Improving Hypernymy Extraction with Distributional Semantic Classes
In this paper, we show how distributionally-induced semantic classes can be
helpful for extracting hypernyms. We present methods for inducing sense-aware
semantic classes using distributional semantics and using these induced
semantic classes for filtering noisy hypernymy relations. Denoising of
hypernyms is performed by labeling each semantic class with its hypernyms. On
the one hand, this allows us to filter out wrong extractions using the global
structure of distributionally similar senses. On the other hand, we infer
missing hypernyms via label propagation to cluster terms. We conduct a
large-scale crowdsourcing study showing that processing of automatically
extracted hypernyms using our approach improves the quality of the hypernymy
extraction in terms of both precision and recall. Furthermore, we show the
utility of our method in the domain taxonomy induction task, achieving the
state-of-the-art results on a SemEval'16 task on taxonomy induction.Comment: In Proceedings of the 11th Conference on Language Resources and

Inferring Concept Hierarchies from Text Corpora via Hyperbolic Embeddings
We consider the task of inferring is-a relationships from large text corpora.
For this purpose, we propose a new method combining hyperbolic embeddings and
Hearst patterns. This approach allows us to set appropriate constraints for
inferring concept hierarchies from distributional contexts while also being
able to predict missing is-a relationships and to correct wrong extractions.
Moreover -- and in contrast with other methods -- the hierarchical nature of
hyperbolic space allows us to learn highly efficient representations and to
improve the taxonomic consistency of the inferred hierarchies. Experimentally,
we show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on several
commonly-used benchmarks
Taxonomy Induction using Hypernym Subsequences
We propose a novel, semi-supervised approach towards domain taxonomy
induction from an input vocabulary of seed terms. Unlike all previous
approaches, which typically extract direct hypernym edges for terms, our
approach utilizes a novel probabilistic framework to extract hypernym
subsequences. Taxonomy induction from extracted subsequences is cast as an
instance of the minimumcost flow problem on a carefully designed directed
graph. Through experiments, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms
stateof- the-art taxonomy induction approaches across four languages.
Importantly, we also show that our approach is robust to the presence of noise
in the input vocabulary. To the best of our knowledge, no previous approaches
have been empirically proven to manifest noise-robustness in the input
vocabulary
A pattern mining approach for information filtering systems
It is a big challenge to clearly identify the boundary between positive and negative streams for information filtering systems. Several attempts have used negative feedback to solve this challenge; however, there are two issues for using negative relevance feedback to improve the effectiveness of information filtering. The first one is how to select constructive negative samples in order to reduce the space of negative documents. The second issue is how to decide noisy extracted features that should be updated based on the selected negative samples. This paper proposes a pattern mining based approach to select some offenders from the negative documents, where an offender can be used to reduce the side effects of noisy features. It also classifies extracted features (i.e., terms) into three categories: positive specific terms, general terms, and negative specific terms. In this way, multiple revising strategies can be used to update extracted features. An iterative learning algorithm is also proposed to implement this approach on the RCV1 data collection, and substantial experiments show that the proposed approach achieves encouraging performance and the performance is also consistent for adaptive filtering as well
Effective pattern discovery for text mining
Many data mining techniques have been proposed for mining useful patterns in text documents. However, how to effectively use and update discovered patterns is still an open research issue, especially in the domain of text mining. Since most existing text mining methods adopted term-based approaches, they all suffer from the problems of polysemy and synonymy. Over the years, people have often held the hypothesis that pattern (or phrase) based approaches should perform better than the term-based ones, but many experiments did not support this hypothesis. This paper presents an innovative technique, effective pattern discovery which includes the processes of pattern deploying and pattern evolving, to improve the effectiveness of using and updating discovered patterns for finding relevant and interesting information. Substantial experiments on RCV1 data collection and TREC topics demonstrate that the proposed solution achieves encouraging performance
A User-Centered Concept Mining System for Query and Document Understanding at Tencent
Concepts embody the knowledge of the world and facilitate the cognitive
processes of human beings. Mining concepts from web documents and constructing
the corresponding taxonomy are core research problems in text understanding and
support many downstream tasks such as query analysis, knowledge base
construction, recommendation, and search. However, we argue that most prior
studies extract formal and overly general concepts from Wikipedia or static web
pages, which are not representing the user perspective. In this paper, we
describe our experience of implementing and deploying ConcepT in Tencent QQ
Browser. It discovers user-centered concepts at the right granularity
conforming to user interests, by mining a large amount of user queries and
interactive search click logs. The extracted concepts have the proper
granularity, are consistent with user language styles and are dynamically
updated. We further present our techniques to tag documents with user-centered
concepts and to construct a topic-concept-instance taxonomy, which has helped
to improve search as well as news feeds recommendation in Tencent QQ Browser.
We performed extensive offline evaluation to demonstrate that our approach
could extract concepts of higher quality compared to several other existing
methods. Our system has been deployed in Tencent QQ Browser. Results from
online A/B testing involving a large number of real users suggest that the
Impression Efficiency of feeds users increased by 6.01% after incorporating the
user-centered concepts into the recommendation framework of Tencent QQ Browser.Comment: Accepted by KDD 201
