A Divided Front: Military Dissent During the Vietnam War

Emerging from a triumphant victory in World War Two, American patriotism surged in the 1950s. Positive images in theater and literature of America’s potential to bring peace and prosperity to a grateful Asia fueled the notion that the United States could be the “good Samaritan of the entire world.”[1] This idea prevailed through the mid-1960s as three-quarters of Americans indicated they trusted their government. That positive feeling would not last, and America’s belief in its own exceptionalism would begin to shatter with “the major military escalation in Vietnam and the shocking revelations it brought.”[2] The turmoil in social and economic spheres during the 1960s combined with contradictions about America’s role in Vietnam and realization of the government’s deception regarding the nature and progress of the war itself fueled the largest movement of servicemen and veteran dissent in this nation’s history. Be Good: Hatred and Hope in the Letters of Gerald Koster

To tell an informative story about someone’s life is difficult at the best of times. Gerald “Gerry” Koster’s correspondence during his last year of service in the US Navy towards the end of the Pacific War can thus only paint an incomplete portrait of who he was and what exactly the war meant to him. Nevertheless, there are things that his letters can teach readers, not only about Koster’s role and daily activities in the military, but about his personal character and how that manifested in his interactions with the defeated Japanese and his family. And perhaps, through his personal character, it is possible to discern something larger about the culture of his specific time and place in history

Протягом останніх десятиліть в українському суспільстві відбуваються суттєві зміни в осмисленні та легітимації гендерних відносин. Успішне впровадження і регулювання гендерних відносин у суспільстві передбачає утвердження цінності гендерної рівності як у суспільстві загалом, так і різних його інституціях зокрема. Це, насамперед, недопущення гендерної дискримінації, забезпечення рівної участі жінок і чоловіків у прийнятті суспільно важливих рішень. Інститут армії не є винятком, адже у період соціальних проблем, військових конфліктів важливо фахово інтегрувати та враховувати інтереси тих категорій громадян і громадянок, які залучені до розв’язання конфліктів і встановлення миру в країні. Ґендерна політика держави передбачає ефективне впровадження ґендерного підходу у життєдіяльність війська для створення гарантій рівних прав та можливостей людини незалежно від її статі. З початку 90-х р.р. ХХ ст. в Україні реалізується Концепція «ґендерного підходу до розвитку суспільства», що відповідає потребам змін, які відбуваються в реальних соціально-статевих відносинах, і тим потребам, з якими сучасне суспільство моделює і проектує своє майбутнє. Значна увага приділяється дотриманню державою гендерної рівності в усіх сферах її діяльності для участі в національному, політичному, економічному, соціальному та культурному розвитку. У статті розглядається проблема регулювання ґендерних відносин у Збройних силах України, проаналізовано особливості соціальної профілактики гендерних стереотипів військовослужбовців, визначено причини виникнення гендерних стереотипів, особливості міжособистісних стосунків.In recent decades, significant changes in the understanding and legitimization of gender relations have taken place in Ukrainian society. Successful implementation and regulation of gender relations in society implies affirmation of the value of gender equality both in society in general and in its various institutions in particular. First of all, it’s the elimination of gender discrimination, ensuring equal participation of women and men in socially important decisions. The institute of the army is no exception, because in times of social problems and military conflicts it is important to professionally integrate and to take into account the interests of those categories of citizens involved in conflict resolution and peace-building in the country. Ukrainian women along with men participated during Euromaidan protests in 2013-2014 in all activities, including in the military, forming the so-called Women Hundreds. The gender policy of the state envisages the effective implementation of a gender approach in the life of the military to create guarantees of equal human rights and opportunities regardless of gender. Since the early 90's of twentieth century Ukraine implements the concept of «Gender Approach to the Development of Society», which responds to the needs of changes occurring in real socio-sexual relations and to the needs with which modern society models and designs its future. Considerable attention is paid to the implementation of gender equality by the state in all spheres of its activity in order to participate in national, political, economic, social and cultural development. The article deals with the problem of regulation of gender relations in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the peculiarities of social prevention of gender stereotypes of servicemen have been analyzed; the causes of gender stereotypes and features of interpersonal relations have been identified
