    Pedestrian Validation in Infrared Images by Means of Active Contours and Neural Networks

    This paper presents two different modules for the validation of human shape presence in far-infrared images. These modules are part of a more complex system aimed at the detection of pedestrians by means of the simultaneous use of two stereo vision systems in both far-infrared and daylight domains. The first module detects the presence of a human shape in a list of areas of attention using active contours to detect the object shape and evaluating the results by means of a neural network. The second validation subsystem directly exploits a neural network for each area of attention in the far-infrared images and produces a list of votes

    A Comprehensive Survey of Deep Learning in Remote Sensing: Theories, Tools and Challenges for the Community

    In recent years, deep learning (DL), a re-branding of neural networks (NNs), has risen to the top in numerous areas, namely computer vision (CV), speech recognition, natural language processing, etc. Whereas remote sensing (RS) possesses a number of unique challenges, primarily related to sensors and applications, inevitably RS draws from many of the same theories as CV; e.g., statistics, fusion, and machine learning, to name a few. This means that the RS community should be aware of, if not at the leading edge of, of advancements like DL. Herein, we provide the most comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art RS DL research. We also review recent new developments in the DL field that can be used in DL for RS. Namely, we focus on theories, tools and challenges for the RS community. Specifically, we focus on unsolved challenges and opportunities as it relates to (i) inadequate data sets, (ii) human-understandable solutions for modelling physical phenomena, (iii) Big Data, (iv) non-traditional heterogeneous data sources, (v) DL architectures and learning algorithms for spectral, spatial and temporal data, (vi) transfer learning, (vii) an improved theoretical understanding of DL systems, (viii) high barriers to entry, and (ix) training and optimizing the DL.Comment: 64 pages, 411 references.     Using Prior Knowledge for Verification and Elimination of Stationary and Variable Objects in Real-time Images

    With the evolving technologies in the autonomous vehicle industry, now it has become possible for automobile passengers to sit relaxed instead of driving the car. Technologies like object detection, object identification, and image segmentation have enabled an autonomous car to identify and detect an object on the road in order to drive safely. While an autonomous car drives by itself on the road, the types of objects surrounding the car can be dynamic (e.g., cars and pedestrians), stationary (e.g., buildings and benches), and variable (e.g., trees) depending on if the location or shape of an object changes or not. Different from the existing image-based approaches to detect and recognize objects in the scene, in this research 3D virtual world is employed to verify and eliminate stationary and variable objects to allow the autonomous car to focus on dynamic objects that may cause danger to its driving. This methodology takes advantage of prior knowledge of stationary and variable objects presented in a virtual city and verifies their existence in a real-time scene by matching keypoints between the virtual and real objects. In case of a stationary or variable object that does not exist in the virtual world due to incomplete pre-existing information, this method uses machine learning for object detection. Verified objects are then removed from the real-time image with a combined algorithm using contour detection and class activation map (CAM), which helps to enhance the efficiency and accuracy when recognizing moving objects

    SEMANTIC IMAGE SEGMENTATION VIA A DENSE PARALLEL NETWORK

    Image segmentation has been an important area of study in computer vision. Image segmentation is a challenging task, since it involves pixel-wise annotation, i.e. labeling each pixel according to the class to which it belongs. In image classification task, the goal is to predict to which class an entire image belongs. Thus, there is more focus on the abstract features extracted by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), with less emphasis on the spatial information. In image segmentation task, on the other hand, the abstract information and spatial information are needed at the same time. One class of work in image segmentation focuses on ``recovering” the high-resolution features from the low resolution ones. This type of network has an encoder-decoder structure, and spatial information is recovered by feeding the decoder part of the model with previous high-resolution features through skip connections. Overall, these strategies involving skip connections try to propagate features to deeper layers. The second class of work, on the other hand, focuses on ``maintaining high resolution features throughout the process. In this thesis, we first review the related work on image segmentation and then introduce two new models, namely Unet-Laplacian and Dense Parallel Network (DensePN). The Unet-Laplacian is a series CNN model, incorporating a Laplacian filter branch. This new branch performs Laplacian filter operation on the input RGB image, and feeds the output to the decoder. Experiments results show that, the output of the Unet-Laplacian captures more of the ground truth mask, and eliminates some of the false positives. We then describe the proposed DensePN, which was designed to find a good balance between extracting features through multiple layers and keeping spatial information. DensePN allows not only keeping high-resolution feature maps but also feature reuse at deeper layers to solve the image segmentation problem. We have designed the Dense Parallel Network based on three main observations that we have gained from our initial trials and preliminary studies. First, maintaining a high resolution feature map provides good performance. Second, feature reuse is very efficient, and allows having deeper networks. Third, having a parallel structure can provide better information flow. Experimental results on the CamVid dataset show that the proposed DensePN (with 1.1M parameters) provides a better performance than FCDense56 (with 1.5M parameters) by having less parameters at the same time

    Calibration-free Pedestrian Partial Pose Estimation Using a High-mounted Kinect

    Les applications de l’analyse du comportement humain ont subit de rapides développements durant les dernières décades, tant au niveau des systèmes de divertissements que pour des applications professionnelles comme les interfaces humain-machine, les systèmes d’assistance de conduite automobile ou des systèmes de protection des piétons. Cette thèse traite du problème de reconnaissance de piétons ainsi qu’à l’estimation de leur orientation en 3D. Cette estimation est faite dans l’optique que la connaissance de cette orientation est bénéfique tant au niveau de l’analyse que de la prédiction du comportement des piétons. De ce fait, cette thèse propose à la fois une nouvelle méthode pour détecter les piétons et une manière d’estimer leur orientation, par l’intégration séquentielle d’un module de détection et un module d’estimation d’orientation. Pour effectuer cette détection de piéton, nous avons conçu un classificateur en cascade qui génère automatiquement une boîte autour des piétons détectés dans l’image. Suivant cela, des régions sont extraites d’un nuage de points 3D afin de classifier l’orientation du torse du piéton. Cette classification se base sur une image synthétique grossière par tramage (rasterization) qui simule une caméra virtuelle placée immédiatement au-dessus du piéton détecté. Une machine à vecteurs de support effectue la classification à partir de cette image de synthèse, pour l’une des 10 orientations discrètes utilisées lors de l’entrainement (incréments de 30 degrés). Afin de valider les performances de notre approche d’estimation d’orientation, nous avons construit une base de données de référence contenant 764 nuages de points. Ces données furent capturées à l’aide d’une caméra Kinect de Microsoft pour 30 volontaires différents, et la vérité-terrain sur l’orientation fut établie par l’entremise d’un système de capture de mouvement Vicon. Finalement, nous avons démontré les améliorations apportées par notre approche. En particulier, nous pouvons détecter des piétons avec une précision de 95.29% et estimer l’orientation du corps (dans un intervalle de 30 degrés) avec une précision de 88.88%. Nous espérons ainsi que nos résultats de recherche puissent servir de point de départ à d’autres recherches futures.The application of human behavior analysis has undergone rapid development during the last decades from entertainment system to professional one, as Human Robot Interaction (HRI), Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Pedestrian Protection System (PPS), etc. Meanwhile, this thesis addresses the problem of recognizing pedestrians and estimating their body orientation in 3D based on the fact that estimating a person’s orientation is beneficial in determining their behavior. In this thesis, a new method is proposed for detecting and estimating the orientation, in which the result of a pedestrian detection module and a orientation estimation module are integrated sequentially. For the goal of pedestrian detection, a cascade classifier is designed to draw a bounding box around the detected pedestrian. Following this, extracted regions are given to a discrete orientation classifier to estimate pedestrian body’s orientation. This classification is based on a coarse, rasterized depth image simulating a top-view virtual camera, and uses a support vector machine classifier that was trained to distinguish 10 orientations (30 degrees increments). In order to test the performance of our approach, a new benchmark database contains 764 sets of point cloud for body-orientation classification was captured. For this benchmark, a Kinect recorded the point cloud of 30 participants and a marker-based motion capture system (Vicon) provided the ground truth on their orientation. Finally we demonstrated the improvements brought by our system, as it detected pedestrian with an accuracy of 95:29% and estimated the body orientation with an accuracy of 88:88%.We hope it can provide a new foundation for future researches

    Target classification in multimodal video

    The presented thesis focuses on enhancing scene segmentation and target recognition methodologies via the mobilisation of contextual information. The algorithms developed to achieve this goal utilise multi-modal sensor information collected across varying scenarios, from controlled indoor sequences to challenging rural locations. Sensors are chiefly colour band and long wave infrared (LWIR), enabling persistent surveillance capabilities across all environments. In the drive to develop effectual algorithms towards the outlined goals, key obstacles are identified and examined: the recovery of background scene structure from foreground object ’clutter’, employing contextual foreground knowledge to circumvent training a classifier when labeled data is not readily available, creating a labeled LWIR dataset to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) based object classifier and the viability of spatial context to address long range target classification when big data solutions are not enough. For an environment displaying frequent foreground clutter, such as a busy train station, we propose an algorithm exploiting foreground object presence to segment underlying scene structure that is not often visible. If such a location is outdoors and surveyed by an infra-red (IR) and visible band camera set-up, scene context and contextual knowledge transfer allows reasonable class predictions for thermal signatures within the scene to be determined. Furthermore, a labeled LWIR image corpus is created to train an infrared object classifier, using a CNN approach. The trained network demonstrates effective classification accuracy of 95% over 6 object classes. However, performance is not sustainable for IR targets acquired at long range due to low signal quality and classification accuracy drops. This is addressed by mobilising spatial context to affect network class scores, restoring robust classification capability

    Real-time vehicle detection using low-cost sensors

    Improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents is one of the top priorities for the automotive industry. As human driving behaviour is one of the top causation factors of road accidents, research is working towards removing control from the human driver by automating functions and finally introducing a fully Autonomous Vehicle (AV). A Collision Avoidance System (CAS) is one of the key safety systems for an AV, as it ensures all potential threats ahead of the vehicle are identified and appropriate action is taken. This research focuses on the task of vehicle detection, which is the base of a CAS, and attempts to produce an effective vehicle detector based on the data coming from a low-cost monocular camera. Developing a robust CAS based on low-cost sensor is crucial to bringing the cost of safety systems down and in this way, increase their adoption rate by end users. In this work, detectors are developed based on the two main approaches to vehicle detection using a monocular camera. The first is the traditional image processing approach where visual cues are utilised to generate potential vehicle locations and at a second stage, verify the existence of vehicles in an image. The second approach is based on a Convolutional Neural Network, a computationally expensive method that unifies the detection process in a single pipeline. The goal is to determine which method is more appropriate for real-time applications. Following the first approach, a vehicle detector based on the combination of HOG features and SVM classification is developed. The detector attempts to optimise performance by modifying the detection pipeline and improve run-time performance. For the CNN-based approach, six different network models are developed and trained end to end using collected data, each with a different network structure and parameters, in an attempt to determine which combination produces the best results. The evaluation of the different vehicle detectors produced some interesting findings; the first approach did not manage to produce a working detector, while the CNN-based approach produced a high performing vehicle detector with an 85.87% average precision and a very low miss rate. The detector managed to perform well under different operational environments (motorway, urban and rural roads) and the results were validated using an external dataset. Additional testing of the vehicle detector indicated it is suitable as a base for safety applications such as CAS, with a run time performance of 12FPS and potential for further improvements.</div

    All-weather object recognition using radar and infrared sensing

    Autonomous cars are an emergent technology which has the capacity to change human lives. The current sensor systems which are most capable of perception are based on optical sensors. For example, deep neural networks show outstanding results in recognising objects when used to process data from cameras and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensors. However these sensors perform poorly under adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, and snow due to the sensor wavelengths. This thesis explores new sensing developments based on long wave polarised infrared (IR) imagery and imaging radar to recognise objects. First, we developed a methodology based on Stokes parameters using polarised infrared data to recognise vehicles using deep neural networks. Second, we explored the potential of using only the power spectrum captured by low-THz radar sensors to perform object recognition in a controlled scenario. This latter work is based on a data-driven approach together with the development of a data augmentation method based on attenuation, range and speckle noise. Last, we created a new large-scale dataset in the ”wild” with many different weather scenarios (sunny, overcast, night, fog, rain and snow) showing radar robustness to detect vehicles in adverse weather. High resolution radar and polarised IR imagery, combined with a deep learning approach, are shown as a potential alternative to current automotive sensing systems based on visible spectrum optical technology as they are more robust in severe weather and adverse light conditions.UK Engineering and Physical Research Council, grant reference EP/N012402/
