    Experiences in teaching grid computing to advanced level students

    The development of teaching materials for future software engineers is critical to the long term success of the grid. At present however there is considerable turmoil in the grid community both within the standards and the technology base underpinning these standards. In this context, it is especially challenging to develop teaching materials that have some sort of lifetime beyond the next wave of grid middleware and standards. In addition, the current way in which grid security is supported and delivered has two key problems. Firstly in the case of the UK e-Science community, scalability issues arise from a central certificate authority. Secondly, the current security mechanisms used by the grid community are not line grained enough. In this paper we outline how these issues are being addressed through the development of a grid computing module supported by an advanced authorisation infrastructure at the University of Glasgow

    Single sign-on and authorization for dynamic virtual organizations

    The vision of the Grid is to support the dynamic establishment and subsequent management of virtual organizations (VO). To achieve this presents many challenges for the Grid community with perhaps the greatest one being security. Whilst Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) provide a form of single sign-on through recognition of trusted certification authorities, they have numerous limitations. The Internet2 Shibboleth architecture and protocols provide an enabling technology overcoming some of the issues with PKIs however Shibboleth too suffers from various limitations that make its application for dynamic VO establishment and management difficult. In this paper we explore the limitations of PKIs and Shibboleth and present an infrastructure that incorporates single sign-on with advanced authorization of federated security infrastructures and yet is seamless and targeted to the needs of end users. We explore this infrastructure through an educational case study at the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) at the University of Glasgow and Edinburgh

    Integration via Meaning: Using the Semantic Web to deliver Web Services

The former allows the construction of distributed systems across the WWW by providing a lightweight middleware architecture. The latter provides an infrastructure for accessing resources on the WWW via their relationships with respect to conceptual descriptions. In this paper, I shall review the progress undertaken in each of these two areas. Further, I shall argue that in order for the aims of both the Semantic Web and the Web Services activities to be successful, then the Web Service architecture needs to be augmented by concepts and tools of the Semantic Web. This infrastructure will allow resource discovery, brokering and access to be enabled in a standardised, integrated and interoperable manner. Finally, I survey the CLRC Information Technology R&D programme to show how it is contributing to the development of this future infrastructure

    Cloud computing is one of the trending technologies that provide boundless virtualized resources to the internet users as an important services through the internet, while providing the privacy and security. By using these cloud services, internet users get many parallel computing resources at low cost. It predicted that till 2016, revenues from the online business management spent $4 billion for data storage. Cloud is an open source platform structure, so it is having more chances to malicious attacks. Privacy, confidentiality, and security of stored data are primary security challenges in cloud computing. In cloud computing, ‘virtualization' is one of the techniques dividing memory into different blocks. In most of the existing systems there is only single authority in the system to provide the encrypted keys. To fill the few security issues, this paper proposed a novel authenticated trust security model for secure virtualization system to encrypt the files. The proposed security model achieves the following functions: 1) allotting the VSM(VM Security Monitor) model for each virtual machine; 2) providing secret keys to encrypt and decrypt information by symmetric encryption.The contribution is a proposed architecture that provides a workable security that a cloud service provider can offer to its consumers.     This paper discusses how quantitative data analysis in the social sciences can engage with and exploit an e-Infrastructure. We highlight how a number of activities which are central to quantitative data analysis, referred to as ‘data management’, can benefit from e-infrastructure support. We conclude by discussing how these issues are relevant to the DAMES (Data Management through e-Social Science) research Node, an ongoing project that aims to develop e-Infrastructural resources for quantitative data analysis in the social sciences
