present an integrated and representative overview of the literature on ICT-enabled service innovation in HCSSs. To show the existing findings, we reviewed papers from top journals in the fields of management science, information systems, service research, and innovation management. By using a systematic literature review, we identified 37 relevant papers. We systematically assessed the papers based on an analytical framework that consists of a four-phase management process and the components of service systems. We showed that the research background and the research methods used in the papers are very diverse, representing a large research field with a varying degree of knowledge. Based on our findings, we derived a specific agenda for future research

    Use of delivery drones for humanitarian operations: analysis of adoption barriers among logistics service providers from the technology acceptance model perspective

    Delivery drones are yet to be adopted as a systematic delivery system for humanitarian operations but have the potential to substantially increase the efficiency and effectiveness of future delivery options. Thus, we analyse the impact of factors affecting the adoption of delivery drones by logistics service providers for humanitarian operations. A conceptual model of potential barriers to adoption and development is created using the Technology Acceptance Model theory involving security, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and attitude as factors that affect the intention to use. We validate the model using empirical data collected from 103 respondents by the 10 leading logistics firms located in China between May and August 2016. through a survey to examine factors currently affecting the intention/non-intention to adopt delivery drones. The results show that ease of use and addressing key security considerations about the drone, the delivery package and the recipient are crucial for adopting the technology as a specialized delivery option for logistics service providers. This is the first study of its kind and contributes to understanding the operational, supply chain and behavioural factors in the adoption of drones by logistics services providers for humanitarian operations

    An SCO-enabled logistics and supply-chain management system in construction

    Logistic and supply chain management (LSCM) is of paramount importance to a construction project but is often problematic. Many researchers see LSCM per se as a web of decisions to be made, and attribute problems to a lack of process and information concurrence. This is exacerbated by fragmentation, discontinuity, and heterogeneity in construction LSCM. The bi-directional information flow remains unachieved in the existing sensing-based systems for construction LSCM. Without panoramically interconnected to other smart abilities such as the automatic action-taking ability, most existing sensing-based systems are insufficient to realize their full potentials in facilitating construction LSCM. Building on previous studies on smart construction objects (SCOs), this paper aims to develop an SCO-enabled system that can enhance concurrence of process and information, with a view to informing better decision-making in construction LSCM. It does so by first analyzing the problems in prevailing LSCM practices using business process reengineering. Based on this analysis, the architecture for an SCO-enabled LSCM system is proposed and developed into a prototype. Then the system is calibrated and validated in the rich context of offshore prefabrication housing production in Hong Kong. It is found that SCOs, with their properties of awareness, communicativeness, and autonomy built into a smart management system, can supplement the existing LSCM process with more concurrent decision-making information. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge in two areas. It adds to the theoretical debate on decision-making by arguing the importance of information and process concurrence and trying to explicate it in the context of construction LSCM.     Effects of Enterprise Digital Assistants in medication dispensing operations: Case hospital pharmacy

    OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY In this thesis, I study the effects of introducing automation in the form of barcode-reader enabled Enterprise Digital Assistants and their impact on work efficiency and medication safety in a hospital pharmacy setting. The goal is to determine whether the efficiency of the process can be improved without compromising medication safety. In addition to the quantitative objectives, employee perceptions on the likelihood of success of the implementation are studied to include a more qualitative approach on the subject. DATA AND METHODOLOGY The data include information on different phases of the medication dispensing process taking place in the HUS Hospital Pharmacy in Helsinki, Finland. My sample consists of 80 341 orders processed on 143 days between July 2014 and April 2015. I use statistical analysis to calculate pre- and post-implementation process throughput times and error rates. Employee perceptions are measured with a questionnaire and interviews. FINDINGS OF THE STUDY It is possible to improve the efficiency of the order-picking process by automating the pharmaceutical inspection phase with the EDAs without increasing the dispensing error rate. Firstly, The efficiency of the order-picking process improved by 34% from 1.40 rows per minute to 1.87 rows per minute. Secondly, the EDA implementation bears potential for further process streamlining, as the pharmaceutical inspection could be performed without an additional hospital pharmacist, freeing resources to perform more knowledge-intensive work tasks. The questionnaire and employee interviews revealed that employee perceptions on the usefulness and the ease-of-use of the implementation would seem to affect positively on the perceived likelihood of success of the implementation. Even though the implementation project had faced several difficulties, the employees considered that the devices are useful and thus have faith in the success of the implementation

The repercussions of this extend to companies, impacting their brand reputation, revenue streams and overall profitability. Industries like agriculture, banking, electronics, and high-value deliveries uses the emergence of blockchain technology as a powerful tool to discern between authentic and counterfeit items. Its potential as a means to curtail the influx of fake products in the market is substantial. Blockchain technology, at its core, operates as a decentralized and distributed digital ledger system, meticulously recording transactions within interconnected blocks across multiple databases. The inherent security of this technology ensures the immutability of these blocks, rendering them invulnerable to alteration or hacking. By leveraging blockchain technology, consumers can independently verify the authenticity of a product, eliminating the need for reliance on third-party intermediaries. Incorporating recent technological advancements, the utilization of Quick Response (QR) codes offers a robust approach to combat the proliferation of counterfeit goods. The integration of blockchain technology with QR codes serves as a means to uphold the integrity of products. This innovative system securely stores product details and unique codes in the form of blocks,  where QR codes play a pivotal role in collecting and matching these unique codes with entries in the blockchain database. If the QR code matches with entries in the database, the user receives a confirmation of the product's authenticity; otherwise, an alert is triggered, signaling the presence of a counterfeit product
