    On Autonomic HPC Clouds

Proceedings of: Second International Workshop on Sustainable Ultrascale Computing Systems (NESUS 2015). Krakow (Poland), September 10-11, 2015.The long tail of science using HPC facilities is looking nowadays to instant available HPC Clouds as a viable alternative to the long waiting queues of supercomputing centers. While the name of HPC Cloud is suggesting a Cloud service, the current HPC-as-a-Service is mainly an offer of bar metal, better named cluster-on-demand. The elasticity and virtualization benefits of the Clouds are not exploited by HPC-as-a-Service. In this paper we discuss how the HPC Cloud offer can be improved from a particular point of view, of automation. After a reminder of the characteristics of the Autonomic Cloud, we project the requirements and expectations to what we name Autonomic HPC Clouds. Finally, we point towards the expected results of the latest research and development activities related to the topics that were identified. The work related to Autonomic HPC Clouds is supported by the European Commission under grant agreement H2020-6643946 (CloudLightning). The CLoudLightning project proposal was prepared by eight partner institutions, three of them as earlier partners in the COST Action IC1305 NESUS, benefiting from its inputs for the proposal. The section related to Autonomic Clouds is supported by the Romanian UEFISCDI under grant agreement PN-II-ID-PCE-2011- 3-0260 (AMICAS)

Practical nous as the aim of legal education?

    Get PDF
There has been an implicit assumption that legal education should be about exposition and evaluation, and should reward facility in exposition and theoretical awareness. This theoretically based assumption generates a theory-induced blindness. Specifically, it obscures the dynamic relationship between law and legal practice, despite it being a familiar aspect of the world. The lawyer as rule entrepreneur is lost sight of. One alternative assumption about legal education would be that law is a game like activity; and legal education should be directed towards promoting those qualities that would enhance performance in this game. In this approach to legal education it would be practical nous that would be sought and rewarded, and such qualities as facility in exposition and theoretical awareness would receive recognition merely as qualities that can be ancillary to and elements of practical nous. Doctrinal legal education naturally pulls towards the first theory, and clinical legal education naturally pulls towards the second. We argue for a clearer awareness of the role of rule entrepreneurship in clinical programmes and in legal education generally

A Critical Review of Educational Psychologist Engagement with the Black Community: A Diverse Group Within a Local United Kingdom Community Context

A diverse group within a community is described as a collective of individuals that are different from others within that same community (Pickup, 2021). Burnham (2012) highlights that these differences may pertain to factors such as gender, identity, class, sexual orientation or ethnicity. This perception of difference can lead to prejudice by the dominant group. The mere threat of deviation from societal norms can result in the marginalisation of diverse groups whereby they are overtly or covertly dispelled to live on the fringes of society (Pickup, 2021). Such groups often experience reduced functioning and disadvantage compared with the rest of the community (Brind et al., 2008). This paper provides a critical review of educational psychologists’ (EPs’) engagement with the Black community within the United Kingdom (UK); a diverse group within a predominantly White local community Educational Psychology Service (EPS) placement context. Relevant literature, insight into the experiences of the Black community and ways to promote group participation in professional practice are underscored. Critical analysis of factors that lead to underachievement, disaffection and exclusion among this group is also examined. A reflective writing style is incorporated throughout as I critically consider placement practice experiences of engagement with the Black community as a Black thirdyear Trainee Educational Psychologist (TEP) at the University of East London at the time of writing

Art therapy in mainstream primary schools in the United Kingdom and the United States of America : identifying connections with the Australian experience

    Get PDF
This thesis is a case study that explores art therapy programs that are being or have been established in mainstream primary education settings in the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia. The study includes a review of literature which relates an application of art therapy principles and practice to an education framework and the developmental and emotional needs of primary age children. The art therapy programs are examined in terms of the target population (eg. abused, rejected, disaffected, vulnerable children); the value of these programs to children in the primary school system (ie. in helping to remove students\u27 emotional blocks to learning); the logistics of their implementation in primary schools; and their source of funding. The level of interest, support and commitment from allied health and community workers as well as teachers and administrators working within a. school structure is also examined. The data analysis and conclusions reflect on the common and recurring themes which arise from the study of programs in the UK and USA. These are compared to the Australian experience. The implications of the study for the Education Department of Western Australian system is discussed

How does web 2.0 influence marketing

    Get PDF
Currently people have been developing ways to “block” attempts of contact by companies, in order to market their products and services. In the recent decades many techniques have been refined and used to exhaustion, such as call centers, direct sales, promotions and events, among others. All off these attempts to approach the client have resulted in the saturation of the traditional marketing techniques, even existing controversial laws such as “Do Not Call” for telemarketing, anti-spam, web and satellite radio and TiVO in the United States of America; it basically records and removes TV ads from the persons favorite programs. It is then necessary to find new ways of approaching the client, who is also becoming more selective and increasingly concerned with effective management of his time. The exponential development of information technologies has given rise to innovative channels of communication between businesses and customers, and a recent phenomenon that is the case of Web 2.0, which is revolutionizing the dynamic world of business and social relationships. The purpose of the thesis is to explain the concept of Web 2.0, and explain how it is an effective way to communicate with customers, especially in companies that do not have a large advertisement budget. In order to better understand the use of Web 2.0 and its tools, it will be elaborated a case study based on a small and emerging company that portraits this situation, and how it took advantage of Web 2.0 tools to better understand the consumers needs and how should it operate in its own market.

This report explores the role that technology has played in the development of the career support market. This market is conceived broadly to include all possible resources that individuals might draw upon to support them in their career development. A key element is the role that is played by public-sector career services and by careers professionals; though these resources are supplemented by services paid for in a wide range of ways and delivered by a range of professionals and non-professionals.UKCE
