    Frobenius norm regularization for the multivariate von Misses distribution

    Penalizing the model complexity is necessary to avoid overfittingwhen the number of data samples is low with respect to the number of model parameters. In this paper, we introduce a penalization term that places an independent prior distribution for each parameter of the multivariate von Mises distribution.We also propose a circular distance that can be used to estimate the Kullback–Leibler divergence between any two circular distributions as goodness-of-fit measure. We compare the resulting regularized von Mises models on synthetic data and real neuroanatomical data to show that the distribution fitted using the penalized estimator generally achieves better results than nonpenalized multivariate von Mises estimator

    Graphical models for visual object recognition and tracking

Such computer vision systems must be robust to wide variations in object appearance, the often small size of training databases, and ambiguities induced by articulated or partially occluded objects. Graphical models provide a powerful framework for encoding the statistical structure of visual scenes, and developing corresponding learning and inference algorithms. In this thesis, we describe several models which integrate graphical representations with nonparametric statistical methods. This approach leads to inference algorithms which tractably recover high-dimensional, continuous object pose variations, and learning procedures which transfer knowledge among related recognition tasks. Motivated by visual tracking problems, we first develop a nonparametric extension of the belief propagation (BP) algorithm. Using Monte Carlo methods, we provide general procedures for recursively updating particle-based approximations of continuous sufficient statistics. Efficient multiscale sampling methods then allow this nonparametric BP algorithm to be flexibly adapted to many different applications.(cont.) As a particular example, we consider a graphical model describing the hand's three-dimensional (3D) structure, kinematics, and dynamics. This graph encodes global hand pose via the 3D position and orientation of several rigid components, and thus exposes local structure in a high-dimensional articulated model. Applying nonparametric BP, we recover a hand tracking algorithm which is robust to outliers and local visual ambiguities. Via a set of latent occupancy masks, we also extend our approach to consistently infer occlusion events in a distributed fashion. In the second half of this thesis, we develop methods for learning hierarchical models of objects, the parts composing them, and the scenes surrounding them. Our approach couples topic models originally developed for text analysis with spatial transformations, and thus consistently accounts for geometric constraints. By building integrated scene models, we may discover contextual relationships, and better exploit partially labeled training images. We first consider images of isolated objects, and show that sharing parts among object categories improves accuracy when learning from few examples.(cont.) Turning to multiple object scenes, we propose nonparametric models which use Dirichlet processes to automatically learn the number of parts underlying each object category, and objects composing each scene. Adapting these transformed Dirichlet processes to images taken with a binocular stereo camera, we learn integrated, 3D models of object geometry and appearance.     Insights from Classifying Visual Concepts with Multiple Kernel Learning

    Combining information from various image features has become a standard technique in concept recognition tasks. However, the optimal way of fusing the resulting kernel functions is usually unknown in practical applications. Multiple kernel learning (MKL) techniques allow to determine an optimal linear combination of such similarity matrices. Classical approaches to MKL promote sparse mixtures. Unfortunately, so-called 1-norm MKL variants are often observed to be outperformed by an unweighted sum kernel. The contribution of this paper is twofold: We apply a recently developed non-sparse MKL variant to state-of-the-art concept recognition tasks within computer vision. We provide insights on benefits and limits of non-sparse MKL and compare it against its direct competitors, the sum kernel SVM and the sparse MKL. We report empirical results for the PASCAL VOC 2009 Classification and ImageCLEF2010 Photo Annotation challenge data sets.     Non-Verbal Communication Analysis in Victim-Offender Mediations

    In this paper we present a non-invasive ambient intelligence framework for the semi-automatic analysis of non-verbal communication applied to the restorative justice field. In particular, we propose the use of computer vision and social signal processing technologies in real scenarios of Victim-Offender Mediations, applying feature extraction techniques to multi-modal audio-RGB-depth data. We compute a set of behavioral indicators that define communicative cues from the fields of psychology and observational methodology. We test our methodology on data captured in real world Victim-Offender Mediation sessions in Catalonia in collaboration with the regional government. We define the ground truth based on expert opinions when annotating the observed social responses. Using different state-of-the-art binary classification approaches, our system achieves recognition accuracies of 86% when predicting satisfaction, and 79% when predicting both agreement and receptivity. Applying a regression strategy, we obtain a mean deviation for the predictions between 0.5 and 0.7 in the range [1-5] for the computed social signals.Comment: Please, find the supplementary video material at: http://sunai.uoc.edu/~vponcel/video/VOMSessionSample.mp

    DEEP NEURAL NETWORKS AND REGRESSION MODELS FOR OBJECT DETECTION AND POSE ESTIMATION

    Estimating the pose, orientation and the location of objects has been a central problem addressed by the computer vision community for decades. In this dissertation, we propose new approaches for these important problems using deep neural networks as well as tree-based regression models. For the first topic, we look at the human body pose estimation problem and propose a novel regression-based approach. The goal of human body pose estimation is to predict the locations of body joints, given an image of a person. Due to significant variations introduced by pose, clothing and body styles, it is extremely difficult to address this task by a standard application of the regression method. Thus, we address this task by dividing the whole body pose estimation problem into a set of local pose estimation problems by introducing a dependency graph which describes the dependency among different body joints. For each local pose estimation problem, we train a boosted regression tree model and estimate the pose by progressively applying the regression along the paths in a dependency graph starting from the root node. Our next work is on improving the traditional regression tree method and demonstrate its effectiveness for pose/orientation estimation tasks. The main issues of the traditional regression training are, 1) the node splitting is limited to binary splitting, 2) the form of the splitting function is limited to thresholding on a single dimension of the input vector and 3) the best splitting function is found by exhaustive search. We propose a novel node splitting algorithm for regression tree training which does not have the issues mentioned above. The algorithm proceeds by first applying k-means clustering in the output space, conducting multi-class classification by support vector machine (SVM) and determining the constant estimate at each leaf node. We apply the regression forest that includes our regression tree models to head pose estimation, car orientation estimation and pedestrian orientation estimation tasks and demonstrate its superiority over various standard regression methods. Next, we turn our attention to the role of pose information for the object detection task. In particular, we focus on the detection of fashion items a person is wearing or carrying. It is clear that the locations of these items are strongly correlated with the pose of the person. To address this task, we first generate a set of candidate bounding boxes by using an object proposal algorithm. For each candidate bounding box, image features are extracted by a deep convolutional neural network pre-trained on a large image dataset and the detection scores are generated by SVMs. We introduce a pose-dependent prior on the geometry of the bounding boxes and combine it with the SVM scores. We demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant improvement in the detection performance. Lastly, we address the object detection task by exploring a way to incorporate an attention mechanism into the detection algorithm. Humans have the capability of allocating multiple fixation points, each of which attends to different locations and scales of the scene. However, such a mechanism is missing in the current state-of-the-art object detection methods. Inspired by the human vision system, we propose a novel deep network architecture that imitates this attention mechanism. For detecting objects in an image, the network adaptively places a sequence of glimpses at different locations in the image. Evidences of the presence of an object and its location are extracted from these glimpses, which are then fused for estimating the object class and bounding box coordinates. Due to the lack of ground truth annotations for the visual attention mechanism, we train our network using a reinforcement learning algorithm. Experiment results on standard object detection benchmarks show that the proposed network consistently outperforms the baseline networks that do not employ the attention mechanism

    Human Motion Trajectory Prediction: A Survey

    With growing numbers of intelligent autonomous systems in human environments, the ability of such systems to perceive, understand and anticipate human behavior becomes increasingly important. Specifically, predicting future positions of dynamic agents and planning considering such predictions are key tasks for self-driving vehicles, service robots and advanced surveillance systems. This paper provides a survey of human motion trajectory prediction. We review, analyze and structure a large selection of work from different communities and propose a taxonomy that categorizes existing methods based on the motion modeling approach and level of contextual information used. We provide an overview of the existing datasets and performance metrics.     Exploring complex cellular membranes containing lipids, cholesterols, proteins, and gangliosides using molecular simulations

    Domains of different thermodynamic phases manifest in the cell membrane as a consequence of the complex interactions between lipids and proteins. One of the outstanding challenges in membrane biophysics is to understand the role played by the structural and dynamical heterogeneity of membranes in supporting cellular function. In particular, there remain fundamental open questions related to the role of proteins in lipid domain formation, the effect of protein co-localization with lipid domains, and the nanoscopic structure of lipid domains. My dissertation research systematically investigated cellular membrane environments using all-atom and coarse-grained molecular simulations. Systems of incremental complexity, binary and ternary lipid model membranes, laterally heterogeneous membranes with proteins, and membranes with gangliosides were studied. With the aid of statistical mechanics and molecular simulation algorithms, critical insights were gained into cholesterol aggregation in model membranes. Cholesterol was found to populate a dimer ensemble with distinct sub-states in contrast to the idealistic view of face-flush cholesterol dimers. Further investigations characterized the inter- and intra-leaflet interactions of cholesterols, providing insights into possible trimer and tetramer formation. To probe the dynamic interplay of lipids and proteins in lipid raft-mimicking environments, we accurately modeled laterally heterogeneous membranes and explored the colocalization of transmembrane proteins. The proteins were observed to preferably co-localize at the domain boundaries, reducing the excess free energy of forming an interface. This observation has implications in transmembrane proteins known to be involved in the biogenesis of amyloid beta protein and believed to have activity dependent on localization in raft domains. Venturing beyond ternary lipid mixtures, membranes formed from quaternary lipid mixtures that approximate the surface of an artificial virus nanoparticle were examined. The effects of cations in mediating the interactions of negatively charged lipids were established through collaborative of experimental and simulation studies. Finally, development of force field parameters for sulfated poly-amido-saccharides and also validating existing cholesterol parameters across all available force fields were also undertaken as major methodological pursuits. Taken together these studies demonstrate the power of computer simulation, well-validated by experiment, to elucidate the structural and functional nature of complex biomolecular systems
